Now I love them even more...
« on: October 18, 2005, 03:47:23 am »
I didn't think I could care any more about this crazy, unlikely, beautifully flawed team than I already did.

There is no imaginable scenario that could be any sweeter than advancing to their first Fall Classic in franchise history after sucking down a sphincter-puckering, ball-swallowing, heart-rending bad beat like that-there motherfucker.

It doesn't mean shit if it isn't hard, and that's as hard as it gets. Rocky always has to get his grill planted in the canvas at least once. Then he has to get up, smear the blood across his face, and finish the fucking job.

I was 13 years old in 1980, and I bled orange for those guys like only a kid really can. I was the center of the universe, and I didn't really believe they could lose. At the end of Game 5, the Baseball Gods looked down at me and said, "Guess what, kid? Life ain't fair, and in some things, you don't call the shots."

In 1986, I was starting my sophomore year in college, and I'd learned the lesson well. I knew the universe and the fickle, uncaring Baseball Gods didn't owe me or "my team" a goddamned thing. But I figured this time, even the gods couldn't hit Mike Scott's splitter once they took it to Game 7. "Sorry kid, we're going to take this one from you, too. We might give you another taste in a couple decades."

Now I'm 38, and you know what I wish? I just wish my aunt, who held season tickets in the second row behind home plate since the Dome opened, who sat right in front of the scouts every game, knew them all by name, knew how to talk baseball with them, and cared enough about the game and the team to teach her nephew what she'd learned from four decades with her ass planted in those seats -- I wish she could have seen this fucking team play baseball.

Win or lose, hanging slider or strike three swinging, I wish she could have seen this. She would have loved this fucking team, just as much as I do.

-- Heya to all you old timers who remember me from back in the day.

here's one:

home crowd. 43,000 delirious fans. brad lidge, best pitcher in baseball, fans albert fucking pujols on three straight pitches. fireworks explode, astros pile on lidge, crowd explodes and piles likewise. astros win the fucking pennant. win the fuckign pennant at home.

that's a better scenario than the heartbreak we just suffered, and the uncertainty, the anxiety, the fuckign chance that we're going to lose in st louis. a much better scenario.

ask anyone. ask any fan there, who paid probably 300 dollars to celebrate. who had their hearts torn out. ask any player. ask andy pettitte, who called this the worst loss of his career. goddamn, ask brandon backe who was yelling like a little kid in a dugout full of his heroes, almost falling over the railing waiting to pile. champagne was being pulled out of the ice.

i saw this shit after Coach-Pitch Miceli cost us the pennant last year, people trying to blow it off like, hey, we had a good year, the losses just make us stronger. we'll win the next time.

don't be afraid to say it. this sucked. say it with me: this fucking sucked.

That's the worst:  It's like waiting for Xmas.

Fuck yeah.  One of the best teams the Astros have ever had.  Maybe not in talent but these fuckers will reach up and sock you in the dick when you put them on their ass.  And hell they aren't even on their ass yet.  The Jakes gotta win two.

Didn't happen that way.  Pretending that it did don't help matters.  Probably not good for the ol' psyche either.

We are not going to go quietly.  Haven't people learned never to count this team out?  The Jakes got a miracle comeback in the 9th just to keep their season alive.  They think they're entitled to the pennant.  We know otherwise.  You have to earn that pennant.  There is no destiny.  There is only what you can seize.

Roy-O on the mound in 6.  Roger Clemens in 7 if the Jakes get another stay of execution.  It's the Cards with the uphill battle.

I want this story to have a happy ending.  But I'm going to read it to the end.  And when it's over, come what may,  I'll thank the BBGs for such wonderful experiences as watching the 'Stros play ball like it's meant to be played--as a team.
