Thus far, the best take that I have read on the Pettitte defection.  The Chronicle can't carry her bra strap.

This is about the 20th time I have heard that Lane may be platooned in RF with Luke Scott. I cannot think of a dumber idea than having a guy with a .247 lifetime average against lefties be a platoon player who mostly faces lefties. If somebody can think of something that makes less sense than that, I want to know about it. Lane hit .198 against lefties last season!

Just listen to Footer on MLBradio.  She said the stuff that was in her mail bag, but also addressed one point about the White Sox trade that caught my attention.  Perhaps it was her over-sight, but she mentioned only Buchholz and Hirsh when talking about the Garland deal.

I thought that odd, because I thought Taveras was a part of it, and filled the White Sox need for a CFer.

She did mention that Jennings is not as high in the Clubs eyes as Garland.  And that trading Buchholz and Hirsh would be overpaying for Jennings and not for Garland.

I keep hoping that Hirsh will be kept, just because I "want" to see another prospect follow Oswalt's path to success for the club.  They need some "cheap" and effective young starters to balance out all the high dollar players they have now.  Trading Hirsh for a #2 seems like that would throw that chance away unless Albers/Patton jump more than I expect them to in 07.

But Hirsh does seem in play for acquiring that #2.

She also made a comment that closely behind getting a #2 is finding a solid #5 place hitter, because as she said "You can pitch around 2 guys, but you can't get around 3".

But I think that will also cost you a bit, and she did kind of indicate that the line-up you see now is probably the one you will see OD.

do not say Oswalt and Hirsh in the same sentence. Hirsh is nowhere near that good.

Which brings up a great opportunity for a question:

Of the top pitching prospects, who has the best "stuff"?

I'm thinking the list consists of the following:
Hirsh
Albers
Buchholtz
Patton - on reports alone
and
Nieve

Having never seen Patton, quite a bit of Hirsh, Buchholtz and Nieve, and a few glimpses of Albers, my answer is:

Albers has the best stuff, maybe not the best command.
Hirsh has decent to good stuff and pretty good command
Buchholtz has better stuff than Hirsh, maybe not as good as Albers, but poor command and maybe lacks the tenacity to succeed long term (I'm no expert so feel free to rip this to shreads)
Nieve may have stuff equal to Albers but looks to be a reliever, long term.  I hope that's wrong because he'd be a nice pitcher in the rotation.

Patton?  No idea... love to read some feedback on his pitches (and yes, I know that belongs in the minor league forumn).

Don't know where he necessarily fits in off the top of my heade, but I really like Nieve.  I think he's going to be a very good pitcher in this league.

The .198 came attached to a .344 OBP and .427 SLG. Lane's OPS against lefties last season was .771, compared to Scott's .777.

However it's worth noting that Scott splits dramatically better facing right handed pitching. The breakdown was 1.131/.777.

I hope Scott continues his 2006 form, but it's reasonable to expect at least a slight drop off from his MVP-esque numbers from last season. The Astros might also be hoping that Lane rebounds from his poor season in 2006. If Lane improves slightly from his dismal 2006 season, and if Scott drops off slightly, the platoon makes sense.

Lefty pitchers also traditionally perform better against lefty hitting.

I'm in favor of a Scott/Lane platoon, or a Scott/Burke platoon in RF.

(And a Huff/Ensberg platoon at 3B, but that will never happen.)

if you're just talking about fastballs, Nieve is by far the best.

Buchholz has by far the best curve.

Hirsh has the best control/command.

dunno re slider or changeup.

there are imo based on what i have seen in person.

from a little bit i have heard, Patton is nowhere near ready for AAA but is being rushed.

Sorry, I agree.  I just mean that the last prospect to come through the system that actual was useful in the ML rotation was Oswalt.  So I was hoping Hirsh could be productive for the Astros.  I don't view Hirsh as more than a #2 at this point, at best.

At the current going rate for even 3/4 type pitcher, you need to develop some "in house" to be successful these days.  And it just seems like the Astros are talking about trading away several of thier better candidates for "cheap" arms in the rotation.

Thanks, to both of you.  Surprised Albers fastball didn't factor in there.  I thought he was impressive during his starts.  Inconsistant but impressive stuff.

From some comments I heard this past month, I think the team is prefering to have Albers in the minors in 07 and not really wanting to have to put him in the 07 rotation unless they have no other choice.

