Did I read he played 2 innings there last night?  What's the point?

Phil Garner played him at short and second base last year.  Did you miss that?

Andy Pattitte was also used as a pinch hitter.  He K'd, now batting .062.  Roy sits at .091, and I'm sure he reminded him of it.

There was quite a bit of chatter between Andy and Roy on the bench after that abortion of an at bat. Then Backe got in to add his two cents.
Oye. Vamos, vamos.

I remember 1 inning as a late season lark, and, of course, the Burke game by necessity.

Last night, I just don't see the reason, especially given that even on some of his days off he catches in the 9th because of Munson's defensive shortcomings.

Garner is prepping him for a game where he'll play all 9 positions.

We thought for sure Garner was going to move him to 3rd in the 9th inning.

Even though the Astros lost, that game was fun.  At least in our section.

To get him from behind the plate (and Munson behind it) but not out of the game in case of an emergency.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Also, to give him practice at second so when Garner needs to do this in a game when it's not 10-1, it wont be a big deal.

Exactly.  There's going to come a game, a close one, perhaps a 12-inning affair, when he needs to make some moves and doesn't want to have to take Ausmus out of the game.

Garner said on tv after the game that it, along with batting Pettite, was to have some fun.  I was pretty annoyed with that . . . Berkman was on the bench and he should have been playing for the comeback.

There's something about Berkman going on the DL during a 9 run rout that I find particularly unappealing.

You think W.A. "Spack" McGrimm would have been on the bench?  Nossir.  Nothing short of multiple amputations would have kept Spack sitting, or put him on the DL. and we're talking major amputations, not just a couple of fingers or so. Since when has baseball had anything to do with fun?

Or, the thought of Berkman coming off the bench and further injuring his hamstring during a rout is particularly unappealing.

Gotcha, right, as Biggio said about their chances early, "woulda, coulda, shoulda".

Yeah, I was just kidding.  I thought Garner's interview was kinda amusing, and he basically said we had Berkman on the bench but what was the point?  Might as well have some fun.
