Hinch on Tyler White
« on: April 19, 2019, 05:39:21 pm »
From McTaggart tweets:

"He hasn't handled the fastball. He hasn't put fastballs in play like he normally does. He's getting pitched a little bit differently and he's going to have to adjust to that. It is a small sample. It's early in the season."

"The last thing I'd want to do is have a meeting with player and tell him he needs to hit for more power. That's like the kiss of death for a player. It's not going to help his swing; it's not going to help his contact."

The clock is ticking.

Is that a click ticking or the sound of balls being smacked in Round Rock?

Either way production from DH would be welcome.

He's not totally inept, at least he's getting on base, but for a guy whose only job is to hit the ball he's definitely lacking.

HudsonHawk on Tyler White:  “He needs to start fucking driving the ball”
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

This team has never really invested in a DH.

Very true. It’s been looked at as another opportunity at positional diversity... well as much as a dh can be. Can you imagine a David Ortiz on this club?!

With the penchant for 13 pitchers, it doesn’t leave much room for guys you can’t plug in to various defensive positions. Eight guys have to start, a backup catcher, a Jake Marisnick to play some outfield, and another guy who can give an infielder a day off, and you’ve got one spot left. Do you give up a guy like Kemp?  For better or worse (and I happen to think for the better), the Astros value flexibility.

Nobody really does.  The average OPS for an AL DH is in the .780 range over the past few years.

I would count the Gattis trade as an investment.  He played 246 games at DH, and 118 in the field  (106  at Catcher 11 in LF, 1 at IB).

The club swore they could make him a catcher.

It tried to, but Nelson Cruz signed elsewhere. Beltran was a DH investment also.

Tyler White is Tyler White, occasional hot streak notwithstanding. DH needs an upgrade.

I have to think that if White continues to struggle, we will see the advent of Alvarez.

His OPS in first thirteen games is 1.295.

Kyle Tucker, btw, has an OPS of .397.  Anyone worried yet?

I think there is something going on that ain't quite right. That kind of regression is alarming.
