I found my ticket
« on: October 21, 2005, 04:26:18 pm »
Not a game ticket, although my left nut remains on offer for one of them, my betting slip.

Every year for at least the last decade I make a bet on the Astros to win the World Series whenever I visit Vegas close to the beginning of the baseball season. Usually the betting slip disintegrates in my wallet or is lost for year until found during a cleaning binge.

Well, this time I have it. I got 25:1 odds on March 19th, and I made my normal $50 bet.

It's worth $1,250 if the Astros win, but I might be tempted to frame it and hang it on the wall next to other Astro artifacts instead.

It would be a nice decision to have to make.

So if they win, you will have made $750 net? Not bad. Good thing you didn't start this trend 44 years ago.

Too bad you didn't make that same bet in May or June.  What would it be?  100:1? A meelion to one? You could have looked your bookie right in the eye and said a'la Lloyd Christmas "So you're telling me there's a chance?"

I will have made $1,200 net. In typical Vegas fashion it is not 25  to one, it is 25  for one. Kind of like the hard way bets on a craps table.

Yea, I bet I could have gotten 100:1 on May 19 instead of March 19th. Of course, had I gone to Vegas in May, I would not have placed an additional bet, I'm a little ashamed to say.

Anyway, 25:1 is still pretty damn good. Maybe they can stamp the thing "paid" and I can still frame it....that would be sweet:

"2005 World Series
Astros 25:1
To Win"

With a big freaking "PAID" stamped on it.

We shall see.

You're gonna win that bet, Tex!

Ya know, I like to get skin in the game, so I made some future wagers back in mid-July when the Astros got hot. I couldn't pick a horse if you handed me a photo finish, but this blind squirrel finally found a nut!

I bet $50 on the Astros to win the NL pennant at 8-1.

I bet $25 on an Astros/White Sox World Series at 35-1.

WOO FOOKIN HOO! I can now almost afford the worst seat in the house for a single World Series game.

I think he took the $50 per year for the last decade when calculating your net profit.  In that case, your net is actually only $700.  But if you take in the time value of money and what that $50 per year could have been doing at 6% a year you would have $659.  So you end up making $41 over the past ten years  if the Astros win.  Anything over 7.25% and you've lost money.  The DJIA has averaged over 25% increase per year since 1995, so making more than 7.25% isn't pie in the sky.

Did that sufficiently kill your buzz?

Spoken like a true gambler.

I think Jason's point is that you have to subtract the last 10 years $50 from your total as well... hence the $750.

I got 40:1.  I only bet $10, as it was a "sure, place a bet on the Astros at Caesar's Palace, that'd be cool to have" kind of bet.  So, my ticket would net me $400 should circumstances in the next week and a half render the ticket not worthless, less whatever $10 at 6% for 5 months would be.  (math is hard)
