MLB to Make the Call on the Roof: Official
« on: October 24, 2005, 07:00:45 pm »
The link.

This is complete bullshit. They set rules about the roof when the stadium forst opened so why do they give a fuck about it now when they have not before in 5 years and plenty of  playoff series.

Next, they'll make the teams play AL rules.

Money quote from the Commish:

Quote:

"MLB controls the postseason, certainly the World Series," commissioner Bud Selig said. "We really haven't gotten heavily involved in the debate.

"Our position is that we want teams to do what they do during the regular season. If, say, 80 degrees is the cutoff during the regular season, that's what it should be in the postseason.

"I don't want it to become a farce. Let's say it's 72 degrees, why wouldn't the roof be open? Why do you have a retractable roof in the first place?," Selig said.

Now, the fact that Selig is a maroon won't come as a shock to anybody here.  But I can see at least two things wrong with these statements.

First, the roof was closed more or less all year.  (Does anyone know the date of the last roof-open game this season?)  There were a few very nice nights down the stretch, but it stayed shut.  So I think the precedent for leaving the lid on is clear.

And second of all, I'm not the sharpest crayon in the box but unless I'm missing something there's a VERY good reason to have a retractable roof, even if you normally play with it shut.  It's called GRASS.  History has shown that grass inside domes doesn't work well.  Build a dome and you're committing to the abomination that is artificial turf.  Who the hell wants to see turf return to the NL?!

Anyway, I think this whole thing is overblown but it is hard to pass up a chance to point out how full of shit Selig is when the opportunity comes along (as it so often does).

Since when is Selig worried about farces?

how about explaining a decision to play a game in October in conditions that would be a rainout in May.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

Agreed.  How many of those did we see this year?  This is total BS.

I am shocked someone from the front office of the Cardinals complained about this.  Didn't a Yankees game in the ALDS get rained out this year?

The commissioner should worry more about his umpires doing their jobs properly than about whether the roof is open.

Game 4 was rained out on Saturday and played on Sunday.  Game 5 in Anaheim was played in wet conditions like last night, but obviously not as cold.  They had to squeeze it in to make the TV sked for the ALCS.

Forecast says a low of 45 tomorrow night.  What's the low threshold for closing the roof?

From MLB's guidance on the movement of retractable roofs:

Quote:

The decision as to whether a game begins with the roof open or closed rests solely with the home club.

D'oh!  I knew that.  I had to take a recertification exam at 8:00 that Saturday morning so the whole weekend was a blur of studying (pre-) and beer + baseball (post-).

Those were the first in a long time though, right?

I think everyone else has made the point better than me anyhoo... what happened in the regular season, Mr. Selig, was the Astros decided whether they wanted it open or not.

I am furious.  I hate to seem like a whiner, but why can't we decide for our fucking selves.  The CWS are no shining gem of the MLB, but I have never heard of anything like this.  Where is our leverage?

let's hope for like 20 seconds of rain tommorrow...or at least an f-ing cloud.

Furthermore, this is not... repeat *NOT*... the first time a retractable roof has been in play for a World Series.  That honor goes to Bank One Ballpark in Arizona.  Four games were played there and if memory serves me correctly, for at least the last two games, the roof was closed.  The way Kim was allowing the Yanks to take him yard for three games in New York, the D'Backs decided enough was enough and closed the roof. (Note: I don't remember game one and two of that WS, but I do remember the D'Backs dispatching both the Cardinals and Braves and then game 6 and 7 with the damn thing closed).  Curt Schilling also lead the majors in homeruns allowed that season, however it was Schill who *requested* that they closee the roof for his game 6 versus the Yankees.  He blantantly said that he wanted it closed for the express purpose of keeping the jet stream to a minimum and giving his team and himself a fighting chance at keeping the Yankees in the yard.

Fox was all over it during game six, praising Schill for his savy and veteran slickness on that one.  Now all of a sudden it's wrong and the MLB and yes FOX want to be major hypocrits about it all.

Where is the media to call them *both* out on it to avoid the real embarassment of farceitude?  The reason the Yanks didn't complain and whine to the media and the MLB about it was because they took the loss with class (yes, I said the Yankees had class in losing that series... shoot me!).  And the Cardinals never once complained about the roof in Arizona either.  But let the Houston fans take their priviledge as loud, boisterous, crazy, winning starved fanatics and it is now so freaking wrong?  Classless whining by what should be better than that organizations if this is coming from a bitter Co-ard organization.

Truly classless.  And Selig is going to have egg on his face as soon as the real farce of allowing it in 2001 and now changing it is pronounced after he makes a fool of himself again.

According to this:  The Link, the league dictated that the roof should be CLOSED during the Blue Jays series.

The easy answer here is for Drayton to politely tell Selig to go fuck himself and piss up a rope while he's at it.  "I'm closing the roof, Bud.  What do you want to do about it?"

I can see this going down much like the scene in Ghostbusters where the EPA demands they turn off their protection grid, for some reason.

But with an explosion of boos on Mr. Pecker errrr Selig, instead of... you know... the end of the world.

FWIW, respondants to ESPN's online poll are falling 3 to 1 in favour of the Astros on this topic.

Yes, but I'm afraid Drayton is already leaning to allowing it to be  open :

Quote:

Houston owner Drayton McLane was a bit more diplomatic.

"It's a combination of MLB and us. It's our roof," he said. "We'll wait to see what the weather is tomorrow."

Right now the forecast has it in the 60's at first pitch, dropping down into the 50's as the game progresses. Living in Houston has thinned my blood considerably, I might have to pull out the thermals.

Having been to a few college classics in February, MMPUS has no heater, and the temperature is usually uniform with that of the outdoors. However, with a packed house, a closed roof ought to improve that considerably.

That's a good question.

If it comes down to this, the Astros should simply say, "Uh, sorry guys, we wanted to appease you and all, but we just tried to open the roof and it physically won't open.  It's stuck or something and it'll be next week before we can get the roof repair company out to take a look at it."

WTF would MLB do?  Not play the game?  Relocate it to the Dome?  Fine Drayton?  Go ahead.
Lighten up, Francis.

Not that I've seen.  You've got to admit though, it's freaking beautiful outside right now.  If weather is MLBs criteria, there's no way they're closing it.  It doesn't get better than this in Houston.

It will get dramatically colder once the sun goes down.  People going to the game need to know one way or the other so that they can dress accordingly.  Once again, MLB fucks the fans.

The BUZZ stated this morning that there is a No-Fly zone in effect during the game over MMP.  My guess is if they decide to keep the roof open, it's to releive everone's ears as our stadium is the "loudest".  I suppose the reporters in their boxes won't be able to hear themselves think when doing a live show.  And should you show up poorly dressed, you can get a nice pullover for the low, low price of $100+.

Get a bunch of people outside spraying water from fire hydrants over the top to simulate a rainstorm.  A logistical challenge to be sure, but desperate times call for drastic measures.
