Any Astros fans in Cleveland, Ohio--not Cleveland Texas
« on: October 05, 2005, 04:56:21 pm »
I'm a texas expat who has been stuck in the land of the DH for the past two years and all the Indians fans around here do not feel like talking baseball for some reason. Any other Astros fans in the area?

You're about 25 years too late for me. Good luck though.

Hey, is Lake Erie that beautiful brown color this time of year?  I was a Clevelander up until a few years ago.  Lived there most of my life (well, slightly to the West--Lorain).  It's not a bad town--they love their sports there, even if it is the DH-plagued Tribe and the Clowns.  The Jake's a great ballpark--I took in many a game there.

On a completely unrelated note, you should check out Lakeview Cemetery--it's beautiful, secluded, and there's plenty of famous folk buried there (including President Garfield and John D. Rockefeller).

I grew up about an hour east of Cleveland in a small town just north of Youngstown.  Was a big Indians/Browns/Cavs fan, though baseball is the only sport that I follow anymore.  I try to keep up with the Tribe--having a team in each league isn't such a bad thing--but didn't do a good job this year.

I moved from Ohio to South Carolina in 1994 (first year for The Jake) and then to Houston in 1999.  I didn't get to see a game at the new park until 2002 or so (I'd have to look it up) but when I did it was an almost spiritual experience.

Anyhoo, I think you did this backwards.  People are supposed to move from Ohio to Texas, not the other way around.  You must be some sort of nonconformist.

Edited to add:  If you haven't already, pick up a copy of  The Curse of Rocky Colavito.  It's a great crash course on 60s, 70s, and 80s Indians history.

Edited again:  Oh, and with respect to the subject of your message... after I moved to Houston I kept hearing the news, etc. talking about Cleveland and thought, "Why the hell are they mentioning Cleveland all the way down here in Texas?"  It took me a few months to catch on.

PTNF

I live in cleveland heights and drive by Lakeview Cemetery all the time--it is beautiful and interesting (the wade chapel is something special). I have three little kids who love the "castle" where garfield (prez not cat--but i wish it was the cat) is buried.

cleveland,OH sucks much less than I thought it would. but it does suck--it taxes the shit out of you for the pleasure of living a cold and economically struggling icebox. I do Like the people here a lot though--the ones who don't love cleveland  have left and there's a lot of protective pride. The locals bitch but they won't go. I understand. I really want to get back to the vast polluted swamp infested with republicans, insects, and hurricanes called Houston.

Its not much of a baseball town though. They love the browns fiercely win or loose. But most of the city didn't pay attention to the team at all until the last few weeks of the season--just in time for the choke.

Ohio state football (horns baby!) and the browns get a lot of love but they think unless the team has a bloated payroll the owner isn't trying. FYI, Steinbrenner is from cleveland and wanted to buy the indians but the owner at the time wouldnt sell to him (local rumour).

Understand. we came up this way for my wife to get her phd--and when she's done we are heading back down--probably next year. When we we're telling people in Houston that we were moving to cleveland they all assumed cleveland texas--I got the feeling that some of them didnt know that cleveland ohio existed.

though i am a little bit of a nonconformist for the sure pleasure of being a contrarian we came up here mostly because we're idiots. its just too freaking cold way too long for my taste, and grey--we get a lot of overcast day during the long winter. but I got to say that the summer and fall here are wonderful.

Good to see some folks with a Cleveland connection here. I grew up in University Heights on the east side and moved to Houston with my family in 1979. Saw all my Tribe/Brownies games in old, decrepit, decaying Cleveland Municipal Dungeon, which now rests at the bottom of Lake Erie, and rightfully so. People love to romanticize the old ballparks but there's no way around it - that place was a complete shithole. 80,000 seats, 75% of them obstructed view. Getting tickets was never a problem, though.

Cleveland was not a happy place at all back then. The city had defaulted on its bonds, the economy was completely in the crapper, people were leaving in droves, and Dennis Kucinich was mayor. It was literally a national laughingstock. Moving to Houston was a definite step up for us, although Cleveland seems to have recovered somewhat since then.

As I remember it, people were much more passionate about the Browns than the Indians. At least the Browns gave you the occasional glimmer of hope whereas you knew the Indians were headed straight for the cellar in any given year. I still like the Tribe enough to jump on their bandwagon when they are playing well. Never could get into the new Browns though.

You're right about the weather - spring and summer are great there, but winter gets old real fast. Say what you will about Houston's summers, but no one ever had to shovel heat and humidity.

Heh, I got my undergrad degree at tOSU.  If you think they are Buckeye-nuts in Cleveland, take a trip down I71 to Columbus sometime.  They are absolutely crazy.

That being said, the UT-OSU game was a great one.  I rooted hard for the Bucks, but I'm capable of tipping my (Astros) cap to opponents who deserve it.  Wish it'd turned out differently, but it was a terrific football game.

Is your wife at Case?  I actually spent a lot of time in Cleveland Heights many years ago.
