Figured you all could use a good beer thread.

Favorite Mexican beers.

Dos XX Lager (the green bottle)
Corona

Go figure, I don't go for some of the specialty beers.

Go Astros!!!

Michelada

From NPR , August 15, 2001

From our U.S. border states, trickling up from Mexico, Michelada is roughly translated as "my cold beer".  This spicy cocktail concoction is a beer with lime and some peppery seasoning. It's kind of like a Tomato Beer without the tomato.

i n g r e d i e n t s

1/2 lime, preferably a Key lime
Coarse salt
2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
1 dash soy sauce
1 dash Tabasco sauce
1 pinch black pepper
1 dash Maggi seasoning, optional
12 ounces beer, preferably a dark Mexican beer like Negra Modelo.

d i r e c t i o n s
Squeeze the juice from the lime and reserve. Salt the rim of a highball glass by rubbing it with the lime and dipping it in coarse salt. Fill with ice.
Add lime juice, Worcestershire, soy sauce, Tabasco, pepper and Maggi, if desired.
Pour in beer, stir and serve, adding more beer as you sip.

Yield: 1 cocktail

Edit to add:  Also good with a splash of Bloody Mary mix.
RO RASROS!

My local cheap 'n' cheerful Tex-Mex has recently started serving micheladas.  It's an interesting drink, but I couldn't drink more than 5 of 'em.

I was in Mexico City a month-or-so ago, and the client I was with ordered one at lunch (I love doing business in Mexico).  They had two kinds: one with and one without the hot stuff.  I have also had it confirmed by Mexican friends that it's legit.

This assumes that I am not the victim of some vast Mexican conspiracy...

Dos XX is a german beer made in Mex.

It depends upon the time of day but I like a Tecate in a can with salt in lime on the rim in the morning after a heavy night of drinking.

Kroger has a beer called Tortuga or somethin of the sorts.  Not premium but pretty damn good at 6.99 a 12 in mexican longnecks.

By that logic, Tecate is also a German beer, seeing as how both Tecate and Dos XX are the same beer, brewed by the same people.

Andy and I came out of the subway into the middle of things.  Actually, as we were coming out of the subway, the students were rushing down to avoid the police who were arriving.  We had this little old French lady in front of us, pushing our way up like an icebreaker, and this rather largish French lady behind us cursing like a sailor.  Or something.  It sounded like French cursing to me.

I was scared that if we said anything we'd be recognized as Americans and have the crap beat out of us. But when you looked around, all the students seemed so happy, just like spring break.  I got grabbed by a policeman when we started walking through the barricade, but then I bleated something random about our hotel being over yonder and they let us through.

Kris came through an hour or so later, and all of it, the students, the police, the police vans, was gone.  She, being a woman with a woman's strong sense of direction, immediately took off the wrong way from the subway station and ended up behind the barricades at a new location.  The students there had a cheery blaze going on some little french car and another car flipped.  We went back later that night to admire the car damage and the glass on the street from the broken windshields.

It was the highlight of Andy's trip.

FEMSA, the largest beer company in Mexico produces Tecate, Dos XX, Sol, Bohemia, Indio, Superior, and Carta Blanca.  They are the Mexican equivalent to Anheuser-Busch.  "Carta" is the Budweiser of Mexico, what the local working man drinks.

Corona is brewed by Modelo, who also brews Modelo, Negra Modelo, and Pacifico among others.  50% of Modelo is owned by Anheuser-Busch.

Basically there are two Mexican beers, Corona and Dos Equis, marketed under a dozen or so different labels.  They all blow.  Chunks.

A Mexican friend of mine is into drinking (sipping) straight tequila.  She says it requires the good stuff, and when I say the good stuff, I mean the $100/bottle stuff.  I do not know any specific brands off the top of my head (I'm a Scotch man), but the better stuff is going to be way more expensive than you thought tequila could be.

