Revert back this weekend
« on: May 10, 2006, 11:50:38 am »
For better or worse.  Borkowski seems to have pitched his way into a longer stay with the club.  Performance-wise Gallo & Zeke seem to be the likely candidates for a demotion.

Does Gallo have options?
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

You would leave the club without a lefty in the pen?  (FTR, I know Miller is due back soon, but this doesn't change the fact that there would be no major league lefty relievers in the pen if Gallo was dumped).

I'm a better LHP than Miller, and I'm right-handed.

I hate Trever Miller.  I would take Hipolito Pichardo over Trever Miller.

I think Gallo will be fine, but if the choice were between a righty who can get lefties out or a southpaw who can't, I'm going with the former.  I want a pitcher who gets hitters out.

Gallo will never be fine.

Honest question: does Borkowski have a history of being good against lefties?  I know he's done well in his short time up with the big club, but he'd also "pitched a shut-out" as Brownie(?) pointed out - just before he gave up a monster shibby to Kent.  As far as lefties go, he faced two, retired one and walked one (Drew, who circled the bases in front of Ol' Bluebonnet).

Qualls does, dunno about Borkowski.  Revert allowed a sub .230 BA against lefties in '03 & 04, but not so good last year.

We've done it before. McLemore would be a left handed option to replace him...I guess.

No way in hell.  He's still rehabbing an elbow injury.

I agree.  I don't care what arm a pitcher thorws with.  If a righty can get lefthanded hitters out more successfully than someone who throws lefthanded, who cares?

So: Drop Miller, make Gallo compete.  His lefthandedness shouldn't guarantee him a job.

Miller went an inning for RR today at Tacoma. 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K.

Since the start of the 2004 season, lefties have hit Gallo for a .296 average.

This is not a sample size issue.  He simply cannot get major league hitters out.  His time is up.

Are they trying to build him back up to be a starter?

Not sure.  But right now he's splitting games with Jared Gothreaux.  He went 2.1 innings today, his longest outing since coming back recently.

I say we forget the lefty idea since we don't have a left hander who can get anyone out. Look at the DBACKs- their bullpen has been one of the best in baseball ERA wise so far this season and they don't have a single lefty in the pen. It's an over rated idea, you can either get guys out or you can't and as of now are lefties can't.
Make a runnnnnnnn!!!!

There is none.  I'm hoping he gets DFA'ed when they activate Miller.

He was fairly effective last year, although I'll confess I hadn't realized he was far more effective getting righties out than lefties in 2005.
