Do you presume from Garner's statements about not expecting the young guys to struggle as much next year to mean that we ain't getting another bat?  I know it's slim pickins on free agents.

I interpret Mclane's and Purpura's comments as meaning they're trying like hell to get one.

I agree but I also think they are saying that if they can't get a bat and if they have to rely on the young guys, the young guys won't be so shell shocked at the beginning of the season. We can expect them to improve from last year.

I presume nothing from Garner's statements other than that he's not going to say anything negative about the current makeup of the roster.  That's what managers are supposed to do.

Although I don't know this for sure, of course, I don't get the impression that Garner is a huge player in player acquisition. I take that comment to mean nothing about whether or not the Astros will acquire anyone. Take it at face value: the young guys who contributed last year will be back in 2006 and should improve.

Agreed.  The young guys proved to themselves and us that they might have a real future with the stros.  Their added confidence might mean the offence won't be as abysmal as last spring even if Bagwell dosen't return.
