Rocco Baldelli

Devil Rays are offering Rocco Baldelli for "premium young pitching"

The Link

Baldelli is very affordable.  Here is his contract information courtesy of "Cot's Baseball Contracts."

07:$0.75M, 08:$2.25M, 09:$6M club option ($4M buyout), 10:$8M club option, 11:$9M club option ($2M buyout - 2010 & 2011 options must be exercised together)
$4M escalator if Baldelli has 600 Plate Appearances in 2006
$1.75M in 2007, increasing 07 salary to $2.5M
$2.25M in 2008, increasing 08 salary to $4M
performance bonuses for 2007 & 2008 if Baldelli fails to reach 600 PAs in 2006.

Let's assume that Hirsh is untouchable.  If you were the Astros, would you trade up tp two of Nieve, Buchholtz, Albers, Patton for Baldelli?

I just saw the same thing from Rosenthal - Rays are considered more likely to move Baldelli than Crawford.

This would have multiple impacts:
(1) If both he and Wells are on the market, the cost comes down.
(2) I'd rather have Baldelli - he's already signed.
(3) Buchholz and Albers?  Sold.

why?

Similar Batters through Age 24
Gary Matthews
Ellis Burks
Carlos Beltran
Garry Maddox
Vernon Wells

he's 25 and so far, has grown each year as a player. why would ANY unproven prospects be untouchable to land a guy like that?

Maybe the fact that he has an injury history.  And Hirsh still is pretty high on the prospect scale, as I would Patton on the untouchable list, which is more like, be prepared to pay for getting them.  If Hirsh is being offered, it would be 1-1 not part of the 2 for 1.

I have to agree with this.

Berkman is untouchable.  Oswalt is untouchable.  The rest of the organization is fair game.

Let's keep in mind that Buchholz was the crown jewel of one of the Hun's bigger deals.

He might just value him more than other GMs would.

He's had major knee surgery and elbow surgery, along with hamstring issues.  That's a little scary. Maybe he's the $6M man now, better than before, but he still seems like a significant injury risk.

I love Rocco Baldelli...but that's probably because he's so good in MVP Baseball 2005.

In the real world, he seems like a pretty big injury risk.  On the plus side, he's supposed to be a great guy and his salary is reasonable.  I'd do a Buchholz or Albers plus another lesser prospect deal for him, not sure I would do more than that.

Definitely risk/reward, though. His worst seasons were injury-filled. If he can stay healthy he'd be an outfield fixture for some time.

I agree with you about the risk.  The good thing, however, is that the money he is getting (at least in 2007-08) is pretty insignificant.  While the Astros would be giving up serious prospects to get Baldelli, he's not making $10 million a year.  So if he did get hurt, his salary wouldn't prevent the Astros from finding a replacement.

I have always thought that Pettitte, then Clemens were the eventual crown jewels of that particular deal.

Baldelli is still only 25.  It just seems like he has been around longer than that.

He has good speed but is not a top of the order guy.  His power seems to be developing a lot faster than I thought it would.  Despite being hit on the head by a fly ball (the Juice Dome is tough to track fly balls in, supposedly), he is actually a good OF, with a great arm.

Young pitching that isn't proven and/or isn't a sure thing -- I'd think that would be a good trade for Houston.

It is kind of funny how the lowly D-Rays are supplying Houston with talent -- Castilla, Backe, Huff, now maybe Baldelli.  Also, the fact they are offering Baldelli over Crawford is a sure sign new management is in town -- in the old days I can easily imagine it being the other way around.

I saw something the other day that eluded to the Rays thinking that getting Zobrist was a real big deal for them.

I realize Hunsicker said young pitching, but I bet he would entertain other ideas.  They need a reliever don't they?

Is he a true CFer or a future 1st baseman?
