Brett and Dave not making any friends in Cincinnati
« on: May 01, 2006, 03:59:12 pm »
I listened to the game yesterday on XM. They had the Reds' feed. Around the 8th inning, Marty mentions getting an email from a fan who's sister lives in Houston. This lady tells her sister who tells Marty who then tells the listening audience that Brett and Dave are on the Astros broadcast bad-mouthing a particular columnist for the Cincinnati Enquirer. It seems that this columnist wrote that the Reds' only serious competition for the Central Division is the Cardinals. According to this game of "telephone", Brett and Dave started calling out the columnist, saying he knows nothing about baseball, and he should open his eyes to the good team that the Astros have.

Well, Marty went to town on that. Again, he's hearing this 4th person. He talks about Brett and Dave's inexperience, calling them "bush league", and basically saying thatthey are unprofessional and idiots for making their remarks about the columnist. He also claims that Brett and Dave were saying that there were no good places to eat in Cincinnati, which Marty nearly had a heart attack arguing.

I briefly looked through the  Reds section of the Enquirer and didn't find the article in question. I can't verify the article or the comments on the Astros broadcast, but Marty went off after simply getting an email. I normally enjoy listening to him call a game. He's still good at it, but that 8th inning yesterday was a trip.

This reminds me of one time in high school when one of our cheerleaders got into a hair-pulling fight with one of their cheerleaders. It got ugly.

Cincinatti Enquirer  4/30
(sorry for the caps) BY PAUL DAUGHERTY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Now the Reds are 17-7 and starting to show they can win games when they don't hit several home runs. A quick glance at the competition reveals St. Louis and not much. In a three-game series, the Cardinals can throw Chris Carpenter, Mark Mulder and a rejuvenated Sidney Ponson. They still have Scott Rolen and the Great Pujols in the center of the order. But Jim Edmonds is almost 36, no one else in the lineup frightens you and their fourth and fifth starters, Jason Marquis and Jeff Suppan, are less than special.
When does the bandwagon begin selling seats?
The Link

I saw this and let it go.  They're giddy because of a slow roller made it through the middle of the Astros infield and a foul ball that scored two runs.  But E-mail [email protected]

That's what happens with fourth-hand information.  I was listening during the innings in question; Brett and Dave were calling Cincinatti "Porkopolis" and talking about how much delicious pork they had eaten recently.  Goofy, but not insulting.

The columnist they called out was supposedly identified by other Cincinatti sportswriters as someone who thought baseball was too slow to watch.  They dismissed him rather than attacking him (although I guess you could say a dismissal is a pretty big attack).  At any rate, a silly thing to get riled up over, especially when you're working with 4th-hand information.

In fact, when they showed Dave and Brett on TV yesterday, they were wearing bibs from some Cincinnati barbecue restaurant.  Free advertising.

Fuck the Reds.  Much like Lopez not getting the content issue, if Marty has a problem with Brett/Dave calling out a shitty local column, perhaps Marty should address the central issue--the shitty local column.

These cock sucks are about to get pounded back to the second division where they belong.

And, by the way, the food does suck in Ohio.  Anyone telling you differently is full of shit.
You see pal, that's who I am, and you're nothing. Nice guy, I don't give a shit. Good father, fuck you. Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here, close. You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? You can't take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit?

Daugherty in 1997, in a column titled "It's Time for DH in the NL":

There has always been a snobbery at work in the NL, fatted by the notion that pitchers hitting and managers thinking is the superior way to play the game.

Personally, I'd rather see a hitter hit than a manager think.

...

The purists sit in the stands with sharpened pencils, radio to their ears, debating lefty-righty percentages and promoting the greatness of the double switch. To them, thinking is an essential part of the game.

But these are not thinking times. These are not days for quietly pondering defensive replacements and the merits of middle relief. These are days of exploding scoreboards and the 24-hour highlight. Living in the time of Prime is a risky business for baseball, which dispenses its pleasures more slowly.

Baseball may have been more civilized and classy when everybody's pitchers had to know how to bunt. But that was a long time ago. When, it could be argued, everything was more civilized.

