Who is in the line-up tonight?
« on: October 17, 2005, 04:09:27 pm »
Is Burke playing CF instead of Taveras?
If Taveras is playing CF, is Burke in LF or is Lamb at 1B?

Since I am not sure if it is announced officially, was wondering what you all would want to do?

Me personally, I would go with Taveras and Burke, trying to get my best defensive team in there for Andy knowing no matter who I put in to bat, it will be a struggle against Carpenter.

Lamb's 6 for 18 against Carpenter.  Lamb at first, Taveras in center.  Burke has hit Carpenter better than Taveras, though, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Burke. The Burke in centerfield experiment makes me nervous, though, and I don't actively dislike Burke.

I'd bet it's the same starting lineup of the last two games, but Taveras will probably be used around the 7th or 8th, especially if it's a close game, as I expect it to be.
phew. for a minute there, I lost myself

Taveras - CF
Clank - 1B
Burke - Bench
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

I'd leave burke in the lineup.  Last night he had good contact on a couple of at bats but nothing to show for it.  Willy has a hard time making even good contact.  Our offense is very thin as Ensberg is still in a funk in being able to drive in runs.  Yes, he got a sac fly yesterday, but I'm talking about a base hit with RISP. If men are in scoring position, who would you rather have, Willy or Burke?  Burke.  We need what little offense we can get.  Our pitching can carry the burden of defense.  I liked how Garner used Willy the past two games off the bench for pinch running and defense for the end game when we had the lead.

Yes, but Willy could BE the RISP.  If he gets on the bases, he can score far more easily than could Burke.  Willy's job isn't to get ribs, it's to be the rib.  His speed, his ability to somehow get on base even on dribblers, and his superios defensive skills in Center lead me to believe that he'll get the start.  Burke did have a great AB against Termite, though, and so I wouldn't be shocked to see him start.  But he could still hit as a PH if needed.

I have faith in Gar.  His instincts have proven right time and again.

Burke's pretty fast though, too, and has had his baserunning moments.  All I can remember was Saturday watching Cardinals go from first to 3d on every hit to center field. Burke's go a good enough arm for left, hitting the cutoff man from center was an adventure.

Sadly, he has had a hard time even getting on base which of course is why he was demoted to 2nd in the lineup and being out of the starting lineup.  Burke isn't by any means slow on the base paths, just not as fast as Willy.  So if Burke's on second and someone hits a single, most likely he'll get home with no problem.  Willy though can get home from first with a good jump, but again, he has to be able to get on base better than what he has shown.

That's what I mean that our pitching can carry the burden of Burke being in center.

But the bats must knock him in though, which hasn't been happening very often in this series.

It's like a catch-22
