Good article in The Athletic yesterday, with quotes from Luhnow, about the complexities of bringing Alvarez up.

This article makes it pretty clear Luhnow's in no hurry, and that he expects some measure of versatility.

He has to clear a roster spot.

I think there's currently only 38 players on the 40 man. It seems that the logjam in the DH/LF spots are the bigger issue (plus the development of his defense).

Kemp and White are the issue. Both are out of options, and one must leave the 25 man to make room for him, barring injury.

Is there a service time angle also here? The article didn't seem to address that.

Right, and they do not want to lose either with nothing in return.

Quote
“If he continues to produce at this level, there’s going to be no reason for him not to show us what he can do here,” Luhnow said. “His approach and the way he goes about it, this guy’s 22 years old and he’s destroying Triple-A pitching right now. We need to resolve exactly how he’s going to profile defensively, but he’s not that far away.”

There's no need to rush,  certainly not at the expense of losing Kemp or White with nothing in return.

But you can tell Luhnow is looking forward to getting Alvarez up in front of MLB pitching.

I hope Tucker goes on an absolute tear for a while and then helps them acquire a starter.

For those who know, I know he has been a slow starter all along, but when does the hitting usually kick in?

He has to be frustrated still being in AAA.

The idea of him being a slow starter is something of a misnomer.  He starts slow at a new level not just every season.  This is something else.  I don't recall him being this bad this long at any point in his career.

For all the deserved focus on Tyler White,  Kemp has quietly gotten off to a terrible start.  0 for 3 tonight.  Hitting .143 for the season, on base .250.

On the Sunday pre-game interview Luhnow mentioned the upcoming schedule may dictate another bullpen arm. And he mentioned the problem being the Kemp/White issues. He appeared he didn't want to take a chance on losing either Kemp/White.  Makes me think Alvarez isn't even top-of-mind at this point barring injury.

He ought to be actively trying to lose White.

I’m sure he probably is and hopefully Tyler starting to look a little better at the plate is helping things. While I’d much rather trade White than Kemp, Tony probably has much more trade value because I’m sure he has a higher up side. Much talk on radio today about how the Giants are working the phones looking for outfield help. Makes me wonder if they’ve called Luhnow.

I don’t think either one gets you more than a lower level minor league prospect, but one of them for sure has to go barring an injury to free up that pitching spot. Would not be stunned to see both moved. Straw is ready and Alvarez is close.

Hope so but batting .156 and striking out lots.

His lone hit last night was a bunt single, and he Ked in a key AB with men on. Alvarez has a single and Ked twice. I worked my second game with Capps, and it was a dreary game which dragged. The Express had no life or energy and ran the bases like LLers.

Maybe they've discussed this on the broadcasts, but I was just scanning Baseball-Reference and saw that Stassi, Kemp and Diaz have 2, 2 and 7 RBIs respectively. White has 0.

I thought Diaz, as Marwin's "replacement", would be getting more ABs.  Moving around the diamond and giving some guys days off. Maybe that will come later when it gets hot.

2 XBH.  If Kemp was putting up White's numbers nobody would complain; Kemp's batting 9th and is a positive on the bases.

That’s my thinking. Diaz will get more time as the season grinds on. Also, Marwin was a guy you could plug in all over and let a regular DH. They were hoping White could be an everyday DH and not have to use guys on their “day off”.  That’s looking like it may come to an end as well.

Alvarez update from last night, he was 4 for 5 with his 11th homer and had 2 doubles and 3 RBI’s. The home run was a go-ahead two run blast in the 7th.

I wonder if Luhnow would consider moving Kemp, White and Marisnick for pitching. then bring up Alvarez and Straw.

James needs to be in RR for sure, but Devo/Rondon certainly seem replaceable these days, sadly.  They could sure use another high leverage guy for the late innings, and for when Pressly/Osuna are unavailable.  Would love to have Peacock back in the pen also, but I like him for a more versatile role there.

