Players Weekend
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Players Weekend

I'm probably just getting old and crotchety, but this seems like a pretty lame idea. But I guess it doesn't really hurt anybody, so have fun.

I wonder what the real issue is with Altuve's knee. I hope it's something that can be cleaned up completely in the off-season.

Earlier in the broadcast they were saying that that's the name of a long-time Houston clubhouse guy.
Of course! He just passed away.
He breezed him, one more time!

You're not exactly my idea of a prototypical catcher.

I know. I've mentioned this before, how on my Pee Wee team, the Owls, a kid pitch league, sadly, one other kid, Sammy, could throw and I could catch. I became the catcher, over time I became a catcher. Later, when we started playing something that resembled actual baseball, my not being a total fuckwit was helpful in my manning that position. This ant attack happened when I was 17 or 18 or so. Most of the other catchers by that time were considerably huskier than I was. It's weird, thinking back, I never had any sort of cannon arm but I never had any problem throwing guys out at second.

I'm working on my catcher's physique now, but I sort of doubt it will pay any real baseball dividends.

Rivera...0-2...1-2...2-2..singles up the middle
Marte grounds into 5-4-3 double play...relay throw was off the bag, ump says Yuli tagged him, but Angels challenging...replay shows he missed him...yep, over turned...just a FC as Marte reaches...no error, but a play that should have easily been made as Altuve had all day and lobbed the throw
Ward grounds into 5-4-3 double play...for now...Angels challenging again...replay shows he beat the throw by a full step...another 5-4 FC.  At least Altuve made a strong throw this time
Wild pitch...Ward to 2B
Young...full count...strikes out swinging

5-0 Astros

Back to the Altuve play on the bloop:

If the runner hustles it back to first and stays there, when the throw comes in the batter is out but the runner remains safe.

But,  if the 1B steps off before he catches it,  all he has to do is tag the runner then step on the bag.

Yes, as long as the force is still on.  Once you retire the batter though, there is not more force anywhere.

B7:

Simmons flies out F9
Rivera grounds to 3B and Bregman throw it 47 feet over Yuli's head into the stands...Rivera to 2B on the TE5
Marte singles to RF...Rivera thrown out at the plate, 9-4-2, for now...Angles challenging...replay looks close...upheld...fans upset...Marte to 2B on the throw
Ward homers to LCF...Marte scores
Young...0-2...strikes out swinging

6-2 Astros

There was only one out. Plus that runner was erased at the plate so I don’t think so.

No, they are earned.  Even if Bregman makes the play, the single then HR makes them earned.

Ramirez in for the Angels

Reddick intentionally walked
Maldonado singles to RF, Marwin scores, Reddick, running on the pitch, goes to 3B
Kemp grounds into 4-6-3 double play on the first pitch

But if there were two outs and Bregman’s error extended the inning then they would be unearned, correct?

Correct.  You reconstruct the inning without the error.  Any runs that still scores is earned.

Yes, as long as the force is still on.  Once you retire the batter though, there is not more force anywhere.

I like them too. Way better than last year.

They look more like Giants unis than Astros unis...

Yep, but had it been right at someone it wouldn’t have been the 153rd double play!  [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

If it had been right at someone with as hard as that was hit, it was a double play anyway.

My catching career was less successful. My dad, who was a 4 sport letterman at Port Arthur Jefferson, was a pitcher and catcher in baseball. He was my LL coach,I was 10, and he convinced me to try catching. We practiced in the back yard with my brother swinging a bat but not trying to hit the ball, and I learned to catch it without blinking fairly quickly.

At practice one day, he had me put the gear on to catch a round of BP. No problem. Piece of cake. During the 15-20 minutes I caught BP, I was hit by four foul tips. When he took me out and rotated another catcher in, I told him “Never again!” This ended my career as a catcher, and I was a pitcher/infielder exclusively in the days and years to follow.

You know, I never really minded getting dinged up a little bit. I mean, I didn't love it and I don't consider myself an especially pain tolerant person. I guess I was just always more aware of how goddamn hot it was in all that gear than I was of how my forearm was stinging.

My forearms would have been welcome spots. I got hit in my collarbone and my shoulder. You are tougher than I.

I caught once... once. For 2 innings. I was a 3B/P that year and our catcher and backup catcher didn't show. My coach says "hey Doyce, mind catching this game?" I've never done it coach. "That's ok, nobody else has either, I think you'll do fine."

I did not do fine. 3 passed balls in 2 innings. Ball was fouled off my throwing hand. It was too damned hot. After two innings I vowed to never catch again. Other than catching the occasional bullpen for other pitchers, I never have. Just simply wasnt cut out for it

I've broken my collarbone twice along with numerous fingers and toes on foul tips, and been hit in the nuts more times than I care to remember, though only once coughed blood as a result.  The bruises on the forearm and top of the thigh are ubiquitous during the season.  I've been knocked nearly unconscious many times on collisions at the plate, and had my eye socket shattered fielding a throw to the plate that took a bad hop (back in the day, we were taught to shed the mask, nowadays you're taught to keep it on for this very reason).  Center fielder is a much a safer position, but for whatever reason they never let me play anywhere else.

I really learned to block pitches when I was in Sr. Little League (13-14).  My coach would make me suit up except for a mitt and bounce pitches from about 10 feet away.  Then he'd let me get the glove, back up to about 20 feet and hit balls at me with a fungo.  Hard.  But by the time I was 15, you couldn't throw one by me.

Closest I ever came to dying was from the heat.

Muhammed Ali once said only once was he seriously afraid he was going to die in the ring, and that was from the 120 heat at the Thrilla in Manilla.  I've feld like that a few times.

This is why I say you have to be absolutely nuts to willing play catcher

A particularly sadistic Pony League coach used to do the same drills with me that Hudson describes. Do them TO me is probably a better way of putting it. But, again, like he says, the worst part of it, at least if you're in Texas, is, by far, the heat.

I always enjoyed being in the middle of everything and having everyone in front of me and easy access to the umpire and so on, and I never minded any facet of the actual position other than catching towering popups. I was never hugely confident at that. I don't remember any particularly embarrassing drops or anything, just a sort of sense of dread when some goon would pop one up that I should get to. We'd practice by taking a pitching machine and dialing it up to 120 miles per hour and pointing that thing straight up or whatever angle you need to have the thing shoot up and land in play behind the plate. But I still never liked that at all.

I really liked that Pony League coach, by the way. He was crazy as fuck. His own son was long since too old to play. Hell, the son may have been in his 30's by the time I played for the guy. Whenever I see a big league player do something stupid like not run out that popup the other day I can't help but think about what that coach would have said and done. His threshold for slapdickery was quite low.
