Because of tonight's rainout...
« on: April 12, 2006, 10:28:35 pm »
I looked into potential makeup dates for the missed game, assuming they get two in tomorrow. The Astros and Giants both have a day off on May 8. It looks like a good option because the Astros play in Denver on May 7 and LA on May 9, so travel problems might be minimized. The Giants will be returning home from a series in Philly to begin a 6-game homestand.

I'm not sure what other considerations need to be made for a return trip, but my money's on May 8 for a makeup game in SF.

Does this mean Buchholz gets skipped entirely?

According to Yahoo, he's scheduled to pitch the nightcap tomorrow.

My guess is that will change, and the only reason it hasn't yet is because there's no official word on pitchers for tomorrow beyond what they had before the rainout. Garner likes to keep as many pitchers on schedule as possible. That would probably mean Backe and Oswalt go tomorrow and Bucholz moves to Sunday at Arizona, which would have been his second start.

The rain has delayed Barry Bonds' pursuit of Babe Ruth on the all-time home run list. Bonds hasn't homered yet this season, the longest the slugger has gone into a season when healthy without a homer since 1998.

Pitching update from the link above: Morris will now pitch Thursday's first game against Brandon Backe if the weather cooperates. Matt Cain will face Houston's Roy Oswalt in the late game. Buchholz will get skipped.

It's been rather nice here for the past couple hours (Granted I'm about 30 miles south of the city, but I'm pissed nonetheless).

...the first time in 45 years there have been back-to-back rainouts in San Francisco. ...

Alou hopes Bonds will play at least one of the game Thursday, probably the night game so the field has longer to dry out.

"I'd like him to play even if the field isn't 100 percent," Alou said.

Felipe had too much wine waiting for the sky to clear.

Well, when they come here in May, there's a decent chance of a snow storm to cancel the game.  Take your pick I guess.

I noticed that too, but I found  this VERY amusing:

Quote:

The rainout didn't stop Jeff Pearlman from passing out fliers in front of the ballpark for his upcoming book, "Love Me, Hate Me: Barry Bonds and the Making of an Antihero." The book, the second in as many months about the slugger, is due for release April 18.

...

Pearlman called his timing "horrible" for the release of his book, which isn't expected to generate the same attention as "Game of Shadows." When Pearlman tried to hand out one flier Wednesday, a man said, "We don't want that! Throw it away."

Incredible. So they're not playing because the manager got drunk and they have poor drainage at at&t Park. Sweet.

5th rainout in Pac Bell/SBC/AT&T's history. I am charmed.

Looks likely.  Tomorrow will be Backe in the early game and Roy in the late game.  In Arizona, Pettitte goes Friday, Wandy Saturday and Nieve, announced tonight, will to be starting Sunday.  Astros.com has T. Buc penciled in for Sunday. We'll see.

Footer is reporting that Buckholz will start Sunday at Arizona. No mention of Nieve whatsoever.

Also mentioned in the tonight's "recap" here.
