"Since 1985, professional football has risen nine points in popularity (from 24% to 33%), while baseball has dropped the same amount (23% to 14%). The next largest change in popularity is in auto racing, which has risen six points since 1985, from five to 11 percent."

NHL leads NBA.

No real surprises there except the NBA numbers.  Baseball is a thinking sport that requires a certain patience and discipline to watch.  That pretty much eliminates a lot of potential "fans".

I am surprised at the decline of NBA popularity, but it began to suck when it started going hip-hop.

Not me.  After the boom in popularity in the 80's and early 90's, the NBA has gone down the toilet.  Part of it is the drastic decline in the quality of the game being played, and a huge part of it is the fact that the NBA has alienated itself from it's bread and butter fanbase in favor of promoting the "gangsta" crowd.  They are trying to get back on the straight and narrow, what with the crackdown on hoodlumism and making the players where a coat and tie on the instead of baggy pants and a hat with the price tag hanging on it, cocked sideways on their head.  But the NBA has nothing to blame but it's own arrogance for its meteoric decline.

Although MLB has yet to go the way of the NBA, I'm afraid that MLB's own arrogance may ultimately bring it down too, if it hasn't begun to do so already.

Sadly, I don't know how they could make it more popular.  Who ever made the point about Baseball requiring more discipline etc.. may be on to something.  Neither football nor basketball have SABRmetrics, or something comparable, or the debate surrounding Bill James wannabes (Does that make anyone else think of the Ellen Jamesians or is it just me?)  and "old school" fans.    

And I couldn't agree more on the quality of basketball.  It really became obvious when I was talking about the Rockets and Spurs with someone and they said they'd prefer to see awe inspiring athletic feats than quality basketball.  I couldn't disagree more but I realized his preference was probably shared by the majority of fans these days.  I still don't know why they can't do both?

And NASCAR is not a sport, it's a friggin' spectacle.  I'll be the first to admit I simply don't get NASCAR what so ever.

Well, I could poll 1,000 in white males in North Carolina, and NASCAR wouldn't make the top 10 "sports".  They'd tell me NASCAR isn't a sport, it's a way of life.  Right behind church.

Yeah but, using some sloppy math, there are like 200 NFL games in a season and something like 2,400 MLB games.  I understand the point you are making, but to compare attendance is difficult to guage because of vast difference in number of games per season.  If NFL teams had 150+ games per season would they still draw 60,000 per game?  Probably not.

Upon re-reading I realize that I made Pravatas point.  Jack Daniels has been keeping me company the past hour or so.  Oh well.... it is Friday..

The point is that 74 million people were interested enough to leave their house, find parking, buy a ticket and go to a baseball game.  That's the most ever.

Yes sir, I suppose so.  Jack on ice, TZ on the screen, and my kid watching a Tom & Jerry DVD.  While it has nothing to do with this topic, the cartoon with Ty in Tampa's avatar just played.  Hilarious.  Bought the complete box set of Tom & Jerry off of ebay a few months back, what a great investment. Emergency baby sitter at the push of a button, and the classic T&J cartoons are brilliant (unedited versions, I was not aware that many disappeared due to being politically incorrect).

I used some Amazon gift certificates I got for Christmas to purchase a couple of DVD box sets -- Cosmos(1980), the PBS series; and the entire 26-episode (1964) first season of Jonny Quest.  (The only season, actually... anything that came after was a weak imitation.)

My kids immediately grabbed both, and I haven't been able to watch either yet.

That's pretty great.

Back to the poll, it took me awhile, but I finally figured out that the percentage of gen echo and hispanics who liked football (which were the low side of the population groups who liked football) was actually greater than the percentage of gen echo and hispanics who liked baseball (which were the high side of the population who liked baseball).

I don't know what I'm supposed to do with that information, be disheartened?  Be concerned about the ignorance of the populace?  I guess on the positive side, if there were greater numbers prefering baseball, ticket prices might go up.

it is a photo of Mark and me during a HS game i coached in 1997. it is my favorite coaching photo; for me, it epitomizes the coach-player relationship i wanted to have, and it is special to me that the player in the photo is my son.

that is the "significance" of it, but i did not know that avatars were supposed to have significance. if so, i do not grasp most of them.

anyone who can read Fredia's posts and not think immediately of a question mark, however, is not paying attention and definitely not reading carefully. i think she should adopt your creation. super job.
