for the next off day
« on: October 21, 2005, 07:15:38 pm »
has anyone ever tried to put together an all-time Astros 25 man roster? i think it might be fun, but i'll need a media guide/all time roster to do it.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

Do you want two at each position, plus five starters, plus four relievers?

a regular 25 man roster with all the considerations that go into one.

Hmmm ... I like that approach better than just picking the two best at each position and the five best starters and four best relievers.

Means you have to think about bench players as bench players and utility men as utility men.

Is it cheating if I just take the 2005 team as is, given what they've accomplished?

It's been year ago, but I had an all-time Astros roster during my APBA days, using a 5 year average of the best seasons for each player.

From memory:

C Ashby, Bateman, (much debate here)
1B Bagwell, Davis
2B Biggio, Doran, (I consider little Joe a Red)
SS Thon, Metzger, now AE?
3B Rader, Caminiti, now Morgan?
LF Berkman, Cruz
CF Cedeno, Puhl
RF Wynn, Hidalgo

edit: pitching is a tough call

don't pick an all-Star team necessarily. pick a 25 man roster to play a season.

Just for the hell of it, I'd take this team to war anyday.

C Ashby, Ausmus
1B Bagwell, Davis
2B Biggio, Doran
SS Thon, Metzger or Everett
3B Caminiti, Rader
LF Berkman, Cruz
CF Cedeno
RF Wynn, Puhl

SP Richard
SP Niekro
SP Oswalt
SP Hampton
SP Ryan

RP Lidge
RP Wagner
RP Larry Anderson
RP Sambito
RP Ken Forsch (long)

Good to see you left Joe Morgan off the roster.  Biggio's starting, and I don't think Joe would take well to that.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

what if Phil had not vetoed the trade in '79?

1980 rotation:

Richard
J. Niekro
Ryan
P. Niekro

holy shit

Ashby would have his work cut out for him!

That rotation would cause plenty of slumps in the coming days, for sure.

I've looked but I can't find a decent lefty specialist from the bullpen in the all-time roster.  Am I missing someone?  You think Andy or JD would be willing to go to the pen?  Hampton is my lefty in the rotation.  I feel a little guilty leaving Ryan off my roster.

Rotation:
Richard
Scott
Oswalt
Hampton
Clemens

Bully:
D. Smith
Lidge
JD
Pettitte
Larry Andersen
J. Neikro for spot starts and long relief
60% of the time... it works everytime.

What about Randy Johnson?  I know it was short lived, but the man will be in the hall of fame one day.

My morbid mind keeps flashing back to when I put together the all-time rosters for all teams.

The Yankees outfield with Ruth, DiMaggio and Mantle was  scary.

Would it cheating to throw Wagner in as your left handed specialist? Don't want him as my closer, and as long as budget's not a consideration...

CATCHER
?Brad Ausmus
?Johnny Edwards
(Edwards was a good defensive catcher who was killed offensively by the Dome.  Left-handed hitter, he flew out to the RF warning track 25-30 times a season in there.  In MMPUS, those are in the 10th row.)

FIRST BASE
?Jeff Bagwell
?Bob Watson
(Watson also played LF, remember; and, early on, catcher.)

SECOND BASE
?Craig Biggio
?Billy Doran

THIRD BASE
?Morgan Ensberg
?Denis Menke
(Menke was a solid defender and better-than-average offensive player in the low-offense days, and very versatile -- he played all the infield positions well, and could bat out of the top of the order, or drive in runs from the 5 spot.)

SHORTSTOP
?Dickie Thon (pre-Mike Torrez)
?Bill Spiers (Had to give him a position... he originally came up as a SS with the Brewers... I also thought of Sonny Jackson, going waaaay back.)

OUTFIELD
?Lance Berkman (Best all-around hitter the franchise has ever had)
?Cesar Cede?o
?Jimmy Wynn, The Toy Cannon
?Jose Cruz, Sr.
?Tossup between Rusty Staub and Terry Puhl.  Staub was a better pure hitter, but Puhl played in Houston a lot longer, and more recently

STARTING PITCHERS
?Larry Dierker
?J.R. Richard
?Don Wilson
?Roy Oswalt
?Mike Cuellar (for a token lefty, a very good one)

BULLPEN
?Danny "D-Day" Darwin
?X-Man (Xavier Hernandez)
?Se?or Smoke (Aurelio Lopez, R.I.P.)

(Dual Closers)
?Fred Gladding (Fat Freddie)
?Dave Smith

This sure isn't an all-time best team, but it'd be fun to watch.

Jim R., it was fun doing this, thanks.  And I'll probably change it 7-8 more times as I think of other guys I left off.
