Only thing of note I can find is that Milo's daughter died from stroke complications.

Saw that only McLane and Purpura would attend.  I've seen rumors all over the place but none substantiated so I won't repeat them.

Milo retires early or the trade rumor 610 is drumming up?  I mean, that's a REALLY OLD trade rumor they think they've scooped, isn't it?

The old Tejada for Lidge, Everett and maybe Lane.  HOPE that's bogus, at least from the glove of Adam aspect, but Miguel is a hitter.

610 is saying the Tejada deal is going down.  No word on who would be traded, but in the off-season Houston offered Lidge, Everett and either Taveras or Lane.

I heard the Astros were in on the Huff dealings, however it was speculated that Detroit had a better offer and was the frontrunner.

Oswalt extension would be great, and I wouldn't be disappointed, but I'm really a-hoping for some sort of impact move for this year.

How displeased would the pitching staff be to lose Everett in a deal?

I'm thinking that Tejada at 3rd might fit if you can hold onto Everett.

The Link - Involves Huff

The Link,0,3886202.story?coll=sfla-sports-front - Involves the D-Train - sounds mostly like rumor, but it does point out that the Astros have been actively shopping Tavares.

In regards to the old Tejada deal...I can't remember where I read it, but it was stated that Everett and Lidge were no longer looked at as targets.

I am liking this trade.  A good move that gives you a better option than Jason Lane.  A nice piece.

I rescind my "ugh".  I was responding to the rumored Huff for Ensberg deal.  Huff for Talbot and Zobrist is a good deal, imo.

Good, bad, who knows?  What is interesting is what impact this has on the daily lineup.  Although, JDJO may have done some reporting, for a change, with this comment at the end of his article:

Purpura also made it clear that Huff's acquisition "will cut into (slumping Morgan Ensberg's) playing time."

 JDJO

Not sure if the "Slumping Morgan Ensberg" was stated, implied, or simply assumed.   If it was stated, that has me wondering if Ensberg is hurt?

Sending Lane to the minors is the best part of the deal, for him and the Astros.   He needs the AB's.

This sounds like a nice move to me.

What is Huff's contract situation?

Ben Zorbrist will eventually be a utility third baseman or first baseman in his career.  He's also too old to be in AA.  Talbot dropped from being a high prospect back in High A Ball.  He's probably more of a middle relief type of pitcher when all is said and done.

Hunsicker probably thinks the Rays can turn Talbot back into a starting rotation prospect, so more power to him!

The guy from KTRH asked what this move will do to Ensberg's playing time and he went on to say how it's obvious that Ensberg has been struggling.  Purp simply acknowledged Ensberg's struggles and said perhaps his shoulder is still bothering him but nonetheless this move will cut into his playing time.

Another good point that Purpura made regarding Lane was that the time has come that a player's potential now has to translate into production.
News that is sufficiently bad somehow carries its own guarantee of truth.  Only good reports need confirmation.

Put me in the camp of "Hope there is more moves in the near future, than just this."

I was a big fan of Zobrist, who looked to me like another Chris Burke.  I was hoping he could improve his defense enough to replace Everett, but I guess the Astros felt that wasn't going to happen and Burke is already being penciled in as Biggio's replacement once he retires, so 2B was out for him too.

Talbot is not that big a loss given how much other pitching talent the team has, but he was really doing well this year (much like Albers did last year).  So they didn't just give up scraps as some comments seem to indicate.

But I would feel alot better if another move was made for a bat (and only involving Ensberg if Huff is extended, as there are ZERO 3B prospects in Astros system that will be ready soon).

I like this deal an awful lot. Gives Garner plenty of roster flexibility with Huff's ability to play IF and OF corners, and he has been a slow start / strong finish hitter for most of his career, IIRC. Purp didn't sell the farm to get help, either. I think my favorite fringe benefit is the we may never again see Clank play third. I like Lamb a-plenty, and I'm well aware that Huff is not Rolen out there with the glove, but I think it's better for all concerned that Lamb is not on the left side of the infield in any capacity. Some variation of Lamb 1B, Huff 3B, Berkman RF, Burke CF seems like it'll get a fair amount of use as long as all 4 are going well. (edited to note that there's a whole thread on this that I hadn't noticed until too late)

Hey, when do the Purp-bashers weigh in on this, and what's the angle? Is it "about time, I've been saying he should do this all along, why wouldn't he listen to me"? Or is it "Huff is not a franchise player"? Or more of the "1 trade doesn't make him competent" variety? I'm truly curious.

The Hun was involved.  Obviously the Puppet Master was pulling all the strings and Purpura will look feeble once all is said and done.  We'll also need to completely disregard the context in which the trade was made or where the minor leaguers projected according  to Astros officials...

That's at once accurate, awesome, and terribly sad. Someone must tell these people that GMs don't do that sort of thing - relief pitchers like Todd Jones do.

Nice deal. I don't think the Astros gave up much either, but with Hun calling the shots in TB, who knows.

Could Ensberg be on the way out? I'd rather Huff sub at 3B and 1B and give Berkman some outfield starts.

Agreed. Lane going to AAA is the best thing for him and the team at this point.

Funny stuff. some of this radio trashing.  I love it.

Actually the baseball section of my college website has a Hun-worshipper or two speculating about whether or not PupPurp's been "wheeled" by him.  Most don't think so, though it's always in the back of your mind when you think about some of the work he was able to pull off in Houston.
