A decade of crap
« on: May 08, 2006, 06:58:48 pm »
I was trolling through archive.org today, and I came across  this little nugget from 2002. It seems that AstrosConnection.com (a.k.a. the Big Freight Train), which as most of us know was the forerunner to the modern-day OWA, was begun in 1996. Now that was 2 years or so before I happened to come upon it, but it seems that sometime this year (perhaps even sometime this month or next, given the reference to Scott's graduation) will be the 10 year anniversary of the creation of the ol' BFT.

So, I just thought I'd take a moment to reflect on a decade of the AC/OWA experience, and I'd like to thank Kev, Scott, and their successors (including the current group of OWA admins) for the time, energy, and knowledge they've dedicated to creating a place for me and thousands others to completely waste our time and avoid doing any work whatsoever.

We vicariously live through men who get paid to play a game. They use a stick and a ball, and they run around in circles, and we are obsessed with it. AC/OWA feeds and nurtures that obsession, and for that I thank you.

Thank you for supporting my obsession and my procrastination.

Actually, I guess I didn't need to go to archive.org. I forgot that it was transported over  here from the old site.

But the point still stands...

From the 2nd record of the archive , circa February 1999:

"The Clemens saga is expected to draw to a close soon. The Grocer Drayton McLane has stated that he wants a resolution to this thing by the end of the week so it will cease being a distraction."

The more things change...

I've only been privy to about 7 years of crap, having first seen the light in the  late summer of '99. It's been fun as hell through the years in one form or another, and I'm glad I finally got around to posting on a semi-regular-ish basis. Many thanks to Kev and Scott, and to everyone who has carried the torch and pushed the pixels since the retirement of the BFT.
"We live in a society of laws. Why do you think I took you to all those Police Academy movies? For fun? Well, I didn't hear anybody laughing, did you?"

One other thing I noticed on that page:

Meanwhile, Jays fans are bent out of shape about this photo, which appeared in The Sporting News feature on their "all-throwback" team, which is clearly not an old Toronto uni, but does have a big "a" on it.

Does anyone know of a copy of said photo? I've looked but come up with nothing.

I wish I could remember how exactly I stumbled upon AC.com in the first place.

I want to thank everyone who ever lent us a helping hand, wrote a column or series preview, wrote us fan or hate mail, or made a post in the TZ, GZ, or ill-fated SZ.

What was the SZ?  No memory of that.

The SlamZone.  I had completely forgotten about that.  I can't even remember exactly what it's purpose was.  But I suspect that it involved HD rants.

Hah, I remember that one. SZ got terribly sloppy, but had its moments. I think it co-existed with Yakball... which, wasn't some kind of visual prize for that, a big Golden Scott erected (huh huh) over the LCF wall where that high-rise condo complex was supposed to go up?

I still have my Yackball high score screenshot saved somewhere.  A truely proud moment.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.