Patton is being pushed, but keep in mind he is still very young, so being at AA this year would be considered pushing him, IMO.

So if Buchholz and Hirsh is moved to get a #2, and Albers is going to be at AA or AAA next year, you are reducing who is going to fill the 4/5 slots alot, IMO.

Adding: The Astros are not high on Nieve's off-speed stuff, hence the move to the bullpen.  His fastball is what has the Astros looking at end of the game relief for him.  Patton has a good fastball and is still developing his off-speed stuff.  He should start the year at AA again unless he lights up ST then you never know.

I'm in favor of a Scott/Lane platoon, or a Scott/Burke platoon in RF.

Why?  Has Pup actually come out and said he doesn't think Scott can handle left-handed pitching?  I see where he struggled a little against lefties last year, but he absolutely wore them out in the minors in '06.  I looked but couldn't get split stats for '05, etc.  Maybe last year was an aberration, who know.  That said, I'd really like to know how he did in years past.  I will try to check after I put my little girl down to sleep.

Well, I tried...but couldn't find dick in the way of splits prior to '06.  I know quite a few of you have seen him play in the minors.  What's everyone's recollection on how lefties handled Scott?  Anyone think Scott's a lost cause against'm?

Of course, no one is just handed such a distinguished designation.  She'll have to go through a rigorous vetting process, some of which will concern her knowledge of MLB.  She'll also need to disclose stuff like her favorite author, favorite brand of beer, favorite band, her bra and cup size, etc.  Things of that nature.

Andy.  I'm not sure about your choice of movie.  It could be the Shining.  Or it could be Zapped.  Or it could be any movie with Shannon Tweed or Sylvia Krystel.
Boom!

What about the Big Lebowski?  I think the movie changes with the time... Kind of like the weather...

Damn, that was a great reply.

I nominate Alyson Footer as the Official Journalist of OWA--OJOWA.

Duly noted.

We already have:

The Official Beer of OWA - Shiner Bock
The Official Band of OWA - The Clash
The Official Play of OWA - Henry V

We haven't named the Official Author of OWA yet, but I'm pretty sure the finalists are Hunter S. Thompson, William Faulkner, and D.H. Lawrence.

Lawrence, Faulkner, and Thompson -- I could go with any of those.  I'll just throw out Joseph Conrad, too.  I've been thinking of a complicated parallel between the recent Astros and Heart of Darkness, with Clemens as Col. Kurtz, of course; but it has a ways to go yet.  Conrad already penned Rocket's credo for him, though. We live as we dream -- alone.

No mention of an official OWA poet yet.  I like T.S. Eliot a lot, but I'm not sure he fits.  He can definitely kick Carl Sandburg's ass, though.  Then again, if you count the sonnets, Willy S. pretty much laps the field.

I guess The Simpsons is the official cartoon.  Maybe South Park in second.  I like those, but still, I'm old school.  For career smart-ass percentage and a bit more subtle subversiveness, I'll go with Bugs Bunny, every fucking time.

BTW, I assume we have signed all these people, rabbits, etc., up to exclusive endorsement contracts already?

As much as I'd love to go with a Shannon Tweed cinematic masterpiece, I'd have to go with Baio's magnum opus.

Hey boy, you cover about as much as a flapper's skirt in a high wind.

Look sister, is any of this filtering through that little blue bonnet of yours?

I-I-I know what you're gonna say son. When two halves is gone there's nuthin' left - and you're right. It's a little ol' worm who wasn't there. Two nuthins is nuthin'. That's mathematics son. You can argue with me but you can't argue with figures. Two half nuthins is a whole nuthin'.

Lookit here son, I say son, did ya see that hawk after those hens? He scared 'em! That Rhode Island Red turned white. Then blue. Rhode Island. Red, white, and blue. That's a joke, son. A flag waver. You're built too low. The fast ones go over your head. Ya got a hole in your glove. I keep pitchin' 'em and you keep missin' 'em. Ya gotta keep your eye on the ball. Eye. Ball. I almost had a gag, son. Joke, that is.
You see pal, that's who I am, and you're nothing. Nice guy, I don't give a shit. Good father, fuck you. Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here, close. You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? You can't take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit?

My vote: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (or Bottle Rocket)
