RIP Willie McCovey
« on: November 01, 2018, 07:44:33 am »
A giant among Giants, the great Stretch McCovey has passed on. He played through parts of 4 decades 1959 - 1980, and with Willie Mays for a while made the most powerful and feared 1-2 punch in NL history. 20th all time in HRs, ROY, MVP, first ballot HoFer..

For a time, that team also included Orlando Cepeda, Jim Ray Hart, and the Alou brothers. Quite a lineup.

Was Bobby Bonds on that team too?

Bonds came up midway through the '68 season.  He and Mays played together until Willie was traded to the Mets in '72.  McCovey was traded to the Padres after the '73 season.

The famous Game 7 of the '62 World Series...Bottom of the 9th, two out...Giants trailing 1-0...Matty Alou on 3B, Willie Mays on 2B...Cepeda on deck and McCovey at the plate...
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Looking at that series, Ralph Terry started games 2, 5 and 7, with 5 and 7 being complete game wins. Game 6 was delayed 4 days by rain.

Oh, and McCovey lined out to 2nd.

Leading 1-0 with two out in the 9th, the Yankee starter is still in the ballgame with three HOFers (Mays, McCovey, and Cepeda) due up.  Something tells me Dave Roberts would not have let him finish the game.

Yes.  I took that as the point of the story.  Not the line out.

Well, it *was* the most famous lineout in baseball history.  There were even two Peanuts strips dedicated to "The Lineout".

Hit like a rocket but right at Richardson. 1-2 feet either way and Giants win.

Richardson had shifted his position too.

Luis Gonzalez hits a little jam-shot popup just over a drawn in infield....McCovey hits a screaming line drive.  Baseball is a cruel game sometimes.
