Still no Springer, Altuve back
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Nice play by Yuli that probably doesn't get made by White.

Catch the fucking ball,  Stassi.

Strikeout, run scored,  everybody safe,  bases still juiced.

Seager is out on  the strike out.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

How many times did you see him?
Twice.  Corpus earlier this year when the family was at the beach, and his one start at Lancaster a couple of years ago when I was in LA on business.

No doubt it’s improved since Lancaster.  I wonder if the time at Corpus was just an off day for him.

I’m convinced that one of the reasons we are hitting into so many double plays is because we are so passive on the bases. We are on a pace to steal 22 less bases this year compared to last year. At the current pace we will steal our fewest bases as a team since 2007.

Now, we may not have a team built to run as much as last year and I understand that, but when you play station to station ball expect numerous double plays.

For me and what I’m seeing... it’s more that they are swinging too often at “pitchers pitches” and watching fresh meat sail on by. They make contact for sure and that’s nice and all, but their pitch selection is garbage.

Taking hittable fastballs and swinging at shit. It's been a problem all season.

Ok, I’ve got to go to bed. Staying up for the duration last night didn’t help so hopefully my turning in will.

One thing before I call it a night. Valdez was VERY impressive. Great breaking ball and he was very calm on the mound with his demeanor, even when he got into the bases loaded trouble. The situation did not look too big for him. I would say that we could be looking at one of the early favorites to replace Keuchel in the rotation next season.

It would be unbelievable if it weren't the freaking theme of the offense this year.

is Carlos Correa finding his groove?

Altuve returns and Correa 3 for 3.
Coincidence?

5 gidp ties the club record set in 1962.

That's right.  The defending WS Champions tied the expansion .45s.

Springer being *less* likely to gidp is the reason I would have had him hit first. Doesnt affect the defense the next inning either way. If he does gidp then Maldonado replaces Springer instead of gattis. If he doesnt then gattis hits for Kemp and you bring in Maldonado for gattis with Springer going to center.

Doesnt matter now as the game was won anyway. Just my 2 cents on how I would have handled it.

Late night recap:

Correa 3 hits and a sac fly rbi; definitely looked better

Altuve hitless but had a walk in a very patient AB that set up the sac fly

The gidps allowed Detwiler to stay in and rest their pen

If you missed it,  check out the Flamber highlights; the dude has a sweet curve and his FB was around 93

White had another extra base hit

Osuna pitched the 8th but threw a lot of pitches, Rondón had a 9 pitch save

Finally: ASTROS WIN!

Agree.  But I'm guessing AJ's preference was to not have Springer play at all.

I had to miss the last two games due to being on the east coast and having to go to bed early. I just want to say thanks to everyone that does the PBP. It really helps in these situations. And to all the commentary as well.

Big win for the good guys. I’ll have to check out the highlights of Framber later. Sounds like a great debut.

Baseball reference confirms it.

Framber Valdez is the only player in MLB history named Framber.

He joins Marwin and Yuli in that club.
(ETA: The Unique Appellation Club; Marwin and Yuli, like all big leaguers before them,  are also not named Framber)

(There have been just 14 Valdez's's's in the bigs)

I’m convinced that one of the reasons we are hitting into so many double plays is because we are so passive on the bases. We are on a pace to steal 22 less bases this year compared to last year. At the current pace we will steal our fewest bases as a team since 2007.

Now, we may not have a team built to run as much as last year and I understand that, but when you play station to station ball expect numerous double plays.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Sparks on the radio last night said he thought they need to be more aggressive on the bases and maybe that would eliminate some of the double plays.

Bregman not taking 3rd on the Correa fly ball was mentioned a few times on the broadcast.   Things may have changed,  but that could have put him on 3rd with 1 out.  If the same groundball is they would have had to go around the horn to turn it and it wasn't exactly smoked.

I like the concept of not swinging at pitcher's pitches early in ABs.

I value your opinion as an Astros fan and GENERALLY enjoy your contributions. I posted something a few weeks ago about how I thought we should hit and run more. It was just an opinion and I was labeled by you and MRaup as panicking. Why my suggestion of a hit and run was more of a panic post compared to all of the posts in here nightly about how this team is falling apart is a mystery to me. AJ himself said on the radio about a week after my comment that perhaps he should start runners more to generate some offense. I almost posted something about that but let it go. It was water under the bridge to me.....until today.

What is your fucking problem with me? My post above simply tried to give an explanation as to why we may be hitting into so many double plays. I didn’t suggest a course of action. I even said how we may not be built steal this year compared to last. I simply tried to convey an observation about why we hit into such an extraordinary amount of double plays. And for that I have to deal with your vitriol??

Save that shit for Rangers fans. We should treat each other better my friend.

He pitched Saturday and Sunday before his Tuesday start. Kudos to him for trying.
Agree. I thought he did a good job.

Valdez was impressive. The camera angle may have been exaggerating the break but that curve ball was wicked. The Mariners’ hitters would probably agree as many were ducking for cover. Not sure I’ve seen a breaking ball that good since Bert Blyleven.

His problem isn't with you, and neither is mine.

The problem is you're making a suggestion that is pretty much nonsensical. Starting the runners is great on paper, but starting the runners also makes a lot of assumptions about hitters that clearly AJ Hinch and the braintrust feel isn't going to help, or they'd already be doing it.

Also, starting a runner at first isn't nearly as useful against a shifted infield, as there is still going to be a guy in that hole that the 2nd baseman/shortstop usually is not occupying anymore because he'd be going to cover the bag.

The long and short of it is that most of the double plays are happening because hitters are bringing a shitty approach to the plate, not because the runners aren't moving.

Outstanding post. My reply likely would have been more long-winded and too analytical about when you start runners and why. Good job.

It doesn’t matter to me if you agree or disagree with what I post. We all have opinions and they are right or wrong in the eyes of different people. That is one of the things this forum is for. Debate and discussion about the team we love. My only issue was being labeled and cussed at because of an opinion, an opinion by the way that AJ himself a week later said “we probably need to look at starting runners more often to try and generate some offense.”

I just believe in treating people with dignity and respect, which is real old fashion in this day an age when you can type whatever you want on a forum with no real fear physical repercussions. I will always do that to each of you whether I agree with your opinion or not.......and I’ll try to develop a thicker skin in the process. [emoji12]

You watch baseball, but you do not understand it. You call your lack of understandinh opinions. Fine, but Mark tried to help you. No surprise you did not learn anything.

See the bold.

Generating offense, not stay out of double plays. Double plays, AGAIN, aren't because the runners aren't moving. Double plays are happening because Astros hitters are swinging at pitches that lead to double plays  instead of jumping on pitches to drive. If you take two fastballs in the zone then swing at a junkball off the outside corner, there's a much better chance you're going to roll over on it and hit in to a double play than if you swing at a thigh high fastball down the middle.

If starting runners was a viable way to routinely prevent double plays, wouldn't managers be starting runners all the time? You are more than allowed to have an opinion. But if your opinion is nonsense, it shall be addressed as such.

This place has a long history of beating posters down for their opinions. You should really be grateful that you have been given as much rope as you have and that Jim is the only one cussing at you.