So basically, Luhnow should go get a #3 starter and a back-end reliever, and jettison White for Alvarez.  Somebody let him know.

He has, but he's not been all that good outside of low leverage appearances.  If you add Peacock and a guy and push him down the pecking order he's a great guy to have.  Same with Harris, who has been great so far.

Tony Watson from SF, ideally.

Rondon pitches the 7th in close games. He has been good. The last outing he was not.

Bumgarner from SF works for me.

Does anyone think that any combo of White/Kemp/Marisnick is going to fetch a starter?

If you want a starter aren't you going to have to give up something valuable from the farm?  Or an actual proven every day player on the current 25 man roster (i e. Reddick; not endorsing this)?

I'm guessing their plan for Whitley directly impacts both their price point for another pitcher and their plans for Peacock.

Rondon pitches the 7th in close games. He has been good. The last outing he was not.
He's given up runs in 3 of the 9 close games he's pitched in, in the 7th and 8th. He's also allowed both of his inherited runners to score.  I'm not sure I consider that notably good.

I'm not saying they need to kick him to the curb tomorrow or anything, but that I'd like to see someone else pitching those appearances as the season wears on.  Was supposed to be James but that didn't exactly work out.

Does anyone think that any combo of White/Kemp/Marisnick is going to fetch a starter?

If you want a starter aren't you going to have to give up something valuable from the farm?  Or an actual proven every day player on the current 25 man roster (i e. Reddick; not endorsing this)?

Tucker and Bukauskas gets everybody's attention.

I'm guessing their plan for Whitley directly impacts both their price point for another pitcher and their plans for Peacock.

Whitley is not pitching particularly well in RR. Martin is.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

I send them to Toronto tonight for Stroman who has two years of control left. Not sure the Blue Jays would bite though without another piece in the deal.

Has anyone heard any reports offering an explanation of Whitley's struggles?   It doesn't surprise me that he's hit a bump in the road, but I'd love to hear firsthand reports.

I think Tucker now has 5, and 4 of them came recently. His BA, though, is well under .200.

Over the last week, Tucker is 6 for 19 (.316) with a double and 3 home runs, raising his batting average 44 points in the process. Small sample size and all, but hopefully something has clicked.

Maybe they could sign Kimbrel to be Keuchel's opener.

As it stands now, Keuchel has outsmarted himself. He could be making an $18MM annual salary pitching for a contending team and backed by top hitters and defenders - a dream job for an MLB pitcher.
I wonder how he is viewed in the current clubhouse. Would Luhnow have him back even at a bargain price?

He certainly left millions on the table not accepting the deals he was supposed to have been offered.

Keuchel always seemed to get along well with teammates. No reason for them to not warmly welcome a previous Cy Young, left-handed innings eater to help the club! As far as Luhnow, everyone likes a bargain right?

I know he's been throwing simulated games every 5 days, but after not facing MLB hitters, could he jump straight into the rotation? Effectively?

Third starter, Peacock to the pen to replace James?

Makes sense. Thanks.

The Athletic has an article today about how shallow the Astros pen is. Good but shallow. This would be an elegant way to solve that.

He's gonna need probably close to a month to get ready to face MLB hitters if/when he signs for a team

Only offers I've seen were 1 & 2 year deals, both from the Astros. Other teams like Philly & Atlanta were interested, but no offers were reported.

There are lots of reasons this would never happen, but it'd be hilarious if he played for the Skeeters to keep himself fresh until someone signs him.

At this point it is looking like Keuchel will probably not sign until June when the draft pick compensation goes away. Unless he’s going to sign for peanuts, if you are the Twins, Phillies, Braves or Padres you might as well wait it out now.

After going 4-5 with 3 RBI in Game 1, Alvarez is 2-2 with a 2-run HR in Game 2 of the doubleheader.  Now sitting at .390 with 12 HR and 35 RBI, 1.401 OPS, in 23 games

RR has scored 21 runs in 9 innings today (7 inning first game)

My argument would be, "What's the rush?"

