Astros @ Orioles, August 11, 2019
« on: August 11, 2019, 11:49:03 am »
Hopefully it's a nice crisp Sunday afternoon game.  Otherwise I don't know what we're gonna talk about.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

T1:

Springer pops out F2 behind the plate
Altuve swings through a meatball...tries to bunt a ball in the dirt...swings at another in the dirt and grounds out softly 6-3
Brantley strikes out swinging at a slider in the dirt

No score

Julia reporting that Brocamonte, who is usually prepared with his glove on during Correa's home run yesterday, didn't have his glove so he whipped off his hat and was ready to make a play, then watched in shock as the ball sailed over his head and the bullpen.

T2:

Bregman...full count...walks
Alvarez flairs a single to CF, Bregman to 2B
Correa homers to LCF, Bregman scores, Alvarez scores
Diaz...0-2...1-2...strikes out swinging
Chirinos...0-2...flies out F9
Reddick...2-0...takes one at the ankles for strike one...lines one up the middle, Villar dives into LCF, stabs it and throws a bullet to 1B to rob poor Josh

But the Astros do a little damage...lead 3-1

Jesus, this HPU has gone off the rails in the last inning and change. Called a pitch 6 inches outside a strike on Bregman earlier then just totally whiffed on a curveball that got plenty of zone on the bottom of the inside corner.

Santander strikes out looking
Severino doubles down the LF line
Peterson...2-2...takes strike three to fill the count...of course triples over Springe's head, Severino scores
Alberto...infield in...flies out F7 in foul territory...Brantley with a running catch, but in no position to make a trhow as Peterson scores easily
Sisco...full count...strikes out looking.

But the O's take a 4-3 lead.

3 runs in 6 innings = 4.50 ERA.  Not that far off.

Dammit.

0-2 to 3-2 to rbi single.

Now another single puts runners on the corners.

Not a good swing, but at least he managed to punch in the runner from 3B.  There have been times when he didn't.

Armstrong in for the O's

Reddick singles to LF
Springer...0-2...doubles to LF, Reddick to 3B
Altuve flails at a 3-1 pitch in the dirt and grounds out 6-3 as Reddick scores

That's all for Armstrong, Fry in

Brantley...0-2...takes a meatball down the center for strike three
Bregman...3-0...walks...Fry had no interest in throwing anything close
Alvarez...man he just missed one...1-2...2-2...strikes out swinging at a slider in the dirt

Yesterday I was driving during the game, and Sparks and Ford were talking about how the Orioles have about 4 DHs playing positions currently. Lots of hitting, not much fielding.

I'd say that was a pretty good example of it.

As far as I know he always does.  That doesn't mean he's fast or that he had a good read on that ball into LF last week.

Solution, make games seven innings. High end pitchers go seven innings for complete games which is long long they’re allowed now

Actually his 7th.  Just because he's a banjo hitting 9-hole hitter, a strikeout looking for a place to happen, doesn't mean he doesn't punish 2-strike hanging breaking balls belt high right down the center of the plate.

I don't know if that one was, but I think Blum said that the three before it all were.

My dad always taught me "don't throw changeups to bad hitters". Especially not several times in a row so they can time it.

Ruiz was hitting so bad he was sent to the minors a few weeks ago.  Last night was he first game since being called back up.  Two HRs, including the walk off monster shot today.

Sparks also believes the HBP was retaliation and complimented Osuna for taking up for Bregman.

It was an offspeed pitch for sure.  He kept throwing them to the 9-hole hitter, and he eventually caught up to one.

I thought it was a lame HBP if intentional and was mildly surprised Correa didn't get the lead runner at third on the groundout. Of course I have no understanding of clubhouse dynamics and don't know if Bregman was in a position to take a throw.

Had to be a scouting report thing. Terrible location.

I'm assuming the same thing.  That was the pitch he wanted to throw, just left it up.

I thought it was a lame HBP if intentional and was mildly surprised Correa didn't get the lead runner at third on the groundout. Of course I have no understanding of clubhouse dynamics and don't know if Bregman was in a position to take a throw.

Did not see it, but Sparks agreed the baserunning was bad. With a two run lead, Correa probably opted for the easy out.

You get the out.  The runner doesn't mean anything, unless they get another runner.  Take the easier out and keep the tying run off base.

From the look from LF, there seemed to be a legit question of whether he got his arm on the plate before he was tagged.

And it was up and over the middle of the plate.  It was a batting practice fastball.

Yep. The HBP was the tying run. That is what I told Sparks when he was celebrating protection.

Yeah I know, I just thought it was actually a pretty blatant mistake on the part of the runner.

And I agree about the play at the plate. OTOH, does NY not automatically "review" scoring plays in the 9th inning?

and if you get the lead runner on an easy play, the fly ball does not score a run.

That still leaves the pitch to Ruiz.

Not that I know of.  I'm not aware of any automatic review or a rule that says you can't challenge in the 9th.

That still leaves the pitch to Ruiz.

After all of the other stuff, it's still the Astros closer against the O's #9 hitter with 2 outs. Osuna has to close that deal.

Exactly.  You had a 2-run lead and your closer in to face the bottom half of the worst lineup in the league.  You have to make pitches.

Not that I know of.  I'm not aware of any automatic review.

Maybe I'm thinking of the NFL.

Anyway I'm sure they'd've challenged if they thought they had it. Hinch should've had one to spare and either way he could have asked the crew chief to initiate a review.

Live he looked out, and on replay it was awfully close.  I certainly think it was worth a challenge.

Of course not. On the other hand, nobody pays me millions of dollars a year to that job, or even jobs that I'm really good at.

To top the afternoon off, I just had one of the most bizarre conversations I've ever had. I dropped my car off earlier today to repair a slow leak in one of the tires. As usual, I forgot to give them the key for the lug nuts, so they called to ask where that was. I told them where it is in the trunk, and they went off to look for it. A few minutes later they called back to tell me that they couldn't find the key, and, by the way, the lug wrench and the jack aren't there either. They're right: those things are not there. WTF? I have absolutely no idea when those could have gone missing, or how. Fortunately, I have a backup key for the lug nuts.

I lost the lug key once. It was not fun getting the keyed lug off.

Every time the tire guy hands the lug key beck to me I wonder why I ever got that 'feature'.

Read on At Bat they threw 6 changeups out of 7 pitches to Ruiz. Chirinos took the blame for that. Osuna blamed himself for location.

Changeup is a great pitch, but it has to be a change from something else. If that's all the hitter sees from you, it's just a shitty fastball. I don't know how many times Ruiz has faced Osuna, but he wasn't fooled. And the location...well, it was just bad. All in all a bad at bat for Osuna.  Shame it came when it did.

I'm reminded of Doug Jones and his super slow change up that he would counter with a mid-80s fast ball.
