Eating Around MMPUS? (Non-Tejada Related)
« on: July 29, 2006, 04:21:37 pm »
Since the food at MMPUS is, without question, the worst food of any major league park, where can a family of 3 (with a 3 year old girl) go to get something decent to eat around the park before the game?

I don't mind spending the cash to eat well, but obviously we don't want to go to a place that will look down on us and our Astros t-shirts.

Edit: What luck.  I see Sheriff Blaylock is here to tell me about his vended crapola.  Your chili sucks.

My pregame meal is almost invariably at the Givrals in the Hoa Binh shopping center on Travis. You can get a banh mi (Vietnamese po-boy) for $1.50. If you eat in, iced tea is free. I usually get several and take one into the game with me. They are easily smugglable, they keep well and are easy to eat at the park within the confines of a seat.

Or you could really get in the spirit of the game and eat at a Landry's restaurant. Or possibly Chick-fil-A.

I appreciate your help, but we really want a place to sit down that perhaps a 3 year old will enjoy.  I'm not sure my kid, who still won't eat anything as exotic as a "hamburger" will enjoy Vietnamese food.

I challenge you to make some food that tastes fresh, flavorful, and pecker-free.

I've been to about half of the current major league parks and can say, without hesitation, that your food is the worst.  Aramark should be run out of business.

So, seriously, there's not ONE fucking family-friendly restaurant within walking distance of the baseball stadium?  With all the phenomenal food in this town, you gotta be kidding me.

Mine is the best chili concoction this side of the Rio Grande!  May I suggest that you have forgotten what good food should taste like, living as long as you have away from real parts of Texas.

Actually, food in El Paso was pretty good.  It's not the depth of food you can get in (non-MMPUS) Houston, but it wasn't like I was living in Arlington.

Your chili, as well as your nachos, your hot dogs, your peanuts, your popcorn, your "bratwurst", your baked potatoes, and even your SODAS, somehow, are awful.

We thought about eating at 37 Amigos, but I read all the reviews that said it was LIKE eating Sheriff Blaylock food, but more expensive.

When are you up for re-election anyway?  I can't wait to vote your ass out for any other food slingin' authority figure.

Holy shit, that's awesome.  I want to thank you for showing me the light.  Before, I just thought you food was bad.  Now...

Downtown is geared towards bar food or higher end eating.

I suppose Irma's would meet your criteria if you're dead set on walkin from the restaurant to the park.

If you want to drive a few blocks, District 7 Grill on Hutchins is open for dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.  The food is really good and everything is 8 or 9 dollars. Muffalatas, Burgers, Salads, Pasta.  Jake will eat there, and I can find something a little more to my liking as well. The Link

And then there is always Kim Son.

If you go more towards the theatre district, you'll find more options.

Thank you very much.  This is all I asked.

Bummer.  District 7 sounded really good, but I checked their website (and called them).  They're open weekdays only.  We'll check em out before the next weekday game.  Thanks for the tip, man.

I guess we're eating at Irma's.  Is it good?

I like The Link

Plenty of choices for a picky 3 year old. And your family will enjoy the "endless" punch.

Cool, thanks guys.  We've got reservations.  Is it a total mess in there?  What I mean is...if we sit down at 4:30 for a 6:00 game, will we make it?

Andy, giving away a secret here - Hutchins is the street I use to get away from the ballpark. There are virtually no lights or stop signs all the way down to Gray or so where you can get on 288 South (if you're going that way), and there is NO ONE on that street ever. So I've driven past District 7 Grill 1000 times and each time wondered what the hell was going on in there. It's not exactly the most inviting looking establishment from the outside. So I'm very pleased that you've drawn my attention to it because it looks like a great place to go pregame or any time, really. I'll check it out next time around.

Alkie, if your daughter doesn't eat hamburgers, what in the world does she eat? By the way, there's nothing particularly exotic about many of the Vietnamese sandwiches. They come on a loaf of Frenchy bread and you can load it up with, say, grilled chicken if you want. It can be pretty damn tame.

Again, I want to thank you, but I can see you don't have a 3 year old.

Ours eats "grilled cheese" "hot dogs" and also "grilled cheese."

No, but I'm not wholly ignorant of your situation. When my nephew was three he ate sausage. He mixed it up with a glass of juice every now and then.

Sausage AND juice?  Insane.

Luckily, ours will eat Mexican food because, well, for the first 3 years of her life, she had no choice.  So, Irma's should work.

The Original Mama Ninfa's is just east of MMPUS on Navigation, I think.  About a 2-3 minute drive.

If you have a three-year-old's appetite in mind, there's a Hard Rock Cafe at Bayou Place, about 8 or 10 blocks down Texas from the ballpark.

I was just about to mention Ninfa's. That place is fucking good. If I could take the entire concept and execution of a restaurant and fellate it I would give the O' Ninfa's the college try. Not before a few margaritas of course..

District 7 is great.  I believe another location opened up on Pierce.  You can check their website if interested.

At the game last Wednesday, they were surveying the crowd on the quality of the food.  I am hoping the Aramark contract is about to expire.

There is one place in the ballpark I can say a kind word about, and it's the 1/2-pound steak dog stand near the Crawford Boxes. It's even got Sheriff Blaylock's trademark on it, and I haven't developed botulism yet.
