Houston, Tx.
« on: May 12, 2006, 12:59:05 am »
I'm glad to announce I'm packing my bags and heading down to Texas at the end of the month. My son has a week long summer league baseball tournament in Katy and I want to take full advantage of my miniature vacation.  So I need some recommendations, besides going to an Astros game, which I full intend on doing.. Where should I go? What should I see? I know of the River Walk, but help me guys...Make this trip worth while.

You see...the Riverwalk is in San Antonio, not Houston.  This board can be a little rough on newbies, especially if they think you're a troll trying to stir up trouble.  Getting something like the Riverwalk wrong would make some people inclined to think you're trying to stir up trouble.

My suggestions to you would be to take in a couple Astros games, check out the Johnson Space Center, go to the beach (Galveston).

This post is not to stir up anything, which I think is pretty obvious. I know the River Walk is in San Antonio..I only said this because it is not that far from Houston.

Thanks for the ideas.

You should check out the Marfa Lights while you're in the area. Then maybe swing down to Nuevo Laredo for a day of shopping. Oh and you must see the new Blanton Museum in Austin.

That's a good point.

I'm going to have to check out the Empire State Building after my softball game on the Washington Monument Grounds tonight.

You couldn't have seen it when it happened, but boy folks, I gotta tell you. That error really cost him in the end. The ejection from the game was the final straw, but what a difference one fielding blunder can make.

What is so strange about driving to San Antonio to see the River Walk (and presumably the Alamo) if you are going to be down in Houston?  I've often thought about driving to San Antonio with the kids for a day trip when I go down to Houston to see my folks.  And in the past I've driven to Austin just for the day to see friends.

Setting aside the fact that he was just lying, taking day trips like this isn't unheard of.

And it's not like driving from NY to Wash. DC, which with traffic is going to cost you five hours each way.  That would be like back and forth to Dallas in a day (which I've also done, but I don't recommend).
Boom!

Dang.

And I was all set to suggest to him, as part of his itenerary while visiting, a walking tour of the  Flower Gardens, perhaps?   Beautiful place, and its not that far, only about 100 miles out.

There is a pretty decent change that I am going half way out there on Saturday (don't have a big enough boat or enough money in the account to go all the way).  I can give him a ride.

Boat size : how far out you'll go :: Er, member size : how timidly you'll proposition a woman

In other words, boat size, schmoat size -- it's all in the attitude, my brother.

I've been out at the 12-mile rigs off Bolivar in a reasonably sized vessel, and have seen guys go by in 14-ft. aluminum john boats, loaded with their families and extra 5-gallon gas cans, ocean water up to the gunwales.  Heading further out.

Attitude.

I have seen john boats 30 miles off, does not mean I would do it.  I have a 22 ft boat, 200 hp carb motor and 100 gallons of fuel.  I burn between 60 and 70 gallons on a normal 40 mile round trip with trolling, so unless I go about 10 miles per hr, it is not possible for me to get to the gardens.

Also, before 3 kids, I took a lot more risk.  Now I do not go offshore without my Epirb, secondary VHF, and unlimited tow package.

So I guess I have small eggs.

Besides, a troll can drown 40 miles off just as easily as 100 miles off.

Shouldn't have told me this.  I have family in Dickinson I visit fairly regularly.  Next time I'm down there, I'm gonna be stumbling around League City asking people, "Say, do you know this Astroholic guy, the one with the somewhat big boat?"

Besides finding this out, the other good thing to come out of this troll thread for me is the title of it.  For some reason, every time I log in and see it, I start singing Doug Sahm's "Houston Chicks".

And that's a good thing.

Just let me know and I might be able to fit you in. I have to pick my days to go offshore, but when I can't I am in the bays.  BTW, my grandparents had a bayhouse in San Leon when I was growing up, so I am really familiar with Dickinson

Big Bend is a mere 800 or so miles from Zwolle, and you could also hit an Astros game and the Riverwalk on the way.

Isn't Toledo Bend almost dried up? I saw a bunch of stumps in the south end a few weeks ago. Hurricane damage?

I have a mental list of reasons to get out of bed each morning.  I won't bore you with them -- most involve sex and alcohol one way or another -- but this right here is another reason:

Low water levels = overproduction of electricty?  Who knew?  I've got a call in to Entergy now and boy, are they going to get an earful.

Attitude and a good weather report.  I've also "seen" people go up to Sierra Nevada high country in July and freeze to death in a snowstorm.

I knew that all of the bass tournaments scheduled for TB were moved to SR due to the low water level, so now we have a bunch of sore-lipped bass nobody can catch...fished out.

Hmmm, they are only generating 5 hrs a day, just like we are. Isn't the Sabine River Authority and Entergy in a big lawsuit due to water level debate?
