My hope is that Crane tells JV he has the “DQ offer,” without the bullshit. If he wants to pitch, he’ll have a “handshake” standing offer from the Astros of $25mm for that season (or whatever makes sense given the market). When he was wants to hang em up, we’ll part ways and give him a big send-off.
Now, I’m not sure Justin would spring for this arrangement after his comments on FA this offseason—and his performance has warranted a contract longer than one year should he choose to pursue it—but it seems like it would be a win-win if he wants to finish his career in Houston and maximize his annual earnings. Some FAs need to longer term security provided by a longer-term deal, but in JV’s case a) he is set, b) he’d have to settle for lower annual earnings for a multi-year deal, and c) he would probably want to retire if he (god forbid) sustains a serious arm injury.
