Backe gone after two innings

he was allowed to hit for himself in the top of the 3rd.  Jon Miller is perplexed.  Guessing he was injured.  Buckholz replacing him.

Hate to say it, but you gotta wonder what's causing sprained elbows in a 28 year old.

Grab bottle, bend elbow, drink.  Damn!  I sprained my elbow.  I guess a 150 ounce bottle of beer IS just too big.

It's not uncommon for an athlete to injure some other part of his body while trying to protect or compensate for an existing injury.

Yeah I hope this just doesn't linger for awhile. With Carlos having surgery it looks like Zeke might be up in no time. Hopefully Hirsh or Patton

Astros .com has Nieve listed as the probable, but they also note:

"The Astros have several options for Sunday, and Nieve is one. Brandon Backe exited his start early with a sprained right elbow Thursday, but he threw only 30 pitches, and he could, if healthy, start Sunday. If not, the Astros could call up a pitcher from the Minor Leagues. A third option is Nieve, the designated "long reliever" who can also serve as a spot starter. So basically it could be anyone.

"I've never been hurt there before," Backe said. "I asked some guys who had Tommy John surgery if that's how it starts and they said it was similar. But only the doctor can tell me for sure."

I wouldn't read too much into that.  Let the doctors and the trainers sort it out.  Maybe he is screwed.  Maybe not.  I do know that people can get freaked out when friends and sufferers of whatever ailment begin to assist in diagnosing their medical conditions.

True enough, but it's hard not to be worried by his reaction after throwing the pitch and the grimace on his face as he came off the field after the third out.

  I'm pretty pissed that he wasn't pulled when the trainer went to the mound.  Everyone in the organization knows Backe's personality.  If there was a decent chance that he could do more damage by continuing then get him out of there right then.  Waiting till the middle of the inning so as not to rush Buchholz is no excuse.  I realy hope this isn't serious.

Seriously, Wandy and Buchholz have looked okay, hope Nieve and Zeke can hold the fort for a few weeks. Days off on the 20th and 27th can only help.