White, Kemp, Diaz & Guerriel have all struggled to this point in the season, but a month is all we have played.  No reason to think any of them can't turn it around.

I realize Kemp & Diaz are more valuable because of their ability to play multiple positions but White posted a line of:  .276/.354/.533 in 66 games (210 ABs) last season.  It is only one game, but we are leading the division, and done so even though it has been against a fairly tough schedule (as others have posted).  So I'm thinking there is no reason to change anything, yet.  Let Alvarez get more PT in the OF and let White get a few more ABs to turn things around.  If he's still shitting the bed in 3 or 4 weeks then I'll agree with you.

One of the things I love about the Astros organization is they tend to play the long game with players.  Sometimes you'll get burned doing this but overall I think it pays dividends as players know they will be backed (to a certain point) and are given fair shots to succeed or fail.

While I can’t wait to see Alavarez I tend to agree with this. When he’s called up, I want him in the lineup almost daily. If he’s only going to get occasional at bat’s, leave him in RR for now.

How did this work out with Tucker last year? They need to know if Alvarez can hit in the bigs. White has been in the org for years. They know who he is.

It's a good point, wanting to know what you have, but I do think this year is different than last season.  We needed an OF last year, and the Astros were hoping Tucker would fill that void.  This year, we already have that OF (i.e. Brantley) so it kind of opens the door to the Astros just needing a hitter no matter the position.  That greatly broadens the amount of possibilies in terms of a trade IMO.  Because of this I think there is still time to get Alvarez some more seasoning, and in the meantime, hope that either Kemp or White can turn their season around along with their trade value.  Like I said, the good news is that if neither turn it around by early June, you call up Alvarez at that time and give him 5-7 weeks  to show what he can do.  If no dice, you should easily be able to find another hitter the last week or two before the deadline.

I’m with you. I’d much rather see Straw and I think his performance when he was up last year was good enough to get the call. They are working him as an infielder lately however so they may not want to interrupt that program.

I'd rather see Fisher.  He supposedly worked really hard in the offseason to revamp his swing, performed well in the spring and has performed well so far at AAA.

Unrelated and perhaps interesting only to me.  Tucker (Jan 97) is only 5 months older than Alvarez (June 97).  Who in turn is only 3 months older than Whitley (Sept 97).

Jacksonian cleared this up for me. He says he starts slow when he changes levels, but this slow start is somewhat aberrational.

Right.  His monthly splits don’t show a slow start.  He’s never spent a month this bad.  Not even when changing levels.  This isn’t slow. This is putrid which is why I was presuming your comment about there being something not physical getting in his way was a significant source of his problems.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Astros' going out and getting a guy like Brantley at a position that Tucker likely viewed as "his" put him in a funk. He's just got to realize that at some point this season there will probably be an injury or something that opens a spot, and it's his job to be ready if that happens.

My totally-based-on-nothing opinion is that he loves that long swing that he has and the Astros don't think it's going to work in the big leagues. Would be interested to see if he has made any changes there.

He didn’t have a bad month. He had a bad 11 days that just happened to be at the start of the season so it was magnified. He’s actually been quite good far longer in this early season (17 days) than bad.

They'd have to add Alvarez to the 40 man and still have to do something with White (or Kemp).

Would Luhnow move Kemp for less than a top prospect? I think that Kemp’s versatility, speed and clubhouse presence make him someone the Astros need to keep unless the offer is too good to pass up.

Neither Alvarez not Tucker will be called up any time soon so that problem doesn't exist right now.  The first problem is what move does Luhnow make when Altuve returns from the IL.  It does not appear likely that Martin will be sent back down.  Does he go with 13 pitchers or 13 position players?

Ultimately we all like Kemp because his contributions come from the 9 spot.

