Points from last night's game
« on: May 05, 2006, 08:35:51 am »
1.  Taveras looks like a totally different hitter.  If he continues through the season, the offensewill be hard to beat.
2. This was one of those situations where the "save" belonged to Wheeler rather than Lidge.  Wheeler made the heart of the order look easy while Lidge struggled with the bottom of the line-up.
3. Great clutch hitting and production all the way down the order.
4.  This could be a great year for Astros fans, especially if the young pitching continues to deliver.
Any word on Backe's progress?

The night guys on 610 think Backe is done for the year, and will probably have Tommy John-type surgery.  If that were to happen, it's a 1.5 year recovery time, most likely costing him next year as well.

It is, however, what is an option for Backe.  The Astros organization want him to hold off on the surgery option to see if just rest and rehab will suffice (which will happen sometimes).  Backe has talked to other pitchers who have had TJS and he is said to be leaning heavily towards getting the procedure done.  BTW - the surgery itself and recovery isn't as long and tedious as it once was.  If done correctly and the regime of rehab is adhered to, the once feared recovery time of two years is down to months.

If all of this is true, and I am not saying it isnt, that makes signing Clemens much more important.

Lidge didn't face the bottom of the line-up, he faced three pinch hitters then the top of the line-up.

The most recent news, Footer 5/3

Brandon Backe has been going through his pitching motion with two-pound weights, but that's as far as he's gone in terms of baseball-related activities.

"It's sore still, which is upsetting," Backe said. "It probably has a lot to do with all the exercises I've been doing. I'm just trying to strengthen that up, and I'm hoping that's all it is. It's sore to touch, that's for sure."

Biggio doesn't bobble Rolen's bouncer in the 2nd, likely Pettitte allows no runs.

Yeah, but really, Eckstein is the only hitter he faced that I wouldn't consider a "bottom of the lineup" kind of hitter (unless you count John Rodriguez, but I don't think he's earned consideration as a real threat quite yet.)

Exactly my point.  Footer's article does not mention TJS, so where is that option being discussed?  On 610 radio of course.  Is there a credible source?

1.  That's not the point, and

2.  I wouldn't consider Rodriguez or Spezio to be bottom of the order guys.

Rodriguez hit one about 420 feet to center on Wednesday. He also hit one 400+ feet left field side of Tal's hill in Game 4 of the NLCS last year. I'd say he is a legitimate threat. The Crimson Vag yakked against Roy on Wednesday as well. Nothing 'bottom of the order' about those two.
Oye. Vamos, vamos.

Nope, and I was agreeing with you. Way to early to say anything definitive.  Of course, the entire course of treatment, including sawing the arm off, was discussed by the Astros as an option when he first went on the DL

How about making him throw left-handed?  It worked for Billy Wagner, and would've worked for Bagwell if he wasn't such a pussy!

The way he hits, they could move him to shortstop.

I didn't get my info from 610.  Backe did discuss TJS with another player because he wants to make an informed decision.  The Astros are worried that Backe will decide on TJS as well.  It is his decision, not the team at this point.
