AA relief pitcher.
Been in the minors about 4 plus years it appears. Don’t know what his outlook is. Could just be a move for minor league pitching depth but his AA numbers don’t look too bad. The walks are a little high though.

Me too Jim. Kemp’s a solid ball player. Astros will be able to trade him to someone for some decent value. Good luck to you Tony!

White was DFA'd on July 19.
He was traded to LA before the 7 day period expired that would have made him a FA.

I think I got that right.

DFA gives them 10(?) days to either trade the player, release the player, or pass through waivers and send to the minors.

Well, and this (White deal) gives me hope that Kemp definitely has enough value to bring something decent back in return.  I'm not sure what's wrong with the AA pitcher that we acquired, but it isn't his numbers.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Do you mean Straw as the everyday SS in that life after Correa? Correa's laser accurate canon arm though!

Correa is a plus defender at SS. Straw starting everyday at SS to me is not an option. Filling in as a spot start while Correa has been out has helped. From what I've seen, Straw seems to have adequate range, decent glove, but not yet comfortable with throws to 1st.

It's a sharp drop in defense going from Correa to Straw.

I could see Straw as a "light" life after Marisnick 4th outfielder. "Light" being less pop & not quite as good a defender despite Straw's elite speed. Straw may be able to hit for more avg than Jake.

I won't argue that Kemp is the better player but thought they might send  Straw down so he could get regular playing time (more time at SS, etc.) and be ready for a call back up when rosters expanded.  I wouldn't think he would get a lot of playing time on the club the rest of the way barring unfortunate circumstances (yes, I knocked on wood).

To this layman's eye, the most painful aspect of Straw's SS play thus far is his use of the overhand lob to 2nd base on 6-4-3 opportunities.

Yea, I thought Straw being sent down was the logical choice. He's played well enough to stay but has options.

If the reports are correct and a DFA is coming for Kemp (I hoping for a starting pitcher trade package)...I absolutely don't want to see Kemp go. Great player and tremendous clubhouse guy. Although, Kemp deserves to be an everyday player. He's not going to get that in Houston.

I love Kemp, but tap the brakes on everyday player. The Astros used him well last year, but the roster is too crowded now. Of course sending Straw down was “logical,” but it seems Luhnow/Hinch see Straw differently than you do.

Concur.  Outfielders don't spend time working on short side armed throws across their bodies.  I thought he did a great job there all things considered.

Totally agree. SS is the most difficult infield position, and they just threw him in there. I think he has done amazingly well.

Didn't mean to be harsh.  Double play opportunities are valuable, and getting the ball to 2nd quicker is something I'm sure he'll work on if he sticks at SS.

Or it could be that, you know, good teams usually trade for good players on bad teams and bad teams trade for prospects from good teams.

Doubt the Astros would accept a player dump for White, in "appreciation" for Alvarez.

I dont get it.  Im sure there is a reason for DFA'ing Kemp instead of sending Straw down for a month, but on the surface it doesn't make much sense, to me.

With Correa, Diaz and Bregman, all vastly superior at SS than Straw, its not like he is gonna get much of, if any PT there.  Seems like a month in RR getting reps at SS and at bats, would have been more useful for Straw and they could have kept Kemp around.

Either way, Straw down for a month or DFAing Kemp, neither is likely to have any impact on the playoff race.  So whats the point in jettisoning Kemp right now?  Guess we will find out in the next ~7 days.

Doubt the Astros would accept a player dump for White, in "appreciation" for Alvarez.
Not sure how you got that from what I said. Maybe I wasn't clear enough. The most likely reason the Astros and Dodgers haven't made deals tongether since 2016 is that they have both been contending since that time. Contenders don't usually deal with other contenders. Not because the Dodgers are "scared" of making deals with the Astros, which is ridiculous

Maybe they know that Kemp will be moved for a SP in the next week and don't want to send Straw down and not be able to bring him back for 10 days

white is on a journey I bet he never expected to make. good for him...just not to good if  he goes against the Astros

Totally agree.  While being grateful for the chance to play, we can expect him to try hard to make the 'Stros regret trading him someday.

Good thought. Also, it is clear to me the brain trust thinks Straw is better than Kemp to have on the 25.

Had not read your post, tho the logic makes sense to not help a contender.  Hoping the Alvarez trade may well be to the Dodgers what the Bagwell trade has become to the Red Sox.

I’m a bit surprised that the Dodgers have a spot for him on their 25 man roster. I don’t watch them often, but I was under the impression that their roster was loaded.

White’s going to really kick himself for his offseason “training regimen” when he’s swimming in his t-shirt at the Marmont

The Dodgers just recently lost Chris Taylor to a broken forearm.

Chris Correa?

The Dodgers have the combination of money and depth and front office brainpower that would make dealing a Scrubb for what Tyler White has in his noodle conceivable. They also can expect to be clashing with the Astros periodically throughout the next several years--hopefully.

Totally agree. SS is the most difficult infield position, and they just threw him in there. I think he has done amazingly well.

They did not just "throw [Straw] out there."
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

Yes, they started working on it some last year and he did play one game (4 innings) at SS last year in AAA.  So he probably also worked on it in the off season, but he only had 25 total games at SS in AAA before he started playing in MLB.  He was still learning the position when he was put at SS in the Majors.

He might have known how to doggie paddle but he was still thrown in the deep end.

I just did admittedly imperfect research and found only one game at SS in 2018. I know how infrequently he played SS at RR in 2019. No doubt he took a million ground balls and listened to instruction about playing SS, but for him to be starting at SS for the Astros and holding his own in a pennant race is an amazing feat.

They might have had the idea in 2018, but part of one game is less than minuscule for such a demanding position. He was thrown in to see if he could handle it.

Thanks for your detailed knowledge, Duman. I was not misinformed after all.

Straw's been amazing given his lack of game practice. Obviously a great athlete. And I agree; Duman rocks.

I was the emergency catcher on JV my freshman year, I had never caught before in the game. Sure I'd caught bullpens and I had put on all the armor and run around at practice a couple times. But one game our catcher got hurt in like the 4th inning, the other catcher had been called up to varsity a few days before. So coach tells me I'm going in. I nearly shit myself, I hated every second of that nightmarish game. If I learned one thing about myself and this game of baseball, it's that I am not a catcher. I can't imagine his nerves getting on a Major League field and playing a position that he's not really played, for a team with World Series expectations. He's done an incredible job

Analysis of Scrubb by Seattle site hoping to dump Gordon to LA
« Reply #81 on: July 26, 2019, 09:13:40 am »
Ran across this review of Scrubb on a Seattle site that was posing three options to dump Gordon.

Quote
(2 Jul 19) Option 2: Seattle sends Gordon to the Dodgers along with $10 million
Potential trade – Scrubb, an 8th round pick of the Dodgers in 2016, is a big-bodied reliever that throws some gas. Armed with a low-to-mid 90’s fastball and a wipeout breaking ball, Scrubb is a pretty good bet to contribute at the major league level in 2020. He’s currently striking out more than a batter per inning at AA Tusla and should get the bump to AAA here soon. He’s currently running a 2.31 ERA and 1.179 WHIP.

Scrubb would fit well into future plans for the Mariners as the bullpen is an obvious position of need moving forward. With guys like Sam Delaplane, Art Warren, Wyatt Mills and others working their way through the system, Scrubb would represent another high-floor arm to add to that promising cavalcade.

Regarding the control issues, it is easy to forget the Astros' ability to help pitchers hone their talents (James, Cole, etc.)

Scrubb's stats combined with the organization's track record of development have me very excited to see what he can do, and how quickly he does it.