If we needed him elsewhere in the lineup,  and for extended time,  he'd likely struggle to be consistent.

He can play multiple position but he's probably not an everyday starter at any of them.

Love the guy,  but he's not gonna bring back a top prospect if dealt.

I somewhat disagree, but your points are pretty valid.

The makeup of this team is what makes Kemp slightly less valuable.

When you've got 3 plus outfielders (Springer, Reddick, Marisnik) and a left fielder that is a great hitter and a serviceable outfielder (Brantley), it makes what Kemp brings to the table less valuable.

On any team that doesn't have a Marisnik that can be plugged in as super plus on defense and not a hole on offense, Kemp is a pretty hot commodity.

He isn't an everyday starter for sure, but he definitely could provide some serious depth value for a team with a.) a poor fielding outfield or b.) thin bench depth.

The problem with White & Kemp's trade values is that they don't bring huge value to contenders but have more value for teams who are in the lower third of the W/L column.  Those teams are less likely to give up prospects because they are usually rebuilding.  I anticipate any trade to include several low level prospects who may not be on top 20 list but have high ceilings.  With the Astros continuing to draft later, these kind of trades can help populate the depth of the farm system.

Righto. Surely Luhnow is having numerous trade conversations now.

If he decides to go with 13 pitchers then Alvarez's chance of a call up will likely depend solely on an injury to a starter.  Also Alvarez's opportunities are going to be balanced against the need for a guy like Straw instead.  In short, in Luhnow we trust.

Just my opinion, but I think when Altuve is reactivated, Valdez or Devo get sent down. I know they eventually want to settle at 13 pitchers, but I don’t think that is put in stone until Joe Smith comes back. I think the Kemp/White dilemma drags out all the way until the Joe Smith move or until the trade for a starter is made. It may be easier to package White, Kemp or both and prospects as part of a deal for your other starter (Stroman or Bumgarner).

I love Tony Kemp, but if they plan to keep Tucker, Alvarez and Fisher, Kemp will be odd man out. If Fisher and/or Tucker are traded for the pitcher, perhaps Kemp has room to stay.

I’m beginning to think more and more that Alvarez, barring injury, doesn’t debut until September or 2020. If they go to 13 pitchers, hard to see where he fits in and gets adequate playing time. I’d rather have him playing in AAA than call him up to get one or two starts and 6-8 at bats in a week.

Why go to 13? They started the year intending to have a 12-man staff, and they will be just fine without, say, Framber. But they need to improve at 1B/DH. Alvarez should be up in the next few weeks to give them time to evaluate him before the trade deadline. They can make another move if he stumbles.

They're at 13 now.  They started with 12 because of all the off days in the first few weeks of the season and didn't need the extra pitcher.

Right, but they still don't need 13. They do need a DH who can hit, and they have Goliath waiting in AAA.

I understand wanting to get something for Kemp and White, but White may be playing himself into a DFA. Luhnow gave an interview to the Austin paper last week, and he all but said Alvarez will be in Houston soon. He talked about his fit in the lineup.

Luhnow and Hinch are on record that 13 pitchers is what they prefer and want.

I personally disagree, but I don’t count. They only had 12 at the start because scheduled allowed it, and in the middle of that, Hinch basically said he couldn’t wait to get back to 13. This is probably the main reason why they value versatility from the players on the bench.

The good news is that if White continues to suck, maybe he clears waivers.

Because really.  How many teams are really looking for a 28.5 year old, light-hitting, overweight, defensive liability?

I guess if they were considering going back to a 12-man staff they’d have taken the opportunity with McHugh hitting the IL (especially with the bench being so thin right now). Shows what I know.

I am neither 28.5 anymore, nor a defensive liability, but other than that, there’s not much difference between me and Tyler White.

Whitley. Oh, my.

I keep hoping that he's "working on things" at the direction of the pitching staff and is being told to not worry about the on-the-field results.  I think I'm whistling past the graveyard though as I've not seen that at the AAA level before...
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

One perhaps informed theory is he was rushed to this level.

