Well, after I-don't-know-how-many-years, hitters seem to be learning how to out-wait Keuchel.

B1:

Dozier slow roller to 3B... Bregman with a nice barehanded play, ruled out, but Twins challenging, and overturned.  Davis was in bad position at 1B and may have cost an out.
Mauer...full count...walks, Dozier to 2B
Sano...full count...chops one over the mound, only play is to 1B...4-3...Dozier to 3B, Mauer to 2B
Escobar...infield in...sac fly to RF...Dozier scores, Mauer to 3B
Grossman doubles to LCF, Mauer scores
Morrison...full count...grounds out 6-3

2-0 Twins

Giving up 2 in the first must seem like a mountain to climb for this offense right now.

Finally.

What happened on the Bregman play? Just beat the throw or was there another issue?

Combination of that and being just slightly off with control.  If he wants the low strike call, he’s got to hit that spot really consistently, he just doesn’t seem to be doing that.

Really close play.  Davis got his feet a little out of whack, was at the back of the bag, and didn't get a good stretch.  If he's one or two inches closer, it's an out and no runs score.

Yeah, George seems to be swinging harder and harder as things get worse and worse. Hopefully the light will go on soon.

Keuchel walks in a run...he's getting squeezed a bit, and he's hitting his spots, but just refuses to bring it up an inch...

Ump hasn't given that low, outside (to RH hitter) corner to either pitcher.

To be fair, a lot of those borderline pitches were just outside the zone.  Keuchel has to get more of the zone.

He's pretty much putting the ball where he wants.  But he's not getting the call, and continues to throw the same pitch over and over.

I think McHugh is showing that he is a bad ass and a man too.  Stuck out the fan.

You had been able to tune that out?  Blessed. I've heard it constantly.  I think even when it's not being done.

Last night may have been the tightest strike zone for Keuchel I have ever seen. I am amazed he did not explode and get tossed.

I know “it is early,” yada yada, but the strikeout graphic pointed out vividly what is wrong with the lineup in the early going.

*For the third time in five games the Astros were held without an extra-base hit and went 1x6 w/RISP. Carlos Correa was 0x4 with 2 GIDPs.

Agree Jim. In the first inning Dallas’ first pitch to Mauer was PERFECT! It was a pitch that as a hitter I would want thrown to me, and the HPU called it a ball. Dallas did ask where it was and I can’t believe after the way things went that he held his cool.

The strikeout graphic you mentioned was enlightening to say the least. What troubles me so much is that the issues are pretty much team wide. Too many fastballs are being taken early in the count to fall behind and then they chase spin. It’s almost like there has been a philosophical change the team has made towards hitting, but I’m sure that isn’t the case. Opposing teams are attacking us differently and that is probably the root of all of this. I just know that with the possible exception of Reddick, no one looks comfortable at the plate. Our batters are ducking out of the way from breaking balls and letting fastballs go by and immediately turn and look at the ump like a little leaguer in hopes he doesn’t call it a strike. Not time to panic yet but it is damn frustrating to watch.

Part of me is not displeased with Keuchel’s early struggles. Maybe now he will STFU and pitch.

I thought Keuchel showed remarkable restraint last night and was surprised the ump didn't have a wider zone due to the weather. A hurry-up and get the hell outta here approach.
