BY JIM BAUMBACH Newsday October 26, 2006, 12:04 PM EDT

The Yankees have not yet officially picked up Gary Sheffield's $13 million 2007 option, although they "probably will" in due time, a person familiar with the situation told Newsday.

... Sheffield bristled at the notion that they did so and intended to trade him. ...that's exactly what the Yankees plan to do, ... Sheffield reiterated that he really wants to become a free agent so he can seek a three-year deal on the open market,...Regarding the Yankees' plans to pick up the option and turn around and trade him, Sheffield said, "This will not work. This will not work at all."

Sheffield told the paper that he heard the Red Sox, Tigers, Cubs and Angels were interested in him, and it's also believed that the Phillies and Astros are potential trade partners for the Yankees. Link

That last sentence suggests that the writer is speculating ("believed" by whom?) that the Yankees might want something from the Astros for Sheffield. After they pick up his option.  It's jammed up against what Sheffield said so to appear to have more credibility that it deserves.  Pure speculation it seems.

Heard similar speculation (Sheffield to Houston) from Cowherd this morning.  It made me want to drive into a bridge abutment.

I saw Sheffield hit probably the most impressive HR I've evr seen inperson, at MMPUS (or Enron, I guess) when he was a Dodger.  A line shot that was rising when it hit the stanchion (or whatever they call the thing the lights are mounted on) above left-center field and bounced back down.  I don't know how far it might have gone otherwise, and it left the park in a blink.  I'll never forget it.

I saw Slammy hit one similar, but Sheffield's got out quicker.

That was 5-6 years ago, though; I don't know what Sheffield has left.

I know...age/injury bug worries me a bit, but the guy did play in 150+ games for three straight seasons prior to last year's wrist injury...and played well mind you.  I think it comes down to what we'd have to give up.

 Drayton's soul.

I know, I know... some of you are perfectly OK with that, but I like rooting for "good guys", not admitted 'roid users and clubhouse cancers.  Wasn't the term clubhouse cancer coined for Sheffield?

Right, I'm sure Cashman is shaking in his boots.  Let's see, Shef can either play and earn 13$M in '07 or make a point and all the while put a handful of noth'n in his pocket.  Such a point would also seem to set him up nicely for his next contract.

I don't think so...See Soriano saga 2006.

yeah i dont think the yankees care about his bitching considering its nothing new for him. but it could hurt his trade value if the yankees actually wanted to trade him

I don't think anyone's going to be scared off by Sheffield's meaningless banter, at least not in terms of worrying about whether or not he'll play (due to reasons I've already stated).

What would I give up for 1 year of Sheffield?  Not really sure and would have to think about it, but Lidge is certainly a place to start.  He makes quite a bit of money and doesn't have too much left w.r.t. club control.  Not sure if the Yanks would be interested in that though, given Mariano and Farnsworth.
The test of a true champion is how he reacts to adversity on days when it is bound to come.

DING! DING! DING!

Exactly.  Sheffield always does this.  He is apparently a person who needs conflict in his life, and if he doesn't get it from without, he conjures it up from within.  For some reason, a lot of GMs take it personally.  Sheffield was born 30 years too late -- he would've fit in perfectly on the Charlie Finley A's.

Anyway, I don't think it makes him a bad guy, neccesarily; a lot of people bitch about their jobs, they just don't have 100 guys around writing it all down.

If he can hit at anywhere near his best, the rest of it is secondary.

I've told this story before, but when Sheffield was a hot-shit SS with the Brewers and was doing his time in El Paso (when El Paso was the AA club of the Brewers), we had a chance to go out, as Little Leaguers, and get autographs of our favorite Brewer farmhands (like Billy Spiers; no shit).

I took my ball cap over to be signed by a Gary Sheffield who still had the gold "G" and "S" in his two front teeth (classy).  He looked right at me, couldn't have been, what, 18?  And says "fuck you.  I ain't signing any more fucking things."

I was 10?  11?

Class.

Exactly the sort of class I'd like to see hitting 5th in our lineup this year.

Don't make me bust out my Sheffield Little League stories.  He was a dickhead when he was 10 or 11 himself.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Not sure "scared off" is the right term, but "turned off" might work.  If I was a GM or a manager, I'd get sick of dealing with pricks like this, regardless of their production.  Either he is letting you know that he will be difficult to deal with, or he is a dumbass.  Why bother with either?

Yep.  I'm a year older than he is, but we lived in sort of "overlapping" neighborhoods, where I knew the guys from his neighborhood and he knew the guys in mine.  He was always known as a bit of a crybaby.

I've never had a story turn me off a ballplayer so quickly.  I hope the Yankees make him their backup catcher.
