Way to go Berkman

I'm sure there will be some 2nd guessing in St. Louis on the decision to pitch to Lance with 1st base open.

Great game.  Just got back.  I was shocked they didn't put him on intentionally, especially after he got ahead 2-0.

THe great thing is that I wore my hitherto cursed Berkman jersey, and now it is exorcised.  It's all ready for next season.

A white hot Luke Scott on deck must have played heavily into Tank Commanders decision not to put Sir Lance on.

Scott was working on an oh-fer.  This reminds us of two things: (1) La Russa can brainfuck with the best of 'em; and (2) the Jakes have no pen whatsoever.

If you're going to pitch to Lance, with Scott on deck, you go to your lefty.  La Russa's got nothin'.  He may still be taking this shitpile to the post season, but they're not going very far.

Maybe he's scarred from bringing in Ray King all those times to "turn around" Lance, and then watching Ray turn around as Lance took him deep.

You're right though, no pen, no starting pitching depth, no Edmonds, Rolen struggling with injuries, the team doesn't look poised for an October run. That being said, the Mets are going to war with a Pedro who hasn't won a game since Aug. 9th, Glavine, and El Duque. October is wide open for the teams that make it.

The NL should get beat in the WS but that doesn't mean that they will. Winning 4 of 7 isn't a stretch for an NL team that wins 60 out of 100 or 53 out of 100, versus an AL team that wins 61 out of 100 or 58-ish out of 100. They'd just have to get hot at the right time.

True, but the AL team's wins are typically against stronger opposition, when you consider how many shit teams there are in the NL (including most of those contending for playoff spots).

Yeah, AL wins are more significant than NL wins. I can't remember a year when the NL was more evenly balanced then it is now, but evenly bad in comparison to the AL.

I still think your earlier point is correct, that anyone can win a 7-game series.

Translated into a full season, 4-3 is 93-69 and 3-4 is 69-93. No matter how bad the National League is, I don't think the difference between the top teams in both leagues is that great.

Definitely. Great thing about baseball, any team can beat any team and the best only win about 60% of the time. The odds would be on the AL's side for sure, and esp. on a big stage, but the NL could easily win it, no question.

It's not so much to do with the record, it's the state of the NL teams going into October.  Most of 'em are inherently flawed or hobbled from their mid-season glory.  I'm not sure the AL contenders are in such bad shape overall.

But, of course, I do accept that any team can win a 7-games series.  Shit, it would be nice for the NL representative to win one freakin' game!