ETA: you are correct, though, about results being less important to evaluators than whatever it is they are looking for in the player’s development. Not sure that general principle encompasses a 12+ ERA.

My suspicion is that this explanation doesn't fly, at all.  Not sure it is a graveyard though.

I’ve been wondering if he needs to go back to CC to get some good outings under his belt.

I caught AJ today during his weekly radio spot with Mike Ferrin and Jim Duquette. The subject of Alvarez was again brought up, as it has been almost weekly in this spot. I’m paraphrasing, but AJ said he understands the questions about him. Said he gets asked about Alvarez as much as he does Bregman. He basically said a call up was close and seemed to allude that he was seriously considered a few days ago, but that the timing wasn’t right because when they looked at the upcoming schedule they saw 5 straight lefties going against us. He did act however like a call up was coming sooner rather than later. I know that will make us all happy as we are anxious to get a look see at this level. I’m suspecting, as someone mentioned earlier in the thread, that they are now waiting until after that June 1 deadline. Regardless, AJ acted like it won’t be long.

One side note, he said they had Mayfield ready to call up for Boston series when Diaz was hurt the first time. He had been told to pack his bags that he was going to Boston and was going to get his first start in Fenway against Sale. Last minute Diaz decided he could play so it was all shelved. He was excited for Super Jack and glad it worked out the way it did (though I’m sure he didn’t want Diaz hurt again).

Alvarez has lost 50+ points on his BA and still is hitting .360. .417 was the high water mark, I think. I am working the game tomorrow afternoon and hope he plays.

.184 BA over his last 10 games.  Only 10 K's in 38 AB's so he's putting the ball in play.

His short, compact swing is what you want from a hitter to keep the K-rate down. A longer swing, like what Tucker has, will lead to more swing and misses because you have to pick up location and pitch type early and often to put said bat on said ball. With Alvarez and his compact swing, he will let the ball travel more and make more contact because his swing isn't long at all. It's quick and powerful at the same time. That's a recipe for "major league hitter" right there. In the majors, it's the ability to recognize a pitch and put wood on it is a good thing. Lots of good things happen when you put the ball in play. I think it's his lack of playing one position (on defense) well enough that is holding him back and at 21 years of age, he can learn to at least do one well enough soon.

RIP Tyler White.  In Peace
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I hope Alvarez can deal with the expectations. It's going to look like, and I'm sure he's going to fee like, it's on his shoulders to turn this offense around. I think it would have been much better if he had come up when he was surrounded by the regular lineup and just had to fit in, but we are where we are.

Agree. And I’ll add that I wish he’d been called up when he was a little hotter, as his average has dropped about 50 points or so, though I understand the timing of it all.

At any rate, I’m as anxious to see him as everyone else.

As Luhnow does not like giving any player away I’m going with the wild card guess.  Brantley to the IL.

With two off days in the five days, could be going back to 12 pitchers to get him on the active roster.  Still need to get him on the 40-man, however.  Could move McCullers to the 60-day to make a spot.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

While I think Guduan going down is a decent bet it doesn’t free up a spot on the 40 man. I’m thinking Tyler White will be the move.

Or then again, perhaps the big trade for a pitcher is in process and some player or players are moving overnight to create the spot. Now wouldn’t that be exciting!!

Guduan sent down.

Who is the corresponding 40-man move?
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Thanks.  Thought that might be the strategy.

You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

Luhnow just said on pregame show about Alvarez, “we think he’s here to stay.”

I’m sure he’s gonna have to hit but that statement is telling. Never heard that about Tucker. Guys at the bottom of this roster, especially White, could have their days numbered.

BTW - a comp from Jeremy Booth "I'm not saying he is, I'm not saying he's not" a statement he got from an evaluator. The hits to all fields with power is right though, pitching him away does not mean he's roll over a pitch, looks like he knows how to go with an outside pitch (as evidenced today) by still gettting power on his nice compact swing and powering the pitch out.

