I have started watching the new Jack Ryan series on Amazon Prime. In the second episode a character asks the Ryan character for fantasy baseball advice. She wants to know whether to pick up Grienke or Keuchel.  (Surprised me that it wasn't Sale and Severino.) Ryan being an analytical guru spouts stats blah blah blah.  Then answers Keuchel.
Goin' for a bus ride.

Does anyone know how to get rid of that stupid ESPN crawl at the bottom of the screen if you are watching online?

Pretty nice when you don't actually have to hit the zone to get a strike called.

T1:

Springer singles to CF
Altuve pops out F3 on the first pitch
Passed ball...Springer to 2B
Bregman...3-0...walks
Gurriel strikes out looking at a pitch 8 inches off the plate...got royally fucked in that at bat, with two called strikes that were nowhere close
Correa...first pitch sails behind his head...strikes out swinging

No score

None of them hit hard.

Not hard,  but the Betts pitch caught way too much outer plate for that alignment and the rbi pitch was too generous for 1-2.

The soft grounders were a good sign though.   Hopefully he'll get dialed in.

B2:

Somebody is batting, but ESPN isn't interested in showing who it is, instead preferring to interview Joe Kelly on his pre-game, bullpen shenanigans...but this guy eventually (I think it's Kinsler) works the count full and grounds out 6-3
Phillips...ESPN still splooging over Kelly's clown act...grounds out 3-1
Nunez...ESPN still hasn't acknowledged there's a ballgame going on...grounds to SS, Correa with a backhanded play, but can't nip the runner...infield single
Leon grounds out 4-3

1-1

That was not a shiftfuck double. No way he gets that ball unless he was playing on the line. Come on, HH.

The ball landed 30 feet off the line.  It's easy to think it's on the line in Fenway because of the way the wall shortens to the Pesky Pole, but it's an optical illusion.

Strange that the speedy McCann didn't get waved in,  what with his basse stealing propensity and all.

He does look far more slim after his dl stint. Not that he should ever steal a base but it’s good to see him moving well again. That could be important down the stretch.

It’s SO good to feel this late season tension again after last year.

T6:

Altuve homers to LF on the first pitch
Bregman grounds out 4-3 in the shift
Gurriel singles up the middle
Correa singles up the middle, Gurriel to 2B
Marwin flies out to shallow RF

Porcello out, Hembree in

White...quickly down 0-2...1-2...2-2...doubles off the LF wall, Gurriel scores, Correa scores

Hembree out, Johnson in...

McCann walks
Reddick...full count...doubles to RF, White scores, McCann to 3B

Johnson out, Brasier in

Springer blown away on three straight fastballs

But the Astros bat around and tie it up...new ballgame, 5-5

What's the point of replay if you don't get the calls right after replay?

It's fucking embarrassing. We just wasted 3-4 minutes for them to re-blow the call.

T7:

Wright the Knuckleballer in for the Sox

Altuve bunt for a single, Phillips throws it into the stands, Altuve to 2B on the single and TE5
Bregman...tries to bunt..foul...0-2...flies out F8
Altuve to 3B on a passed ball
Gurriel...infield in...grounds into FC, Altuve out 6-2 at the plate...Hinch challenging...replay shows he's clearly safe...but call upheld anyway...WOW!!!
Correa...0-2...flies out F8

Astros get fucked worse than the Texans did...5-5 still at the stretch.

There was a definitive angle,  that showed his hand down BEFORE the tag was applied.

So,  you know,  that usually means the runner is safe.

I'm glad we don't have to listen to Ashby tell us, yet again, how it's just as quick to glove the ball and throw as it is to barehand it and throw.

Goddamn it, I had forgotten all about that.

T8:

Marwin...batting righty against the righty...flies out F8 on the first pitch
White doubles right over the 1B bag
Marisnick pinch running for White
McCann...3-0...takes strike one three feet off the plate...Jeez...walks
J.D. Davis pinch running for McCann
Reddick grounds into 4-6-3 double play

5-5

There’s the rub.  Probably. Has to be convincing to overturn.

