(1-4, 4th–PCL American Southern)
Game Notes:
Ignoring the fact that his butt is now back in the minor leagues, things could only get better for R.A. Dickey. He rebounded from the 6-homer fiasco while with the Rangers with a decent enough performance (5.1 IP 7 H 2 R 2 ER 1 W 3 K) as the Oklahoma Redhawks win 5-3 over the Express.
RR had 9 hits in the game but the fly in the ointment was that only 2 were of the extra-base flavor. And those were doubles (by 1B Royce Huffman and C Hector Gimenez).
RF Charlton Jimerson, 3B Cody Ransom and Gimenez all had 2 hits in the game.
It was not a very triumphant return to the PCL for RR starting pitcher Phil Barzilla (4.1 IP 9 H 4 R 4 ER 1 W 4 K).
Other News and Notes:
(1) That was the 4th straight loss for RR after an opening win in NO. (2) A broken record here, but RR hitters again reached double figures in K’s and run their total up to 59 in 5 games. (3) INF Jesse Garcia has been signed and added to the roster. The 32 year-old has played 127 games in the majors, most recently 16 games with the Padres last season. He was quickly inserted into the lineup, playing SS Monday night and taking the 0fer.
(1-3, 4th–Texas League South)
Game Notes:
Day off.
(3-1, T1st–Carolina League Southern)
Game Notes:
The Avalanche had opportunity after opportunity handed to ’em–as witnessed by the 6 errors committed by the Frederick Keys (3 of those by their SS) and 6 free passes handed out by their pitchers. But Salem hitters only took sporadic advantage (leaving 11 men on base) and the Avs suffer their first loss.
1B Neil Sellers and C Lou Santangelo were both 2-5, with the former driving in 3 runs and the latter having a solo RBI.
2B Drew Sutton was the recipient of 4 of the walks handed out by Keys’ pitchers.
LF Frankie Caraballo walked and had an RBI double.
When you pitch from behind, even with 95+ gas you can still get in trouble. Such was the evening of starter Felipe Paulino, who gave up 3 gopher balls and 6 runs in his 4.1 innings of work as he got his feet wet in high A-ball for the first time.
The Avs had their own defensive woes, chalking up 5 miscues in the contest (spread among 5 different players).
Other News and Notes:
(1) Longhorn-ex RHP Beau Hale is on the Keys roster. He was a #1 pick of the Orioles back in 2000 but his career was short-circuited in 2003 when he had shoulder surgery, causing him to miss both the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
(5-0, 1st–SAL Northern)
Game Notes:
Lex continues its winning ways as they edge Hickory by a 4-3 score. The winning run scored in the bottom of the 7th after the Legends loaded the bases on 2 singles (by 2B Eric King and RF Eli Iorg) and a plunk. CF Mitch Einertson then grounded into a DP which scored King from third.
Brian Bogusevic debuted and, though obviously on a strict pitch count, gave up just one unearned run on 3 hits over 3 IP.
Sammy Gervacio entered the game later on and notched the win with 3.1 nifty scoreless innings, whiffing 5.
Brandon Stricklen had the perfect 9th to get the save.
King had a total of 3 hits in the game (including a 2-bagger) though it was Einertson with the big blow: a 2-run shot in the 3rd inning.
OU-ex 1B Ole Sheldon reached 3 times on a walk, single and a HBP.
C J.R. Towles made 2 appearances on the basepaths with a single and a plunk.
3B Koby Clemens took the 0fer but did plate a run on a groundout.
Otherwise solid defender SS Tommy Manzella had a couple of throwing errors in the game. And we won’t mention the fact he struck out 3 times (though he did have a single). Nor anything about that one occasion he was on base but was then ruled out for leaving 3B too soon on a deep fly to center on which he would have otherwise scored.
Other News and Notes:
(1) C David Kady is on the inactive list, which puts Lexington at the Sally roster limit of 25. (2) Mark Maloney of the Herald-Leader reports that Ryan McKeller has been suspended by the organization. He was arrested on Sunday on a DWI. (3) Scott Sarver was just promoted from extended spring training and pitched (ineffectively) in the game Monday night. He takes McKeller’s spot on the roster. (4) OF Josh Flores, who’s had a tough start to the season, was not in the lineup.
Quoting:
Einertson on his improved start this season versus last year’s 3-32 beginning:
“Just a different mind-set,” he said. “I’m more relaxed and realizing that if you have bad at-bats, it’s not gonna (ruin) the whole game or the whole season. So I try to follow a bad at-bat with a good at-bat.”
“He’s swinging the bat well,” (manager Jack) Lind said. “I’m impressed by him. When the ball comes off his bat, it has a special sound, and he’s really focused.”
