Astros trade James Hoyt to the Indians
« on: July 06, 2018, 02:09:15 pm »
He’s headed to AAA with them and will be on their 40 man roster.

In return we get low A relief pitcher Tommy DeJuneas. In 2 seasons he has a 2-5 record and a 2.93 ERA in 37 games. He is 22 years old.

Here is a link to the newest Astros farmhand.

Good for Hoyt.  He deserves another shot and I didn't see him getting it with Houston.

Clears a 40 man spot.
Alvarez promoted to AAA.
Tucker not in the Futures Game.

Something’s brewing here.

Predictions? When the smoke clears, I hope Alvarez and Perez are still Astros.

I think MM is thinking Tucker will be added to the 40 man and promoted, hence not being in the futures game.

I hope it’s not a catcher because of McCann going down. I LOVE what he brings to this team but did not see him here next year and feel pretty confident with Stassi / Stubbs going forward.

Edited to add:  I’m happy for Hoyt. He’s good enough to be on the MLB roster for many teams but I did not see a path forward for him on the Astros. I am intrigued by Dejuneas only because the Astros gave up an MLB-ready player for him and I trust the Astros Way so much.

They alread had space on the 40 man without trading Hoyt, right?

Probably nothing but Fresno's starting OF tonight is Alvarez, Fisher, Straw  L-R.

Cleared a spot when they traded Kemmer, I do believe.

He's done this in the past prior to announcing major promotions (Bregman I know was one):  his twitter page is displaying the Death Star as of this afternoon.

So what is McHughs trade value right now?  I’m guessing nothing near what he is worth to the Astros currently.

They had one spot left, but if you have another catcher injury, you need it for Stubbs.

I thought Tucker got tossed from last nights game, which is why he is sitting out tonight???

Roster construction is such an interesting but tough issue because of how deep this organization is. Marisnick is a valuable player for this team, but a defensive specialist  is a luxury on the 25 man because of the need for more offense. White’s spot is for Correa. Can a pitcher go to clear the way for Tucker? If so, who? Are they shopping Giles because of Rondon’s success? Is McHugh too valuable to trade? Is either Perez or Guduan a better option in the pen than an injured Britton or the king’s ransom SD wants for Hand? Is Tucker a better option than a trade for a veteran hitter? If Hoyt gets only a low A pitcher in return, what trade value do White and Reed have? Do you sit Kemp after he has been the answer in the 9 hole? Do you shop Keuchel at the deadline? Will Hinch ever believe Harris is expendable? ARGH!

This would be a fun podcast or a great evening’s discussion at a bar with beer(s). Whatever happened to the podcast idea?

Great post Jim. Lots to discuss and digest. I hate this for Jake. Dude could be an all-star the way he plays defense if he could just hit about .285 to .290. He was the one however who has to go down if you are calling Tucker up. No way you can send down Kemp. I expect Tucker to play a lot between now and July 31st. Roster construction is what this is about. The brass wants to see if he can handle MLB pitching to determine if he should be on the playoff roster in my opinion. If he shows he can’t, then we could make a move for a bat before the deadline.

Regarding roster construction, I think we hold on to McHugh. I also think we don’t make a move for a bullpen arm. I think we learned something from our playoff run last year. Our relievers, especially Devo, will be much more rested come playoff time this year compared to last.

Roster construction is my favorite thing aside from watching games. Perhaps Tucker is the answer for more offense. I hope so, but how does he not take ABs away from Kemp? Marvin will return to super sub, which I like. I do not think this is a stand pat team. I still think we need another LHP in the pen and, of course, more offense. Maybe Tucker and Sipp are enough.

And he doesn't even need to hit at all-star levels.  A .250-.260 season average makes him an everyday player on easily half the teams in MLB.

Absolutely! I would be happy with him starting in the OF if he could just hit .250 and cut down on the K’s. I was just saying that his D is so good, he’s easily an all-star if he could hit .285.

In the AL with only 12 position players having your backups be infield/outfield versatile is a must.  8 positions + DH + backup catcher covers 10 spots.  You could have 1 infield only player and 1 outfield only player.  But that leaves you vulnerable to multiple in game injuries.  It also limits a managers ability to move players during the game.

From the article you can tell Kemp has a great attitude and knows he must be versatile to succeed at this level. Im sure he will be fine going forward.
