Astros.com basically confirms that it's a contract for Oswalt.

5 years with a 6th year option, worth up to $73 million.

Not a bad chunk of change, but probably less than he'd get if he got himself into a bidding war on the open market.

SUCK IT SportsJustice you steaming pile of fuck.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

If he had any dignity, or the paper had any backbone, the guy would be unemployed tommorrow morning.   As if it was even possible, the Oswalt signing puts even more egg on Justice/the Chronicle about the team shopping Roy in July.

Lots of people read here that have never typed a sentence in the TZ.  The choir is mostly off stage.  I'm really waiting to see how JdeJO spins this.  Maybe somebody can give him a recommendation for a job in NY.

On the radio Pinwheel says we're confusing him with JdeJO.  Says he never said Roy wouldn't sign, says he merely said Roy was upset and was going to try free agency. Says he said Purpura would've been "stupid" to trade Roy and Mclane wouldn't have allowed it. Says that he knows Roy was in play because he read it in the Baltimore, Boston, and New York papers.  Says, he said the Astros should start negotiations immediately and throw money at him. Says the Astros decided they had to sign Roy when people started calling in to the radio and complaining after they heard the story from himself.   He's now saying that this is exactly what happened.

Both of which are demonstrably false.  He's still wrong, but he's claiming to be a different wrong to Ortiz.  This could be the inspiration for a new slogan:

TOMBSTONE!

Looks like he took a spin out of the closet and dusted it off!  "I'm responsible for the Astros (pick one: "rise from mediocrity in 2005 all the way into the World Series by exposing how bad they were playing" or "signing Roy Oswalt by exposing their dastardly, evil plan of trading him to Baltimore!  I lead the charge on the Minute Maid offices and held the coats of those who wished to stone Mr. McLane")

The guy is sick.   And now, very predictable.  The last one is not good for his career.

Richard Justice, re Roy Oswalt;

1/30
And the Drayton McLane-Jeff Bagwell dispute is a story with legs. What if the insurance claim is rejected, and Bagwell ends up on the field in spring training?

That will make for some uncomfortable moments when Uncle Drayton does one of his handshake tours of the clubhouse.
He may be doing the right thing from a business standpoint even if his chances of collecting are slim. But players pay attention to how other players are treated.

Next winter's Roy Oswalt discussions got a lot more interesting this week.
The Link

7/31
Roy Oswalt won't ever feel the same about the Astros. Maybe he was going to test the free-agent market after the 2007 season regardless of what happened. Knowing his name was thrown out in discussions with the Orioles almost guarantees it.

If I'm Drayton McLane, I approach Oswalt immediately and try to sign him to a three-year extension.
The Link

8/2
I believe Oswalt is serious about leaving the Astros after 2007. At some point in his career, he probably believed he would finish his career where he began it.

But as Oswalt makes friends around the league, as he hears what it's like around the Mets and Red Sox and Yankees, he might be tempted to play for a team with a chance to win every year.

He's tired of a lack of run support. He had hoped this year would be different.

Whatever Oswalt is feeling about being offered in trades, whatever he's feeling about free agency, could be handled with one long chat.

McLane should show him he's ready to do a deal, and he shouldn't stop there.
The Link

Police arrested Ryan Leli, 18, on Friday night at Shea just before the start of the Mets' game against the Colorado Rockies game and charged him with impersonating a journalist, the Queens district attorney announced Saturday.

Prosecutors say Leli told Mets officials he worked for NBC Universal and showed a fake NBC employee identification card so he could get press credentials. ...Mets management apparently became suspicious and contacted authorities.

Leli was also charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument, falsifying business records, larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, criminal impersonation and criminal trespass Leli was scheduled to return to court Sept. 27. He faces up to seven years in prison if he is convicted.

The Mets and the Red Sox "win" every year?

Edit:  Mets have been to the playoffs only twice since 1988.  The Red Sox haven't won their division in over a decade (although they did, of course, win the WS following their first league pennant in 30 years in 2004).

I know we've effectively blocked October of '86 from our collective consciousness, but history books show that the Red Sox did in fact win the AL pennant that year.

The "league pennant" was what you're missing.  The have a 1986 AL league pennant.

So do the Astros.

Their pennant in 2004 was their first in 18 years, i.e., 1986. The one before that was 29 years earlier, i.e., 1975.

Over Donnie Moore's dead body, they did.

++++++++++

Oswalt turned 29 yesterday, yes?  So he needs to average around 18-19 wins a year until he's 40, and Voila!, he'll have 300 for his career.

Not very likely, but he probably has the best chance of anyone (other than Glavine) at this point, because he got a relatively early start, he goes deep into games and tends to get an above average number of decisions, and he has managed to this point to avoid serious arm injury.

I don't want to jinx him or anything, but I probably just did.