Here is what is does to both inside and outside pitches. That's some great power display.

They couldn’t execute it, but the O’s tried hard in the last bat. I’d expect that’s the near term strategy. Like Jim said, pitching him away is asking for oppo shots.

I thought it was ri-goddamn-diculous before I remembered that he's a lefty.  Looks like he actually has more HRs to LF than RF.

I rewatched his HR from today.  Bottom of the zone, outer half of the plate - not a bad pitch by any means.  He smacked the shit out of it.

From what I've seen that's his happy spot. You'll have better luck pitching him in. It still won't be good luck, but it will be better than outside.

So what is his weakness? He's in the MLB now, he'll be facing the best. I'll be overjoyed with .275  and 18 homers. If he does better he'll be in the rookie of the year race. Also someone with his hand-eye coordination and athleticism should be able to learn how to play first. Maybe in the Arizona Fall League or the Dominican one.

Astros scout behind the trade for Alvarez

Is the scout that recommended the Astros trade for Alvarez still w/ Astros?
He was mentioned by Hinch after the game.  I'm wondering if he is still scouting for the astros.

Just head the interview, Hinch said, Charlie Gonzalez advocated for him. No idea who that is or if he is still with the org.

Glad Charlie was not part of the scouting purge - now, I am curious about that: why so many scouts were let go.
Much appreciated.

The Astros tried to sign him originally but were outbid by the Dodgers so they knew about him. When LA wanted Josh Fields, Luhnow said “Sure, for Alvarez,” and we got him after all.

He’ll have to learn to pull his hands in to turn on the hard inside stuff as Mo Alou did better than anyone. Pitching away will play to his current strength. He drives the ball to LF and LCF.

So if you were pitching to him you would go fastballs on the hands and...?  Breaking balls at the ankles?  Backdoor breaking balls?  Changeups somewhere?

Where's he going to bat in the lineup once everyone is healthy? Everyone gets on base for the most part so he should have plenty of chances to drive runs in wherever he hits, but you really need to make teams think twice about walking him.

He’ll have to learn to pull his hands in to turn on the hard inside stuff as Mo Alou did better than anyone. Pitching away will play to his current strength. He drives the ball to LF and LCF.

That's how they pitched to him in his last AB on Sunday. Everything was hard inside and by that, I mean corner inside high. Nothing low inside, noting middle-in, everything extreme inside to keep him from using his hands. If he were to hit any of those pitches, he'd need to have very quick hands. He would need to get the hips out of the way and let his hands do the hitting to put it in play. That sort of hitting is usually what you hear folks say "trust your hands". Michael Brantley does that really well on hard inside pitches. While Brantley does not have the power potential to right that Alvarez has, if you pitch Brantley inside (and again, I mean you're going for corners to hard inside the corners like about six inches away from the corner, nothing middle-in), he releases his hips and follows through with his hands behind the ball thus creating a nice sort of glide through the ball and it allows him to smash the ball hard. He's not trying to elevate the ball, just trying to meet it and guide it on an even path with the speed it's coming in. Think of hitting a middle-in fastball right back up the middle. If you trust your hands, a 95mph fastball can be met and guided right back up the middle at 100 to 105 mph or so.

The guy who I saw hit so well left-handed trusting his hands on the hard inside part of the plate with power: Barry Bonds.

A great breakdown of Barry Bonds' swing mechanics and how he was able to create bat speed (a whipping motion) to hit any pitch so well. I'm sure with the edgetronic video breakdowns the Astros provide their players, Alvarez has plenty of information to help him be a better hitter using his hands to generate bat speed on inside pitches. It will be fun to see if he can apply how the major league pitchers will create a book on him and how he'll adjust to keep doing what he's been doing and that is to be not only a power hitter, but a good overall hitter.

