Per Kenny R over at FoxSports
« on: February 04, 2006, 11:43:37 am »
The Astros want to trade for another starting pitcher even if Clemens returns, as expected, on May 1. Right-hander Fernando Nieve or Jason Hirsh could win a spot, but the Astros also could trade a lesser young pitcher ? perhaps right-hander Taylor Buchholz ? for a back-of-the-rotation veteran. Buchholz, 24, seems to have recovered from surgery on his biceps and shoulder last off-season. He threw free and easy at the Astros' mini-camp ...

Any ideas on who might qualify as a back-of-the-rotation veteran?

This is pure cock and balls.  If, according to the article, Hirsh AND Nieve could win a spot AND Buchholz is fully recovered from his surgeries, why on earth would the astros even consider trading any young pitcher of any value for some crappy old brett tomko kind of guy?

Because at least you'd know what you are getting.  If the guy you're getting is a .500 pitcher or slightly better for his career, then at least you know what you're getting.  While all three have fairly high ceilings, you don't know what you're going to get from Hirsh, Nieve or Bucholtz in the near term...and the same can be said for Astacio and Wandy.

I was thinking someone like Wells or Arroyo in Boston, both of which are available.  Maybe Bautista from ARZ.

Not wanting to go with two rookie starting pitchers sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Adding another dependable pitcher, at least as insurance for Clemens not returning, sounds like a very good idea. They just gotta avoid a lemon.

When talking about a back-rotation pitcher, that's often easier said than done.

Heck, that's what a back-of-the-rotation pitcher is -- at least a 50/50 chance of being a lemon.

It's often consistency of performance, and not performance itself, that separates the great from the good, and the good from the not-so-good.
