According to this Boston Globe article J. D. Martinez has been giving younger Red Sox players something that he did not get w/ the struggling, leaderless 2013 Astros team - and he is still chafing about it.

Quote
What J.D. Martinez remembers most about the 2013 season is not that he struggled mightily at the plate, or that his team, the Houston Astros, lost 111 games.

What aggravates him still, even five years later, is that not one teammate offered a hand to pull him out of the quicksand.....

"....I never forgot that, how I felt going through that,” Martinez said. “I always said to myself, ‘I’ll never be that person.’ I knew what it felt like. I would never wish that on anybody.....”

He has helped create a welcoming Red Sox clubhouse that is similar to the current  Astros clubhouse.

It might help to remind him about a few  2013 Astros facts, such as
1. "...at season’s end, their roster had an average age of 26.0 with 17 rookies....
2. Houston had 14 players make their Major League debuts in 2013."

There were not many vets to welcome that team.

I thought Carlos Pena was supposed to be the designated vet mentor on the 2013 club. Other than that, what the fuck did JD expect - Matt Dominguez to guide him through MLB life? The only other vets really on that club were pitchers like Erik Bedard or Jose Veras.

Or is he not talking about veteran leadership? Is he just saying he didn't have any friends on the team? Several of whom he must have played with in the minors...?

Dude that was 5 years ago. You were a team with(mostly) shit players who were just trying to figure things out, just like you. What do you expect should have happened? If you are seriously still hurt by what transpired then you need to grow the fuck up.

Didn't he once say that he learned his uppercut swing from Jason Castro?

Castro got him in touch with the swing coach that fixed his swing after the 13 season

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

If i counted correctly, of the 19 players to get 100+ AB's for that team, exactly 3 had more career at bats than JD entering that season:  Chris Carter, Brett Wallace and 23 year old Jose Altuve.  JD, you WERE the savvy veteran leadership of that team.
Yay.

He's a bit more generous to the Astros in this piece.]

So true!

Sometimes things that hurt a lot (being released by the Astros to give more ABs to "real" prospects) can turn out for our good (being exposed to different coaches and given more ABs to develop with another team).

I have seen that happen a few times with unwanted and seemingly ill-timed job losses that eventually became transitions to  jobs that were a much better fit.  While the sting of being fired is still there - and it still HURTS, hindsight can mitigate that pain and I become grateful for the short-term loss as I focus on the long-term results.

That may be what J. D. is struggling with now.  It's a shame, b/c he can get trapped into trying to prove something to the Astros during the ALCS that may well result in less productivity.  He needs to quit looking in the rear view mirror and start being the new J. D. - in a week or so....

Well, he is 0-7 with a walk and 3 Ks in the ALCS...

Good work, Limes...Martinez with an RBI double his first at bat.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

1-4 with a walk and and RBI.   Hardly busting out, and He wasn’t the story tonight.
