I think they should score more than the Sox.

No shit. I just came over to TBS because I thought the game started at 7:09 or whatever cockamamie time they've settled on. Nope, it's 7:30, so I accidentally stumbled across these guys. What a joke.

I just do it manually.  Figure out which one is ahead, and then pause it for the appropriate amount of time.  I'll have the radio guys on my computer and mute the TV.

I usually wait for a pitch to hit the catcher's glove,  pause the tv, then resume when the streaming radio broadcast catches up.

Usually about 4-6 seconds.

Use the sound of the ball hitting the mitt on the radio and reference that with seeing the ball hit the mitt on TV.

“Free Passes” is this year’s theme.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning will make it worse.  We need to get something going.

Betts missed it.

He missed it, but he missed it because he hit the fan's hand. But the fan wasn't in the field of play. It'll be an interesting call.

It looked that way but the his glove may have closed because it was hit by the guy reaching for the ball?

And he didn't reach for Betts' glove. He was just trying to catch the ball. Betts ran into the fan.

Hard to say if it was an overturn, since West declined to make a clear call or tell anybody what the call on the field was.

The report from TV guys is that the MLB review was inconclusive so they deferred to his out call on the field.

It was conclusive. The ball was clearly over the line and Betts reached over. I think he catches it without the fan there, but that’s not the rule. It went to replay and MLB gagged on their dick.

I’m still surprised by how high Mookie got up to make it close.

It still should have been ruled a home run

Giving away 2 runs and having 2 stolen for a net negative 4 is a terrible way to start the game.

Jeff Passan  @JeffPassan 2m ago
This seems pretty straightforward: "No interference shall be allowed when a fielder reaches over a fence" unless "it is clearly intentional." If you look at the replay, it's awfully hard to see clear intention from the fan in touching Mookie Betts' glove.

Jeff Passan  @JeffPassan 8m ago
I'd love to hear the explanation for that. Didn't look like a fan reached over the fence. If he didn't, and the ball was over the fence when it was touched, and the contact was incidental between the fan and Mookie Betts' glove, that has to be a home run, right?

Jayson Stark  @jaysonst 7m
If you had bottom of the 1st, Game 4, for the first "Joe West moment" of this series, you win.

Not sure how Cowboy Joe & the replay reviewers in NY could conclude that fan reached onto the field of play to interfere, based on what I saw.

But that's how a 2-run HR became an out!

Joel Sherman  @Joelsherman1 10m
Altuve is called out on fan interference after replay. I think that is a bad call. The ball was beyond the fence and Betts closed his glove before the ball arrived. I don't think he was going to catch that. 2-run HR goes away. #Astros #RedSox

Buster Olney  @Buster_ESPN 12m
Are you going to eject the fans for that?
If not, it should be a home run.

Doesn’t help that the sad sack TV commentators are carrying the water for MLB. “It wasn’t conclusive”, “the goal of replay is to get it right, but this time they had no chance”, etc. Any fool could look at that reply and see that it was conclusive. Just look at the direction the fans were reaching: straight up, NOT forward.

God dammit.

Not pitched in a while.  Give him time to get the feel.

That call highlights the stupidity of the video replay system, when the umps clearly don't have a fuckin' clue what happened, they should take a look at a replay before they make a call.

The ball has to clear the fence. Hitting the top and bouncing back in is not a HR.

The relevant rule is 2.00(d):   (d) Spectator interference occurs when a spectator reaches out of the stands, or goes on the playing field, and (1) touches a live ball or (2) touches a player and hinders an attempt to make a play on a live ball.

How did they not get that right on replay?  The fan did NOT reach out of the stands.

So we have an uncatcher.

I'd rather see Gattis out there, at this point.  Hell, isn't Marwin the emergency catcher?  Give him a mitt.

Maldonado has played as poorly as a position player can.

And 50 notches below what his usual level of play is.

This certainly isn’t the start any of us were hoping for, but the game isn’t over until the Red Sox get 27 outs.  Lots of baseball to be played, and anything can happen, just like last year.

I can clearly remember a video with Ausmus discussing blocking pitches. He talked about turning the mitt over, getting it on the ground, and getting over and down. He explicitly said one should not to stab at the ball.

No joke. Before this inning I was so frustrated I grabbed my 55inch tv and took it in to the garage where I have a couch at the moment (refinishing some wood floors). No clue why I did that but I’m watching the game in the garage now, I don’t care how cold it gets.

IMO Altuve wasn’t showboating, he’s taking it easy on that knee whenever possible.

The inability to get the 9 hole hitter out with two outs is going to be the difference in this series.

It’s as if there’s one specific baseball-sized area in the zone that Bradley is locked in on, yet our pitchers manage to keep throwing it right there at inopportune moments.

At some point the bullpen will have to hold a lead for longer than three batters.

Season is slipping away

At least the second half of the order has awakened.

But time is short,  and the pen HAS to throw zeroes.

Our starters not being able to pitch innings is part of that, too.

That inning might've been the worst playoff baseball I've ever seen, as far as stupid mistakes go. Correa missing second, THE MORE IMPORTANT OUT OF THE TWO OUTS HE WAS TRYING TO GET, was little league stupid.

McCullers stubborn insistence missing the zone low and in to walk in a run wasn't quite as dumb, but Jesus Christ.

Bloop would be OK.
Nothing worthwhile comes without pain, ask any Astros fan.

I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy
