Mapping MLB Fans

I read about this in the newspaper today and thought it was pretty interesting:

The premise: "The CommonCensus Map Project is redrawing the map of the United States based on your voting, to reveal the boundaries people themselves feel, as opposed to the state and county boundaries drawn by politicians."

Note that the Braves fans spread out in green, somewhat like mold.

Why is Arkansas Cardinal country?  Somebody's got to do something about that.  They should be Astros fans, or at least STrangers fans...

It's been Cardinal Country for generations. My family goes way back in Arkansas and they were all Cardinal fans. My Grandfather moved the family to Houston where they became Houston Buff (Cardinal affiliate) fans until 1962.

It was a big deal in the family in '62 when the Colt .45s started up, and loyalty shifted to the Houston franchise. Still, growing up, the Cardinals were always mentioned more favorably amongst the adults than other teams.

Pretty much everything west of the Mississippi and south of the Mason-Dixon line was Cardinal country at one time. It's one thing that makes the building rivalry between the Cardinals and the Astros interesting.

Correct.  The Cardinals were always a big draw in Houston for many years, regardless of how good they were at the time.

Guess I made a short sighted comment-yeah, St. Looie used to be the frontier of baseball.  Almost as soon as I posted that, about one of my grandmother's ancient cousins (Houston native) that has a ton of stories about going to Buffs games, is a huge Cardinals and Astro fan (listens on the radio now because he's gone blind).  With that timeline, even Houston falls under his jurisdiction...

How many times did Cardinals players make a curtain call during the NLCS?  Or White Sox players during the WS, for that matter?

The Astros don't do that much.

The Arkansas Travelers, AA team now of the Angels, was a Cardinal affillate for almost fifty years.

It should be interesting to see if the New Orleans area continues to show Astros interest since the Astros moved their AAA to Round Rock.
