(6-8, 4th–PCL American South)
Game Notes:
For the second time this week, the Express had another game suspended. After the start of the game was delayed until 7:30 due to rain, they played mebbe half an hour before a power outage and more rain resulted in the game being put on hold. At the time, RR led 2-1 with one out in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
Other News and Notes:
(1) The game will be completed the next time the Zephyrs visit the Dell Diamond in June.
(8-6, T1st–Texas League South)
Game Notes:
CC had the late rally (2 runs in the 7th, 1 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th) to pick up the 5-2 win over Midland.
A large contingent of Chance Douglass fans came down from Amarillo to see the righty in his start against Midland. Maybe he was feeling a little extra pressure or is still getting a feel for AA, but he yielded 6 hits and 4 walks in 4.1 IP and threw 91 pitches in the process. To his credit, though, he did limit the damage to just 2 runs (1 of which was unearned due to C Kevin Davidson’s throwing error).
The bullpen was absolutely lights out. Jon Skaggs (2.1 IP), Aaron Williams (1.1 IP) and Jailen Peguero (1 IP) limited the RockHounds to just one hit and no walks while whiffin’ 6. Williams got the win while Peguero notches save #3.
DH Hunter Pence doubled and tripled.
CF Josh Anderson was 3-5 with a 2-bagger and a run scored.
1B J.R. House made it a 14-gamer with a single and also worked a free pass.
SS Ben Zobrist walked and doubled in a run (should have gotten credit for 2 RBIs but the scorer said otherwise) .
RF John Fagan doubled and was plunked twice.
Davidson made up for his error by going 2-3 at the plate with a walk and an RBI.
Other News and Notes:
(1) RHP Josh Muecke has gone to Houston to have his left wrist checked out. He hasn’t pitched since being hit there on a comebacker in the 1st game of the year. (2) After giving up 32 runs and losing each of the 1st 2 games at Midland, the pitching staff bore down and allowed the RockHounds just 8 runs over the last 3 games and won all 3 to take the series. Funny how pitching and wins generally go together. (3) House did strike out 3 times in the game, somewhat unusual in that he had a total of just 5 strikeouts in his previous 13 games this season. (4) Anderson and Pence extended their hitting streaks as well: both have 6-gamers.
Quoting:
“That’s the Skaggs we saw coming out of spring training and that’s what we expected from him,” manager Dave Clark said. “He went out and did a hell of a job for us.”
(6-7, T3rd-Carolina League Southern)
Day off.
(10-4, 1st–SAL Northern)
Down 4-0 early, the Legends came back with a pair of deuces in the 6th and 7th to tie it up. But the bully immediately dribbled the game away as Lake County scored a pair of their own in the bottom of the 7th and held on for the 6-4 win.
Leadoff hitter Wlad Sutil, starting for the 4th game in a row at SS in lieu of Tommy Manzella, went 2-5. He got his 3rd swipe of the year and scored a run.
2B Eric King made a habit of reaching base with 2 walks and 2 singles. He bumped his BA up to .415 in the process.
C J.R. Towles singled, doubled and knocked in a run. And he tied Josh Flores for the club lead with his 4th SB.
SS…(laughs)…CF Mitch Einertson had a single, sac fly and was a plunkee. He also threw out a runner at 3B.
LF Ryan Reed’s defensive struggles continue with another error (#3). His day at the plate was even worse, going 0-4 with 2 whiffs and a GIDP (the latter one of 3 in the ballgame for Lex).
Starter Sean Walker had lotsa traffic (13 baserunners) resulting in 4 runs over his 6 IP. He did limit the damage some by enticing 3 GIDPs.
Reliever Jamie Gant came on in the 7th and immediately gave up what turned out to be winning runs.
Other News and Notes:
(1) Lexington is a rather impressive 21-4 in swipes this season.