That’s not how it works. Some angles are better than others. One cannot overweight a shitty angle as justification for ruling it inconclusive. If the best angle is inconclusive, then you’re right that the call should stand.

It was clear that Altuve’s hand was on the plate before the tag was applied.  Either the replay officials in New York are blind, or they had alterior motives for not overturning tue call.

Reason number 1,000,000,000 I could never be a MLB Manager. I would've been tossed .005 seconds after they signaled out  after the replay, then gotten a 10 game suspension for bumping any umpire that got close to me.

The fact that replay "makes the call" and there's no recourse after is fucking crazy.

And A-Rod needs to be quiet, though he’s correct. It should be 6-5 Astros and Porcello was getting calls off the edges in the early innings.

B8:

McHugh in...Maldonado into catch

Bogaerts bloops a single to RF
Moreland, pinch hitting for Pearce, singles to RF, through the shift, Bogaerts to 2B
Kinsler strikes out swinging
Holt, pinch hitting for Phillips...full count...walks, Bogaerts to 3B, Moreland to 2B

That's it for McHugh, Sipp in

Swihart, pinch hitting for Nunez, corners in, middle playing for two...strikes out swinging
Vazquez, pinch hitting for Leon...0-2...Vazquez bitching about both calls, Cora too...1-2 on a FANTASTIC block by Maldonado...PONCHE!!!

What a job by Sipp!!!

Still 5-5

All night on Astros hitters too.

Only on Astros hitters.  Keuchel wasn’t getting the same calls off the outside corner that Porcello was.

These fucking dumbasses are trying to suggest that a string on Leon's glove might've gotten Altuve sliding in to home.

Nevermind that that isn't a thing, and hasn't been since 2016 .

Kimbrel in for the Sox...a bunch of defensive changes

Springer...full up...strikes out swinging
Altuve strikes out swinging at a pitch in his eyes
Bregman lines out to CF

5-5

I’m still stewing over that call at home. Why can’t we get some sort of short explanation as to wtf they couldn’t overturn that? There was a view that was clear as day showing him beating the tag. With the technology available today they can sync views and see that the hand was down on the base right?! W. T. F.

If they’re just going to defer to the decision made on the field whenever they might have a slightly tough call on their hands then why have this shit there in the first place?

MLB decided they didn’t want the Red Sox, with baseball’s best record, to get swept at home and intervened on their behalf.

Today in the football game one of the fuckwit refs misspoke and said that a pass interference call was against 24 on the offense when it was plainly 24 on the defense. It was plainly defensive pass interference and of course no Texan who plays offense wears 24. When the official corrected himself Belichick went fucking nutso on the sideline.

I wonder what it would feel like to root for a team that so regularly got the benefit of fucking ALL the calls to where you feel aggrieved when a guy misspeaks and then corrects himself to your detriment. I wonder what it would feel like to root for a team where you felt like you had a right to bitch about a pitch that was called a strike that was clearly through the strike zone.

I guess I'll never know.

B9:

Rondon in

Betts flies out F9
Benintendi singles to LF
Martinez grounds into FC, Benintendi out 4-6 at 2B
Bogaerts singles up the middle, Martinez to 2B
Lin, pinch runs for Martinez
Moreland flies to LF, Marwin let's it drop at his feet and tries to barehand it on the bounce, Lin scores,

Astros go down 6-5

With Reddick, Marisnick or Kemp out there, that ball is caught.  Furthermore, he ran around the ball instead of running *to* it.  It's as if he was setting up for a throw to the plate, rather than trying to catch the ball.  Finally, if he's not healthy enough to dive for a ball to save the game, he shouldn't be out there in the 9th.

If that replay can’t get overturned than the current system is broken. I don’t think there’s any Ill intent but if you’re paralyzed by the call on the field and have to see everything perfectly from every different angle even if one is pretty fucking clear then fuck that shit. It’s only another way to delay the game.

Oh I know.  The Astros have made their own bed here.  The A's have it relatively easy from here on out, so the Astros have to keep winning.
