Carlos Lee for Francisco Cordero, Kevin Mench, and Laynce Nix.

So... who would have liked a Wilson/Taveras/Lidge deal for 2 months of Carlos Lee?

What a steal.  They get rid of the double digit blown save guy Francisco Cordero and also improve an offensive position.  Great trade for Texas.

Me either.
If having Lee were the only thing stopping the team, that would be a different question. But the differential between having Lee and Wilson isn't enough.

I disagree.  Milwaukee got a pretty good haul.

For the record - I would not do the Astros' version of the deal.

Laynce Nix is batting .094 this year.  He's an outfielder with a career .278 OBP.  He is making $345K in 2006.

Kevin Mench is good, but he's an outfielder with 12 home runs this year, and he has played more than 125 games just once in his career.  He is making $2.8 million in 2006.

Francisco Cordero has 9 blown saves in 2006 to go along with a 4.81 ERA.  His story is the American League version of Brad Lidge, sans the playoff appearances.  CoCo is making $4.125 million in 2006.

Carlos Lee is an outfielder who is on pace for a 44 HR season (ESPN.com), slugging .549 this year.  He is making $8.5 million in 2006, more than all 3 players combined that the Brew Crew are getting in return.

Talent, and salary, go up for Rangers.

The Rangers have quite an imposing lineup.  Texiera will get hot the second half and put up huge numbers--not as good as last season, but he's a force.  Lee, Young, Blalock--that's a great offense.  The only question, as always with the Rangers, is will Millwood and Padilla et al be enough?

I like the deal from Tex perspective, I don't like the Astros suggested equivalent.  I view the players suggested by Houston are better than the ones actually given up by Texas.

And Lee just might sign with Texas.

I didn't know the Rangers got Nelson Cruz also.  That's a pretty good deal for them.  Cruz could be a pretty good MLer.

I don't know...(haven't seen his stats or anything from this year) if the Brewers thought he was anything more than a 4th OF, then they wouldn't have made a trade for Mench and Nix.

Your comparison of our 3 to the Texas 3 is pretty appropos. I would actually do that IF Lee was signed beyond this year. Obviously, he isn't so I would not do it. Purpura also says he is not interested in rental players but he may have done your deal because it did not involve top prospects.

It is very unusual though for teams to trade within their own division...especially when they are about equal in the standings.

I have great respect for Brewer GM Melvin. I'm a little surprised this is the best he could do for Lee. They have a pretty good pen and Nix and Mench are roster filler to me. Lee is a hoss.

Lee publicly turning down a 4year/$48M deal didn't help his cause.

You didn't even look at his stats nor have you read anything about him but yet you say he is nothing more than a 4th outfielder?

No, I said the Brewers must think he's nothing more than a 4th OF, due to the fact that they just acquired (arguably) 2 of them.  Actually I looked at his stats through the '05 season, and read up on BBA's scouting report before posting the first time.  I just looked at his stats in '06.  Good numbers...so who the fuck cares?

The stRangers.

Which, you're right, is irrelevant here but it changes the deal considerably.

In regards to the, "who the fuck cares"...I was trying to point out that numbers aren't everything...nor does your opinion on a player's potential in the event you've seen him play regularly.  Looking at that deal...all that matters is what TX and MIL thought.  I was guessing that TX acquired him as depth-protection at that position after giving up two OFs.  In regards to MIL...if they thought Cruz was going to be as good as say Mench or better, then why trade him way.  Go trade Lee to someone else and fill a more pressing hole if that's the case.

Cruz is a fucking stud prospect too.  He's actually starting for Texas tomorrow in right field.  Tremendous deal for Texas.

Is it just me or is it deliciously ironic that the Rangers have once again traded pitching for yet another bat?  That's sort of like the Astros trading a top hitting prospect for another pitcher.

And I can't wait till the Milwaukee team physician discovers the cause of Mench's power outage: his shoes are too big.

So Nelson Cruz isn't the Nelson Cruz who pitched in the Astros organization a few years ago?

I wouldn't be shocked to see Milwaukee turn around and trade Mench this weekend to the Yanks.
