Astros interested in Peavy
« on: December 05, 2006, 10:28:43 am »
I think someone mentioned this a while back.  The article mentions that when they heard Peavy was mentioned in a deal for Ramirez, Houston checked in to see what San Diego would want.

 Chron Article

Sort of a "Well duh!" moment but Peavy would be a nice addition.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall during those trade discussions...can you imagine what the Padres must of thrown out as a preliminary offer?

Seriously...I figured it'd be something like:

Ensberg or Burke, plus Hirsh, Patton & Pence

I would counter with Ensberg, Taveras and Buchholz.

This was the part that I found interesting...

Although Axelrod has received one inquiry from a club interested in signing Bagwell,

Lots of interesting things in this passage:

Peavy earned $2.5 million in 2006, his fourth season. He'll earn under $5 million in 2007 and under $7 million in 2008, but the exact figure is dependent on the escalating clauses he meets. In addition, the Padres hold an option on Peavy's contract for 2009.

Amazing to me that Peavy has only played four seasons, and that he's under club control for three more years at a very reasonable price.  Makes you wonder why The Padres want to trade him.

When you are looking for ways to improve your club and you miss out on all the FAs you have two options: Trade or do nothing.  If your best trade chip (that which will yeild the most in return) is something like Peavy, you have to investigate it, even if you never actual pull off the deal.  right?

That's just it...I doubt they do want to trade him.  This stinks of the same shit that happened with Roy and the Orioles last year.  The Stros never offered him up...the Orioles asked for him, the Stros declined, next thing you know it's being reported that the Astros are offering up Roy to anyone who'll talk turkey.  Same shit here.  Redsox asked for him in the ManRam deal...and so on and so forth.  I doubt Peavy goes anywhere.

I saw that too. In the piece FSN ran on him; Bags sure sounded retired. I'm guessing tampa or someone wanted a to have an HOF  player around, in case he was interested.

For what it's worth, I share you opinion.  I thought it was interesting in that it was further proof that Purpura follows up on every possibility, even the absurd ones.  The man's looking to deal.
