Quote:I remember the move and remember thinking- why did they do that. Wheeler wasn't a known commodity at all. Sure turned out great.
Quote:Hadn't heard that before, Jim. Interesting.

It helped that when the Mets came to Houston that summer to play at Minute Maid, Wheeler (who was to the Mets what Borkowski is the Astros right now) had an amazing game of no-hit, no run pitching in extra innings. He was nasty that night and the Astros got to see the potential first hand.

I was instantly impressed that he took up for new teammates.

I was instantly impressed that he took up for new teammates. It wasn't his first, but he did retaliate for the Cubs coming after Beltran, Berkman and Oswalt in one game. Late in the game, Dot Wheeler (also known as Wrecking Ball) plunked Derek Lee in the small of his back. Lee trotted to first base as he should and then Dot finished off the game. What was the best outcome of that particular non-incident was how irate Dusty Baker got at Wheeler and the Astros. He promised to seek revenge next season and because of that he was blasted by the media and Cubs organization of focusing in on the wrong things.Seems that was perhaps the beginning of the end for Dusty too.
