Tucker In August
« on: August 02, 2019, 09:38:21 am »
He played 1B last night and did fine, just as Álvarez did when I saw him play 1B in RR. Tucker had one difficult chance moving to his right for a backhand stop and long overhand throw leading the pitcher to the bag. He made that play with no problem.

As I posted last night, he had a major power outage in July. He hit only three homers during the month, and none of them were in RR. Same story last night. He hit two home run distance shots, but they were well foul.

By the way, Humberto Castellanos looked great. Nine up, nine down in 6-7-8 when strikes were badly needed. The game was nearly four hours, and I was stupid tired before it ended.

W/ that slow start Preston's brother is hitting .366 for Aug (15 for 41) w/ 5 HR & 15 RBI in the last 10 games!  W/ 32 HR he needs five steals to have a 30/30 year.

Remember him cutting up during a ST interview, joining Fisher w/ a "stare"?

They have been on a west road trip. Discount the homers.

Typically, but the 2 he hit yesterday were not ABQ cheapies.  They would have been out anywhere.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

Remember this HC introduction of Tucker as he was making his debut last year?

Quote
....Within the Astros' organization, Tucker is renowned for his makeup — an uber-poised, almost blase demeanor with which he's accepted his position and prestige.

"He's not going to panic," manager A.J. Hinch said. "His heart rate is as high as it's going to get today, his major league debut, and that's not very high. He's calm, his demeanor is good, he can control himself."

Could this demeanor also be described as "passive and tentative at the plate........as if he would rather be anywhere else...."?

Kinda frustrating, seeing three K's (in three AB) from Marisnick who is replacing a "struggling" Reddick!
Why wait!

What would separate your ridiculous love affair with Tucker from the common mongoloid in the Chronicle comment section would he detailing the corresponding roster move(s) to get Ticker on the team now.

No argument there.  I know there is much I don't know; that's one reason I am here.

Does it have to do w/ the team giving up some player control if they don't wait until Sept?  How much?  Games like tonight can make that a hard sell at times.

In August? Hell no. Tucker’s being in AAA had nothing to do with tonight.

Answer Homer’s question. What roster moves would they make to bring him up now? Correa and Diaz are on the IL.

The starting SS and the utility infielder are on the IL.

AJ has been committed to giving the regulars scheduled off days.

Straw plays 1 IF position and the outfield,  and he fits neatly into the bottom of the lineup when he plays.

Jake is Verlander's personal centerfielder; I think he has started in each of JVs games.

Chirinos had 4 hits last night.   Springer had 2; the rest of the team was 0 for 25.  They drew 2 walks.  4 baserunners not named Chirinos.

Point fingers at the botton of the lineup all you want, but the meat of the order is in a collective slump. 7 guys went 0 for 25.

That sort of calm, rational logic may be lost on him. Snuff loves Tucker.

On top of the fact he's done nothing at the big league level to prove he's going to help at all.

Saying that bringing him up could fix hitting issues with proven big league commodities is crazy at best.

....Answer Homer’s question. What roster moves would they make to bring him up now? Correa and Diaz are on the IL.
Answer his question.

Your question helped me understand the problem was roster-related, not player control.  Don't have enough info, time, or interest to suggest roster moves - it's above my pay grade.  Just frustrated.  It's easy to complain....

Much obliged.

Great points.  Forgot that Marisnick was JV's preference.  (Does Cole have a choice, other than the catcher?)

Agree that no matter what the bottom 1/3 did, JV was doomed by two gopher balls combined w/ the top 6 in the order not named Brantley being shut down.  It did not help that desperate base running killed a potential rally and ended the game w/ two outs at 3B in the 8th & 9th.

Did not mean to suggest that having Tucker replace Marisnick would have turned the game - not at all likely.  As much as Jack is a pleasure to watch tracking flies in the OF, it is hard to watch him waste ABs by chasing sliders, etc. out of the zone.

We were spoiled during the 1st half of the year w/ a healthy Correa (fond memories) and Reddick.  If memory serves, even Chirinos was hitting.

Those titles have been there for 17 years, and someone is now complaining about them.  Everybody gotta be somewhere, I guess.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Jim, you have made it clear that you think Tucker lacks the makeup to be an elite MLB player (I agree) but don’t you think he still has potential to be a a better than average player or maybe even a guy who could make an All-Star team? I’ll hang up and listen.

Shoot, I do not know. I do not see him every day. He has AAA stats, although his year this year, 30-30 nothwithstanding, has been less impressive than last year. He was given LF in 2018, but he did not hit. He did not hit in ST. He has been inconsistent this year. Those who see him every day question his makeup. I have no first hand knowledge.

Who knows what he will do? I expect Reddick to be traded, and it would be nice if Tucker moved into that spot and hit. I do not know what kind of player he will be. He has the talent.

Who would trade for Reddick? If he doesn't start hitting, or come out of the spring on the same hot streak he had this year, I expect him to be DFA next season.

I doubt seriously they would DFA him. I have no idea who would trade for him, but he brings much more than a high BA.
LAD traded for Tyler White.

The Astros might have to pay down some salary to make it happen, but someone will take him.

If the Astros are willing to pick up some of the salary, I could see him being easily traded.

Tyler wasn’t making $13mm next year. That said, I agree that there are likely parties interested in Reddick’s services, particularly if the FO is willing to eat some his cost.

Luhnow told 790 this morning that Tucker will join the team in Milwaukee on 9/2

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

So, if RR makes playoffs, Tucker will be gone.

As of today .264/32/94

Saw the video of Tucker’s #34. He is beginning to worry me in a Jason Lane kind of way. I think MLB pitchers will find the holes in that swing.

His swing is long and stiff. He did not hit .270. I hope he surprises me in MLB, but I am not expecting him to be a star. It would be nice if he is.

Right. And Jason Lane hit about *3*70.

He is in the lineup tonight vs the Ms

Encouraged by the flyball to advance the runner in Milwaukee.  Last season that would have been a grounder into the shift.   Likely same result with the runner,  but encouraging nonetheless.

No,  I'm not above grasping at straws.

Other than Appel, he is the most underwhelming Astros prospect in recent years, but I guess there is still time.

Tucker’s numbers are a lot better than Whitley’s and he hasn’t been suspended for drugs.

?

One is a hitter; one is a pitcher
Whitley was not suspended this year for anything
Both of their years were underwhelming, except for Tucker’s power in an offense-heavy PCL.

Not sure of the point.

It's hard to see how that long languid swing can work against big league pitching.

Sir, a fax has come in from Mr. Tucker... It appears to be a drawing a big middle finger, with your name written under it.

Brantley's walkoff will probably get more attention, but the Astros lose in 9 innings or 12 innings without Tucker.  Nice night for him.

Absolutely. Huge hit for the team and for him.

Brantley looks fixed. Now I wish someone would fix Alvarez.