If I was making it out against right handed pitching....

Springer CF
Altuve 2B
Bregman 3B
Correa SS
Brantley LF
Alvarez DH
Gurriel 1B
Reddick RF
Chirinos C

I can’t insert him higher than those first five just yet. That lineup up is deep and trouble for anyone. With Gurriel and Reddick behind him you have some contact guys that I think will discourage teams from pitching around him.

Now, if he is truly for real and comes up and produces immediately and consistently like say, Austin Riley has done for the Braves, then that will be a different story. If he does that, I would have no problem putting him 4th with Brantley right behind him.

No LH hitters back-to-back.

ANd Chirinos batting 9th means lower OBP which means lower RBI % for Springer when the lineup turns over. Springer only bats leadoff once in a game (mostly). His danger in the lineup is predicated by a good bottom of the order hitter, like Kemp or Reddick who will get challenged more but also know the strike zone well too. You don't want to switch Chirinos approach to be like Kemp or Reddick.

The Astros tried to sign him originally but were outbid by the Dodgers so they knew about him. When LA wanted Josh Fields, Luhnow said “Sure, for Alvarez,” and we got him after all.

Yea, Vlad was a great hitter. He had the grip it and rip it approach. Swinging at pitches bouncing in the dirt or above his head. Surprisingly making contact! Moises was a professional hitter. Exceptional approach and discipline.

To be equated to either would be an honor for such a young hitter as Alvarez...I'd rather he follow the approach of Moises if I have a choice.

Coach: you've seen more of him. Thus far, he's showing some Ortiztype bat control. Is this usual? The league is going to make adjustments and will likely start burning it up in his hands, but right now, his bat control surprises me the most.

I'm not saying he's anywhere in the same galaxy as a hitter but mid-career Bonds is who his swing has reminded me of the most so far. He's pretty similar to Delgado in terms of body type but I don't see a ton of similarity in their swings.

The lineup last night and tonight is interesting as AJ is going against conventional wisdom. Last night, and tonight, lefties are back to back and tonight Chirinos bats 9th.

Man so did I.

Saw him hit a grand slam in the dome against the pirates.   Astros scored in every inning (or 7 of 8).

I was in the CF cheap seats and saw Glenn Wilson hit one into the loge at the dome.  Longest one I've ever seen in person.

McGwire in BP in the Dome right after he got traded to the CoArds.

Piazza into dead center off of Wagner, well into the loge.  I believe it was a DH day, because I was sitting in the LF seats with nobody around waiting for game 2 to move to the boxes.

His first game with STL.  We were there in the upper deck dead LF with a target made out of a sheet and spraypaint, just for BP. Twice he landed about 30 rows toward CF from us.  Never seen anything like it.

Am I making up that Piazza HR off of Wags?  I swear it happened.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I don’t remember it too well but my Dad told me I was there for a HR that Cecil Feilder hit over the roof in Detroit.

ETA that I should have remembered since I was like 15... I’ll take his word for it though. The way he described it, it was the longest HR of all time.

You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

When I saw McGwire’s BP, he did not hit rockets. He hit long lazy flies which landed it the upper deck!

McGwire's home runs always had a majestic quality to them.

Where are the Rooster and Toy Cannon seats from the dome now?

My dad pointed those out to me on my first game.   I always looked for them every game I attended until they were removed or painted over or whatever.

Pretty sure the Astros saved those -- I seem to recall they had one or both on display at some point recently, either when the Astrodome was opened for a tour last year or in one of those display windows in Union Station.

That's a cool photo...assuming that seat, and Wynn's are in the HOF?  Or maybe the Astros saved for their own all of fame?  Wonder if they had the foresight?  I have not been able to visit MMP this year but am assuming they have areas in their HOF that will allow for turnover of different memorabilia items for fans to see each year they come in...this is how the Baseball HOF works (about 30% of it I'd guess).
