Handy Checklist

from Footer,

Here's a tip to use during the Hot Stove season. Look at the lists of free agents and ask yourself these questions:

a) does this player play an outfield position, third base or catcher? Is he a solid starting pitcher?

b) Is this player a proven veteran hitter or pitcher?

c) Would this player fit in with the Astros' team philosophy?

Thanks for the link.  I usually forget to check the obvious site for Astros news.

I almost always respect her knowledge and opinions, but I can't really imagine that Hunsicker would "just for starters," demand Oswalt for Crawford.  Maybe I overvalue starting pitching, but there are very few position players equal to a real ace, imo, and Carl Crawford doesn't even come close.

Ok, let's look at the players I was hoping for:

Aramis Ramirez:
a) He plays 3B, check
b) Proven Veteran Hitter, check
c) Fit team Philosophy, plays good defense, drives in runs, check

Jason Schmidt:
a) Solid Starting Pitcher, check
b) Proven Veteran, check
c) Fit team Philosophy, Great ERA, Gives all on the mound, check

Vernon Wells:
a) CF, check
b) Proven Vereran, check
c) Fit team Philosophy, Won 3rd Gold Glove, Leader, check

ok, all 3 of mine check out!

BTW, while I think it a challenge to land all 3, these are the 3 I would like to see the Astros push the hardest for.  I think the team can land and afford all of them with Pettitte still re-signing and Clemens doing his mid-year thing.

But as with all things in baseball, what I want, and what I get don't always meet.

News out of Marlins' Land is that if, big if, they trade Crawford they would want an established starter.  Here's the scary part, name 2 of those that are Astros.  That's why she said Oswalt.

And poof!  Up in smoke goes all talk of trading for Sheffield.

Her view of Huff's return is the first I have heard on the negative side.  I think some thought it was a forgone conclusion.

While we're discussing Footer (and since this seems to be the new general free-agent thread), she now says,

In other free-agent news, the Astros have contacted the agent for right-hander Jeff Suppan

While it makes complete sense, this is the first time I've heard Suppan connected with the Astros.

Is there any chance the Astros might be looking at this Iwamura guy, who just got posted by the Yakult Swallows [brief round of Beavis-and-Butthead-esque snickering]? He's 27, plays great 3B, and hits for avg. and power (44 HR in 2004, 32 this year). Obviously there's the risk that he'll be another Kaz Matsui, but I just wonder if Drayton might be tempted to tap into the Japanese fan base, etc.

I don't know, aren't the Yankees or Mariners going to give him the GDP of a small third world country?  I thought that's what always happens in cases like this.

yankees and Ms have too much money invested in their current 3bs to go after him. and the astros havent scouted these players enough to make any real attempts after him, but thats supposed to change the next few years

i was told before the season ended he would be back. her view is more current.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

As it will many times this off-season... "Things Change"

There are several candidates out there for the Astros to choose from, but part of the choosing comes in will they choose us?  And what is it going to cost?

But I think at each area the Astros could/should target there are multiple ways they can do it...  That is good and bad...

Waiting sucks for us who are not "in the loop" though!

the interest was mutual at that time, and both sides said so. her comment was equivocal so we'll see.
