It ends here
« on: May 24, 2005, 09:22:06 pm »
Maybe half an hour ago, after hearing JD say something like this is the worst start ever by an Astros team through this many games, I experienced a strange calm.

Call it a hunch or psychosis, but I am being led to predict that May 24 will represent a turning point for the club, for the better, by some measure.

So I'm just getting this posted as a matter of public record. Thanks for your time.

I had NO confidence that Lidge would get Burnitz out.  Not too often you can say that about him.

Good teams find ways to win.

Bad teams find ways to lose.

There is zero doubt which category holds the 2005 Houston Astros.

Agreed.  Brad had a different look in his eyes tonight.  Deer in the headlights or something.  It looked like he was really pressing hard.  It is tough to watch an inning like that.

I fucking HATE to watch cub fan celebrate.

Oh man, we don't just find WAYS to lose, we find new and EXCITING ways to lose.

It sounds terrible and it made me feel BAD when it happened, but up 2-0 in the 7th, I just knew we'd lose.  Just knew it.

And you know the WORST part?

One of my business partners is a goddamned Cubs fan.  So we have this running bet.  Astros win the series, he buys lunch, Cubs win, I buy lunch.  A sweep means the winner gets to also decide WHERE lunch is.

I already owe that punk ass bitch lunch.  If he gets to pick where too, I'm going to lose it.

Now it's personal.

GET SOME FUCKING RUNS, YOU LOSERS.

Good question.  I am accustomed to the "lights out" Lidge.  Three up, three down, thanks for coming.  Anything less is a disappointment.  The guy is human and unless there is an injury issue, he'll be back in good form soon enough (I hope).  I feel bad for Clemens and I'm sure Lidge feels even worse about it.  That was an awfully tight zone the umpire had.  If Lidge gets a few of those calls, he gets out of that inning.  It was just tough to watch.

Speaking of expectations, I do expect that when there is a runner on 3rd and no outs, we occasionally should get that runner across.  Big leaguers should be able to drive in runners in scoring position.  Not every runner, not every situation... but how about occasionally?

The thing that bugs me the most is that this team isn't the worst team in baseball on paper.  On paper it's a bad team, but not the worst team in baseball.

I know Purp is all about being patient, but how can he watch this team night in and night out without thinking, "holy shit I need to do SOMETHING"?

I agree, but technically they have until the end of Wednesday's game to manage something positive and preserve the prediction. For instance, it could later be said "AFTER hitting rock bottom on May 24, the Astros won 24 of their next 28," or some such.

No, that's EXACTLY what's going on.  But with good reason.  You see, at Purpura's part time job at Whataburger, there's big talk that he might make assistant manager, a big job with big responsibilities for a big man.

This isn't to be taken lightly.  That Whataburger only promotes from within and Purpura has been praying for this since he was 16.

Also, not to be overlooked is the fact that Purpura has a new girlfriend.  Well...let's be fair, HE calls HER his girlfriend, but she hasn't exactly returned the favor.  This creates a lot of stress, as you can imagine.

So, cut the guy some slack, eh?  He has so many things going on in his life that he can't really be expected to worry about the Houston Astros ballclub right now.  Frankly, it's not his job.

And on a more serious note, and please, please PLEASE understand this (and this goes for anyone else who has also suggested Purpura isn't "thinking about this")...

You are a fucking moron.  Do you understand?  Fucking.  Moron.  If you honestly think that Purpura hasn't lost sleep for weeks trying to figure out how to fix the ballclub without hurting it further, you are a fucking moron.  If you think Purpura isn't aware of every situation out there that might help the club win more games, you are a fucking moron.  And most importantly, if you think, for a SECOND, that you've done more thinking and put more consideration into the Houston Astros Ballclub than Purpura, you are most certainly a fucking moron.

Stop suggesting that Astros management is somehow sitting in their office with a ball-and-paddle, watching cartoons and that they are completely oblivious to what is going on.  It's insulting to have to read this shit.

That's the problem; most or all of the suggestions I've seen made do more long term hurt than good. And its not like the other teams are just lining up to give us stuff.

You'd think in all the "Clemens to NYY" BS that people are expecting to get back ARod, Jeter, and Timo, with NYY still picking up their salaries.

Excellent.  Now I know what to do with myself in the evenings.

Since soccer season finished; the Rox got knocked out of the playoffs; Bill Maher finished; Deadwood finished; South Park and Daily Show were limited to re-runs; and the Astros decided to go for the Guiness World Record for the largest shit-burger ever made...I've been lost.

Let's see, since May 24...

Astros are 8-5, including 4-2 on the road, for two consecutive road series wins, the only such series wins of the season.

Baby steps with 104 games remaining.

Oh, and you're welcome.

That clip from here on out makes us 87-75, just good enough for 3rd place, 17 games behind the Cards.

Of course, if we win 2/3rds of our games from here, we'd finish with 93 wins and have a shot at the wild card....

Of course, our lineup last night began with Burke, Bruntlett, and Vizcaino batting third.

I've been taking more of a Larry Dierker attitude lately. Like I mentioned in a preview last year, Dierker said (or maybe he was quoting someone) that you win 60, you lose 60, and it's what you do with the other 42 that counts.

Last year we were 60-60 on August 20. I don't know if we'll even see .500 again this year, but there's a long fucking time to go.

With the wildcard system, it seems like the season doesn't even really start until after the All-Star Break.

I understand this but I still don't know what to expect as far as what direction the Grocer and Co. want to take this team for the rest for the year (try to make a wild card run?).  Will we continue to go with the young OF every day (Tavares, Burke/Self, Lane) or go after veteran bats?   Are we buyers or sellers?

It's still a little early to decide, I know

From Jayson Stark's column TONIGHT:

This team was 15-30 on May 24, 14 games behind the Cardinals and 11? out in what was then a complete wild-card free-for-all. But since that date, the Astros are 74-43. And how many teams in either league have a better record since then?

How about none?

But May 24 isn't just a random date on the calendar for this team. After that date, Andy Pettitte moved back into the rotation and stayed healthy. The Astros finally put together a set rotation, by establishing Wandy Rodriguez as an acceptable fifth starter. And May 24 happened to be the last day under the Mendoza Line for Lance Berkman, as he gradually found some decent Rustoleum on the way back from offseason ACL surgery.

That's not just weird or scary, that's fucking CREEPY.  Kevin, stay away from my family.

Blue Horseshoe loves Anacott Steel.

The media have been clamoring for more wisdom with regards to the postseason, but I have had no clear vision like the May 24 thing. The only thing I have to go on is an adage I use with regards to the Astros in October which has never failed. It goes like this:

Show me where you think the Astros are strongest, and I'll show you where the trouble is going to start come playoff time.

So all I can say is beware of giddiness as it relates to pitching.

Also being everybody's chic pick is not good. See the 2005 Arizona Cardinals.
