I'd be shocked if Clemens ends up retiring.

I think the news part is that some other team complained about Clemens pitching in the mini-camp and the Astros were extra careful about obtaining permission for Clemens to pitch to their minor leaguers.  It's not like being near the Astros is going to make him part of the team.  If so, some of the guys on the Dominican Republic team, who'll be sharing the Astros ST facilities for a week, could fit perfectly in the Astros lineup.

Surely no one would notice if Pujols, Tejada, and Guerrero suddenly showed up in Astros pinstripes.

So long as he's pitching to our minor leaguers, he's not pitching to the Yankees'.  That's good news to my ears.

I can't read too much into this.  I see this as Clemens doing exactly what Clemens needs to do in his best interest.  If this could in any way be construed as an indication of his leanings, or tampering by the Astros, the Red Sox, Yankees, and Rangers would be throwing a conniption.  I've been looking in all the obvious places and am finding no conniptions.

Doesn't he have a personal services contract with the astros?

But is knowing that any reason for yankees or redsox fans not throwing a conniption? It's what they do.

First pitch, Koby takes pops over the left field wall. Next time Koby steps in, pops buzzes him.

At least Roger didn't throw a bat at Koby.

Which confuses me a bit. Roger seems to have a different set of standards but I think this isn't one of them.

He's not currently under a contract to play for any team. When does not being under contract as a player equal retirement? At the end of the season? When he makes an official announcement? Clears waivers?

There is some official paperwork that has to be signed, I think.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

The most amusing thing about that article is this:

"I don't know what will happen down the road," he said. "I might be sitting around in May, June, July and all of a sudden, I'm looking at three or four teams that came down to talk to me already and gave me their pitch."

3 or 4 teams? Who are you kidding, Roger?

Just another media op for Team Bastard to try and kick the price up a little. I'd be surprised if he comes even close to the $20M he's looking for. I'd resign him in mid May (for half a season's work by the time he's in game shape) for 10M tops.

" He is a throwback to the old days, when a player's most honored badges were mud and blood"

He's listed as a free agent. He filed the forms for free agency in Nov.  I looked at the CBA to see whether there is paperwork to be officially retired.  Didnt find any, but I did see that there is a list of officially retired.
