Ken Rosenthal writes in his latest notes column that while Morton is still leaning towards pitching next year, he is still considering retirement. The time away from his kids seems to be the primary factor.

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

From a selfish standpoint, this may benefit the Astros because he may not seek a long-term deal, which I would imagine the club would be reluctant to provide. If he wants to pitch another year, we offer him a nice one year contract with some type of mutual option, and, if he wants to spend more time with his family, we wish him the best.

Morton (the always humble) already has said if he plays, he wants to be back with the Astros if they want him.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

MLBTR speculates quite reasonably that the Astros will extend a QO (~$18 million?) and Morton will accept. That'd be a happy outcome for all, I think.

And even if he doesn’t accept it, he can ride into the sunset with the best two years of his career under his belt, a WS ring on his finger, and nothing left to prove.

Great to see a good guy finish well.
Nothing worthwhile comes without pain, ask any Astros fan.