I like tequila allot.  The good stuff is usually designated anejo, which as I recall means ancient or old, and it's like drinking congac or brandy.  There's a website I once found that had a long discussion of different brands, and the only one I can remember is Centenario.  There was a Herederia I liked, too.

I did find this websit, though:  The Link

German beers.  And yes, I'm aware of that the German beer that gets exported is nowhere near as good as what you get fresh from the local bierhaus in Bavaria...but it's the best you can get here.  I can ocassionally choke down a black and tan.  When forced to drink something else, I go with Shiner.  Not because it tastes great, necessarily, but because it makes me feel like a real Texan when I'm pickin' on the back porch.

Man, I tried some of that German budwizer that you buy at specks and I did not like it (don't know if it was a bad batch or what).  I also do not like Shiner.  I will not drink miller lite or corona.  Anything else is fair game.

I would have enjoyed that more if it weren't for the fact that they show a gorilla playing a trumpet, but it sounds like a tenor sax. Annoying.

Shows what you know.  That's how gorillas sound when they play the trumpet.

My local cheap 'n' cheerful Tex-Mex has recently started serving micheladas.  It's an interesting drink, but I couldn't drink more than 5 of 'em.

My friendly local texmexaria also serves it. I was having a late dinner with a buddy of mine who just got back from Monterrey who had become enraptured by them. It was a good drink, but the spicy version required mucho queso to quench the heartburn.

The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Budvar (Czechvar) is Czech.

Interesting story why they can't call their beer, which has been brewed for about 7 centuries, Budweiser anymore:  The Link

Never had it in the States.  Tasted good from the keg over there.

Any beer or style in particular?  Or should I wait until the German national holiday (whatever the hell that might be) to ask?

I'm not a big fan of Mexican beers, either.  There are some good ones, I'm sure, but usually by the time I hear about them they're so fucking trendy I won't drink them just on prinicple.

If we ever get around to Dominican beer, though, I'm voting for an ice cold Presidente.

Actually, it's Tag der deutschen Einheit (October 3rd).  Reunification day, basically.  I Googled it to make me look smart, then posted the message I wrote prior to doing the search.  Genius, I am.  Oh well.

Is it beer-o'clock yet?

Try Herradura if you can get your hands on it.  Pricey, but a good sipping tequila.  Also, less expesive is the Don Julio White Tequila.
I love Geoff Leach.  Every day.

Hey, how about Pulque ?  That's been the favorite drink of Mexicans long before Cortes.

I got a good friend at work from the D.F. that says "that will give you the shits, but it's soooo good.  But you got to get it out in the country..."  Who wants to run to Mexico tonight?

Try Corralejo.  It's a reposado but not as expensive as Patron.  Sippin' tequila, no lime or salt required.  As far as beer, any of you ever try Regia?  It's from El Salvador and only comes in quart bottles.  Damned fine beer.

Pulque is also know as balba de diablo--devil's spit. Its an apt name because it has the vicosity of snot complimented by a vaguely fecal aftertaste. The only reason to drink it is it is very inexpensive. But you will pay later...

I once lived near a tequila bar in Mexico City (Coyohuacan), and Mexico makes a lot of tequilas that aren't easy to find in El Norte. But a good one that I've seen in liquor stores is Hornitos.

I don't think you need to get in the silly-expensive ($100) range to find a good tequila. Just go to a good liquor store and buy a couple bottles in the $20-30 dollar range (but not Cuervo--it's good but not great). Worst that can happen is you don't like it straight and you can turn it into Margaritas.

Or find a bar that stocks a variety. I don't recommend experimenting with full shots; ask if they will give you half shots of a variety of tequilas. It won't take many shots for your ability to appreciate the individual flavors to be drowned out by the ghost of Pacncho Villa whispering UNO MAS TEQULIA UNO MAS TEQUILA stridently in your ear. Be wary of Senor Villa. El Gran Revolutionario doesn't like gringos (stupid Pershing) and it pleases El Senor to give gringos very bad ideas.
