Leon Bridges' new album, Good Thing, is a really great thing.

I'll have to check that out.

I've flagged a lot of songs that I like this year, but looking back through my 2018 playlist I don't see many albums that I thought were great... plenty of "pretty good" for sure.

It's been a great year for music.

I love that Leon Bridges album and think it's his best yet.

Other favorites:

Hiss Golden Messenger
Nathaniel Rateliff
Wye Oak
Kacey Musgraves
Lord Huron
Jon Hopkins
Courtney Barnett
Neko Case
Snail Mail
Lucy Dacus
Don't think twice, it's alright.

This captures a lot of my favorites from this year as well, but I would also add John Prine’s release and the Middle Kids’ album.

I second Nathaniel Rateliff.  Saw him live for free at ACL and then got gifted the new CD.  Pre goo

Been listening to the debut album by Cut Worms -- Hollow Ground. Songwriter Max Clarke channels the Everly Brothers with his light acoustic pop and two part harmonies. It's pretty good, nice and mellow jangly music, not the kind of stuff I listen to if I need to get fired up. It has more of the need to calm down and lighten up feel. Don't Want to Say Goodbye

That sounds like something I would like... will check it out. Thanks, Sphinx!

I've spent some time with some of the suggestions on this thread and have been fond of both Parquet Courts and Snail Mail. I did *not* like Neko's new album, which was disappointing because I typically enjoy her stuff.

I've had a love-hate with Parquet Courts going back to about 2012. They have some great tracks on this new album, but I don;t know many other bands that can make a 2-3 minute song a labor to get through. They often fall into a formula that gets very repetitive very quickly.  Pronounced Bass line... light-to-moderate rhythm guitar... shout-speak-singing... lather-rinse-repeat. And it works a lot of the time (Before the Water Gets Too High) and sometimes it's awful (Violence). Then they come out with some more melodic fare like Mardi Gras Beads or Total Football (which keeps getting better every time I listen to it).

Anyhow...

I'd put both of those in Top 5 at the year's halfway point, along with Courtney Barnett and the odd-yet-delightful whimsy from Sydney Gish, some random northeastern singer-songwriter I read about in Pitchfork back in January. I'm inclined to give the last spot to Dr. Dog out of loyalty - they've been one of my favorite bands for 10+ years, and this newest release is the closest thing they've done in years to the record that made me a fan all those years ago.

The new Car Seat Headrest is solid. Will Toledo I think is his name—prolific to a fault probably but so young who cares.

The Parquet Courts new album Wide Awake is great. Danger Mouse produced, I think its my favorite of the year so far. With elements of funk, punk, power pop and new wave. My favorite song is Total Football, followed closely by Almost Had To Start a Fight/In And Out Of Patience. And fuck Tom Brady.

Shooter Jennings' new album is pretty damn sweet. 70s Outlaw Country styled. Favorite song so far is, "Living in a Minor Key."

I don't know if any of you got to see Dan Stuart in his brief run through Houston or during his week in Austin. Hell, I don't know if more than one or two of you even know who he is (or was). Those shows in Austin, promoting his most recent and final album and the novel of the same name, "The Unfortunate Demise of Marlowe Billings," were spectacular, each one better than the previous one. It ended in a paroxysm of magic and wonder at the Continental Club Gallery, trading songs and stories with Jon Dee Graham. Check out the record, if you're so inclined.

Coming up pretty soon will also be "Red Rescue," the stunning first release by Jaimee Harris, currently supporting Mary Gauthier throughout the US and Europe. I think she'll finally get a national release of this one, perhaps in October, and I predict a lot of success for her. The record is incredibly good and so is she.
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

If your a fan of the Mexican band Molotov, you're gonna want to listen to their new album, MTV Unplugged: El Desconecte. I guess MTV and unplugged is still a thing in Mexico.

Very fond of the Nude Party this year. What else? A coffeeshop employee of mine has introduced me to Ritt Momney, who has one or two awfully decent songs. I have mostly been waking up to jazz and classical this year. Rather a lot of Charles Mingus, Art Blakey, Bill Evans and Ludwig Van in the banedoodle residence, 2018. The new Nathaniel Rateliff was excellent and underappreciated, IMO. Molly Birch continued to impress.
