The Yankees have not yet officially picked up Gary Sheffield's $13 million 2007 option, although they "probably will" in due time, a person familiar with the situation told Newsday.
... Sheffield bristled at the notion that they did so and intended to trade him. ...that's exactly what the Yankees plan to do, ... Sheffield reiterated that he really wants to become a free agent so he can seek a three-year deal on the open market,...Regarding the Yankees' plans to pick up the option and turn around and trade him, Sheffield said, "This will not work. This will not work at all."
Sheffield told the paper that he heard the Red Sox, Tigers, Cubs and Angels were interested in him, and it's also believed that the Phillies and Astros are potential trade partners for the Yankees.
Link That last sentence suggests that the writer is speculating ("believed" by whom?) that the Yankees might want something from the Astros for Sheffield. After they pick up his option. It's jammed up against what Sheffield said so to appear to have more credibility that it deserves. Pure speculation it seems.