Now, everything is louder.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

Hmmmm... I heard the broadcast coming home from a weekend away trip and this is far from the truth.  Raymond mentioned the "not much else" part of Daughtery's column and said he went to go talk to the columnist prior to the game *at the Cincy press box*.  He was *told* by the other media guys that Daughtery was not there because he wasn't much of a baseball fan, he thought the game was too boring and slow to watch.  This was the slam by *OTHER* media members in Cincy.

Raymond went to talk to this columnist because he couldn't believe anyone would dismiss the Astros.  He was told by the Cincy guys to forget about it, the guy was a tool.

As far as the food, they were raving about it... even the skyline chili.  Marty Brennamen owes them an apology for the "bush league" remarks.

I just listened to the archived version of the audio.  (It's at about 3:08:30 if you have the GameDay audio package, which I broke down and bought this year.  Was only 15 bucks or something.)

It wasn't as bad as I expected, and he didn't specifically call them "bush league", he said they had been bouncing around in the bush leagues (if that matters).  Sounded to me like he did get a little overly excited based on what he heard through the grapevine, but whatever.  He did seem to be a bit protective of that particular columnist, so maybe they are drinking buddies or something.

1. Raymond and Dolan did not slam the columnist, the *OTHER CINCY media* guys did.

2. Raymond and Dolan did not slam the food in Cincy, they praised it.

They did nothing to merit even the hint of being on Marty's hit list for the day, mild or not.  He owes them an apology.

Fair enough.  I wasn't trying to defend Marty, it just wasn't the bitchfest I expected.  Of course, I do read this board pretty regularly so maybe my bitchfestometer needs recalibrated...

Sorry, if Bucyrus is in Ohio then any foodstuffs sold therein must suck.  Its in the Ohio state constitution.

Food sucks, bartenders can't make a margarita, and the hometown play by play guy is losing his marbles.

Ohio is where you'd stick the hose if you wanted to give the US an enema.

It's not about a bitchfest, it's about being wrongly accused by second hand information.  Some listener in Houston phones his sister who told Marty and he went off?  He knows better than that.

They're kind of excitable in Cincinnati right now.  They can't decide whether being in first in April has any meaning.  They want it to but they keep hedging.  They're excited about beating Oswalt and lifting "The Curse".  Sounding like they're mounting a revival of "No, No, Nanette".  That Phillips guy has them running in smaller and smaller concentric circles. They've got Bronson Arroyo  pitching on short rest like it's the playoff.  To put it succiently, they're dancing around like a bunch of  Kansas City faggots they're so excited about not being crappy.

I was mainly surprised that he made a big deal out of it at all, since he was hearing about it entirely through the grapevine, and he didn't give the boradcasters the benefit of the doubt.

Of course compared to OWA his rant was very tame, but then again, an OWA bitchfest would likely get him permanently barred from the airwaves.

And I guess I misheard the "bush league" comment. Thanks for pointing that out.

Their so full of shit in Cinci. They did the same shit in '04 I believe. They jumped out pretty hot and were actually leading the NL Central for awhile and then their lousy ass pitching caught up to them.

Yep.  We are 1/6 of the way into the season.  Come July/August if Cinci is on top of the division I will be surprised.  Seems that every year, some team unexpectedly jumps out to a strong start only to fade by mid season.

It seems to me like that team has been the Reds, every year for the last 4 or 6. In that respect I am not at all surprised what they've done so far. Just as I was not at all surprised, each year when they plummeted after June. Maybe if Jose Rijo were still in his heyday.

During tonight's broadcast, I noticed Dave (or was it Brett?) make an out-of-context reference to the food in Cincy's ballpark being good. Was that a make-up comment?

It was Dave, and according to previous reports, similar statements were actually made during the original broadcast in question, so no make-up comments should have been necessary.

On a marginally related matter, I'm actually beginning to like Dave Raymond on the air. He is picking up Milo's inadequacies pretty well, and when he calls the game, he describes a good picture. I especially noticed it last night on a ground ball that Milo simply described as "knocked down". I had no idea where, how, or in what manner, but Dave quickly jumped in and described a hard hit ground ball to Ensberg's left (or maybe right?) that he had to do a good job to keep in front of him. He described it in other ways too, but I thought he painted a pretty good picture.
